Under the working title "Big Daddy", this film was originally planned as a vehicle for Gary Cooper. When Cooper's terminal illness prevented his appearing, Bing Crosby was brought in and the script revised to suit his talents.

The film was to star Carol Lynley and Fabian (previously paired in "Hound Dig" but Lynley refused to do the movie saying it was time that she started doing grown-up roles. She had no problem with Fabian, as they were friends, and role went to Tuesday Weld.
