In a New York Times profile to promote his film “Daddio,” actor and activist Sean Penn griped about how things in Hollywood have changed since he starred in “Milk” in 2008. He said the industry has become “timid and artless,” and he’s been “miserable” on sets for the past 15 years.
In the interview, Penn told writer Maureen Dowd that he focused more on journalism and political activism after “Milk,” because he was having a bad time in the film industry.
“I went 15 years miserable on sets,” he said. “‘Milk’ was the last time I had a good time.”
Penn won his second Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance as Harvey Milk, who as a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors was the first openly gay elected official in California and was assassinated by a disgruntled political opponent in 1978.

Tim Roth is in talks to play political operative Henry Kissinger in Cannes package Kissinger Takes Paris.
Jeff Stanzler is set to direct from his own screenplay, billed as a satire with the announcement drawing comparisons to Wag the Dog. Robin Wright, Mary-Louise Parker, Lucy Hale, David Cross, Jimmy O. Yang, Rob Corddry and Dylan Penn are also in talks to star in the ensemble.
As for the plot, it’s perhaps best to quote the official synopsis verbatim: “The film tells the (mostly) true story of Henry Kissinger – a middle-aged, politically washed-up Harvard professor who, in 1968, travels to Paris at the height of its student protests and the dawn of the sexual revolution. Feeling energized, he crashes the Paris Peace Talks and changes the course of modern history. A few weeks later, Henry returns to America as the second most powerful man in the world – and even more astonishingly…...

Henry Kissinger may have only died in November, but the controversial politician is already set to get the satirical comedy treatment.
Tim Roth, Robin Wright, Mary-Louise Parker, Lucy Hale, David Cross, Jimmy O. Yang, Rob Corddry and Dylan Penn are in talks to star in the feature film “Kissinger Takes Paris,” set during Kissinger’s younger, pre-Vietnam War years.
Roth (“The Hateful Eight,” “Sundown”) will star as Kissinger, while Jeff Stanzler will direct from his screenplay, and Claude Dal Farra and Brian Keady of Bcdf Pictures (“To Leslie”) are producing along with Stanzler. CAA Media Finance and Concourse Media are co-representing domestic rights, and Concourse is handling international rights, with sales launching at Cannes.

Exclusive: Matthew Wilder has been set to write and direct an untitled film that chronicles the life and work of author Joan Didion.
The plan is to paint a dreamlike day in the life of Didion and California in the late 1960s, when the brilliant young journalist is hurtled from encounters with jailed Manson girls to protesting Black Panthers, and from Nancy Reagan pausing in a photo op to Vietnam War POWs — climaxing with an epilogue in a near-future California where an AI Joan encounters a dystopia beyond her wildest anxiety dreams.
The film, produced under David Michaels’ Enfant Terrible Cinema, will shoot in Los Angeles in the first or second quarter of 2024. Financing is being discussed with potential partners this week at AFM.

Sean Penn’s ‘Black Flies’ Jolts Cannes With Splattered Brains, Mike Tyson and Raves for Tye Sheridan
“Black Flies,” the Sean Penn and Tye Sheridan film about emergency medical first responders, smacked the Cannes Film Festival in the face with a brutal world premiere on Thursday.
Splattered brains, dead dogs, an addict giving birth with a needle dangling from her arm — these and a litany of other horrors confronted Penn and Sheridan, who play veteran and rookie paramedics, respectively, at the New York Fire Department. Interestingly enough, the black-tie screening at the Grand Palais enjoyed the dose of reality, giving the film a five-minute standing ovation.
“We carry the misery,” a weary Penn tells Sheridan in the film of their chosen profession. That’s an understatement, as chaos unfolds neighborhood by neighborhood in a portrait of an unforgiving city.
“Black Flies” stars Sheridan as Ollie Cross, a young paramedic in New York City who is mentored by Penn’s more-experienced Emt. The two are forced to face extreme violence during their shifts,...

At the Ralph Lauren Fashion event in California, Robin Wright posed with her 31-year-old daughter.
Though the two are twenty years apart in age, it has been said that the two could be sisters. Dylan Penn is the child of Wright and award-winning actor Sean Penn.
Penn and Wright got together shortly after Penn and Madonna stopped dating.
The marriage was a difficult one, though they had Dylan and son Hopper together.
In the early years of the marriage, Wright stayed home with the kids while Penn pursued larger roles, possibly at the expanse of family time.
“We agreed as parents that we’d not work at the same time so that one of us was always with the kids. He was making more money than I was at the time, so it was a simple decision: ‘You go work—I’ll stay with the kids,'” she said.

