“West Side Story” actor Ansel Elgort is set to star in “Faster Than Horses,” a survival thriller directed by Emmy nominee James Erskine (“Shooting for Socrates “) and produced by survival expert Bear Grylls.

Inspired by a true story and based on an article by Hampton Sides, “Faster Than Horses” follows a former Olympic runner who attempts a return to glory in the world’s toughest footrace, the Marathon des Sables, a series of back-to-back marathons across the Sahara Desert. But when a devastating sandstorm engulfs the race, he finds himself lost in the Sahara Desert, locked in a 10-day battle not for victory, but for survival.

The film is currently in pre-production and will be unveiled to international distributors at the AFM which kicks on Nov. 5 in Las Vegas. Upgrade will handle international sales, with CAA Media Finance repping North American rights.

Baby Driver and Tokyo Vice star Ansel Elgort will be starring in an upcoming survival thriller from reality show survival host Bear Grylls. The Hollywood Reporter says that Elgort has signed on for Faster Than Horses, which features him as a marathon runner who has been suddenly thrust into the fight of his life. The film comes from documentary filmmaker James Erskine, known for projects like Billie and The End of the Storm. Grylls is on board as a producer of the film. The movie is currently in pre-production and Upgrade Productions, the studio handling international sales, is set to pitch the project to international buyers at the American Film Market in Las Vegas next week.

Based on a true story, the Baby Driver star will play a former Olympian who attempts a series of marathons across the Sahara Desert. After a sandstorm engulfs the race, Elgort’s character finds himself lost and alone in the desert as he battles for survival.

Tiger is inspired by the true story of Pardeep Singh Nagra, a practicing Sikh man who was banned from the sport of boxing due to his religious beliefs. The ban and the backlash he received is a result of racial profiling, stereotypical threats, and the daily pressure to change to fit a regulation and to conform. It is within the course of these challenges, and at his weakest moment, that he discovers love, who he is and to love himself and find his purpose. R3M Productions has set a Nov. 2 release date for the Mickey Rourke boxing drama “Tiger,” based on the story of Sikh boxer Pardeep Nagra, who refused to shave off his beard.

Nagra was barred from competing in a Canadian boxing championship because of his beard, which is a mandatory article of his Sikh faith. He challenged the beard ban and in 2000, the Canadian courts ruled in his favor.

Production companies are R3M Productions, Running Tiger Films and Gold Pictures. Alister Grierson directed from a script by Prem Singh and Michael Pugliese. Producers are Rocco Pugliese, Jeff Maynard, Robert Kwartler and Howard Nash.

Prem Singh and Michael Pugliese both star in the film as Nagra and his adversary, respectively. They co-wrote the screenplay as a means of producing work they were passionate about after enduring frustration with the roles available to them. The duo raised $4 million to make the film...

Janel Parrish also stars in the story of Pardeep Singh Nagra, an aspiring Sikh boxer who fights back after he is banned from the sport for refusing to shave his beard.

However things are not that clear-cut. While he has the support of his head coach and mentor, the man receives a barrage of threats.

R3M Productions presents Tiger, which is produced by Mary Aloe of Aloe Entertainment, Daniel Grodnik of Mass Hysteria Entertainment, and Rocco Pugliese of R3M Productions.

Principal photography has begun in Cincinnati on the drama from R3M Productions in association with Grodnik / Aloe Productions.

Rourke has joined the cast alongside Janel Parrish from Pretty Little Liars and newcomer Prem Singh in the title role.

Tiger is inspired by the true story of Pardeep Nagra, a Sikh who was barred from the sport of boxing because he refused to shave his beard and fought back in pursuit of his dream.

Beards are not allowed in boxing for fear they may scratch the eye of an opponent.