Thandiwe Newton would like to have a word with Sean Penn. After he recently declared men in American culture have "become wildly feminized," the actress took to Twitter to slam the 61-year-old. "@SeanPenn Dude what are you Say-ing??" she wrote on Jan. 30. "Like for Real? You're a jibbering Fool. Mf you used to be sexy but now you're just tragic." And, when she learned he had doubled down on his remarks in a follow-up interview alongside daughter Dylan Penn, well, she had a bit more to get off her chest. "In front of your Daughter!?" Thandiwe tweeted of the 30-year-old, whose mom is Robin Wright. "That poor little mite. Thank God her...

Thandiwe Newton Slams Sean Penn’s Comment About Men Being Too ‘Feminized’: ‘You’re a Jibbering Fool’
Thandiwe Newton has officially weighed in.
The “Westworld” star slammed Sean Penn via Twitter after Penn voiced his criticisms on modern gender roles.
Penn previously said in an interview with The Independent that he is “in the club that believes that men in American culture have become wildly feminized.”
Penn continued, “I don’t think that being a brute or having insensitivity or disrespect for women is anything to do with masculinity, or ever did. But I don’t think that [in order] to be fair to women, we should become them…I have these very strong women in my life who do not take masculinity as a sign of oppression toward them. There are a lot of, I think, cowardly genes that lead to people surrendering their jeans and putting on a skirt.”
Newton retweeted Variety’s coverage of the interview, commenting, “Dude what are you saying? Like for real? You’re a jibbering fool…...

Thandiwe Newton took a stand against Sean Penn after the actor and filmmaker made headlines for comments about men becoming too feminized in American culture. The “Milk” and “Mystic River” Oscar winner said in an interview with The Independent last week that it’s a “cowardly gene” that leads men to wear skirts.
“Dude what are you saying?” Newton wrote on Twitter in reaction to Penn’s comments. “Like for real? You’re a jibbering fool…you used to be sexy but now you’re just tragic.”
The “Crash” and “Westworld” star added, “In front of your daughter!? That poor little mite. Thank God her Mum’s so dope. Please stop ruining the brilliance of ‘Licorice Pizza’ with this nonsense.”

Sean Penn is getting a lot of attention for comments he made yesterday in the Independent while promoting his latest film, Flag Day.
The project is Penn’s latest directorial effort, one in which he also stars with real-life daughter Dylan Penn. Based on the autobiographical Flim-Flam Man: The True Story of My Father’s Counterfeit Life written by Jennifer Vogel, Flag Day is about the unique bond between a daughter and a messed-up but charismatic father, John Vogel, who spent years in prison for a bank robbery, was a grand schemer and dreamer, and who became the most notorious counterfeiter in U.S. history, single-handedly faking over $20 million.
Deadline’s reviewer, Pete Hammond called Penn’s character “an underworld guy who feels he is always just one step away from the American Dream.”

Sean Penn doubled down in an interview with The Independent on his belief that “men have become quite feminized.” The two-time Oscar winner generated headlines earlier this month after telling one newspaper, “I am in the club that believes that men in American culture have become wildly feminized. I don’t think that being a brute or having insensitivity or disrespect for women is anything to do with masculinity, or ever did. But I don’t think that [in order] to be fair to women, we should become them.”
When asked by The Independent to clarify these comments, Penn said, “I think that men have, in my view, become quite feminized. I have these very strong women in my life who do not take masculinity as a sign of oppression toward them. There are a lot of, I think, cowardly genes that lead to people surrendering their jeans and putting on a skirt.

Americana Trauma: Penn Returns with Hysterical Melodrama
After the formidable misfire of his last directorial effort The Last Face (2016), Sean Penn unfortunately doesn’t fare much better with his labor-of-love follow-up Flag Day, ‘based on a true story’ from the memoir Film Flam Man by Jennifer Vogel. A film about an ‘unique’ familial dysfunction in America’s heartland, Vogel’s woe is horribly maligned in a script from Brit scribe Jez Butterworth and the clearly out of touch Penn, who casts daughter Dylan Penn in curiously underwhelming lead role, which he usurps most suspiciously whenever he’s also on screen.
Like an overworked Sam Shepard melodrama beneath the hubris of a John Huston lens, Penn apes all his favored darlings for this seedy beat caricature which can’t quite hit the high notes of the trauma porn it aims to be.…...

Sean Penn is thrilled his new movie, “Flag Day,” is exclusively releasing in theaters, but only wants vaccinated people to go see it.
“I do always feel, at this point in time, that I have to say that I hope — I’d ask — that as much as I want people all to go to the theater, I really only want people who are vaccinated and safe to themselves and each other to go,” he told NBC’s Seth Meyers Monday night. “It will stream.”
He added, “Most of the people who aren’t vaccinated probably aren’t interested in my movies, anyway.”
Penn is directing and starring in “Flag Day,” out last Friday, with his daughter, Dylan Penn.
“If I’m interested in seeing a film, I don’t want the convenience of the small box when something was — like ‘Flag Day’ was — made for the big screen,” he told Meyers.

Dylan Penn, the young actor of Sean Penn’s “Flag Day” which competed at Cannes, will be receiving the Hollywood Rising-Star Award at the upcoming Deauville American Film Festival.
The Hollywood Rising-Star Award launched in 2011 and handed out its inaugural nod to Ryan Gosling and Jessica Chastain, and went on to pay tribute to Paul Dano, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Olsen, Chloé Grace Moretz, Daniel Radcliffe, Shailene Woodley, Elle Fanning and Sophie Turner.
Penn, who is the daughter of Sean Penn and Robin Wright, received critical acclaim for her performance in “Flag Day,” in which she held her first major role as Jennifer Vogel. Described as an intimate family portrait, the film is inspired by the real-life story of Vogel and the dysfunctional relationship she had with her fascinating father, who happened to be a flamboyant conman and bank robber.

Sean Penn’s Flag Day raised a $1,656 per screen average from 24 runs this weekend, a glum opening for the father-daughter family drama from United Artists Releasing.
The film, directed and starring Penn as the most notorious counterfeiter in U.S. history, along with daughter Dylan Penn, targeted an older, sophisticated demo that’s proving hard to get back. Deadline’s heard that 56% of the audience that did show up was over age 55 – a hefty percentage.
Uar’s president, distribution, Erik Lomis told Deadline on Friday the industry is struggling to crack that code, a proposition not made any easier by the Delta variant. The struggle is clearly ongoing.
The film grossed $10,853 on Friday, $18,002 Saturday and an estimated $11,895 on Sunday in ten markets. It has a 88% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, but with only 50 ratings.

Flag Day is a significant film for Sean Penn in two different ways. First of all, it’s the first film he’s both directed and starred in. Also, it’s the first film he’s made with his daughter, Dylan Penn. While she was literally born to play the character — she plays the daughter of Penn’s character […]

United Artists Releasing opens Flag Day, directed and starring Sean Penn, in a uneven specialty market where the Delta Variant spike has theaters in key cities requiring proof of vaccination, theaters are hard to book, and hits have been rare since the industry reopened.
Eventually “We’ll crack the code, because good movie and good stories win out.” said Erik Lomis, President, Distribution at Uar. Older demos — the meat-and-potatoes of arthouse — “are less comfortable coming back than we all hoped. It’s a tough, tough market to crack… but there’s nothing like seeing it in a movie theater.”
The film from MGM Studios premiered at Cannes and debuts in 24 theaters in 10 markets. It expands next weekend to 24 markets and 50 theaters. “We’ll continue to roll out like that until we really step on the gas depending upon market conditions,...

There was nothing fast about the debate between Dylan Penn and father Sean Penn on the set of their latest film. The father-daughter duo appeared together on The Late Show on Thursday, Aug. 19, where host Stephen Colbert asked if they had any disagreements while Sean directed his daughter as the star of the film Flag Day, which debuts on Friday, Aug. 20. "We had one major... I think it was a two-hour standoff about a note that he had," Dylan, 30, candidly replied. She went on to explain that it was "about whether I could wear mascara or not wear mascara." After Dylan shared, "He won," the host quipped, "That is a fight a father usually has with a daughter when...
