Gilles Grangier's next to last movie,"Un cave " recalls some of his little Films Noirs of the fifties which were sometimes exciting ("Reproduction Interdite" "Trois Jours A Vivre " "Echec Au Porteur" "Le Desordre Et La Nuit")The director does not claim to be able to do something "deep " or "meaningful" but his film is good entertainment you can save it for a rainy day.
A "cave" (slang for someone who does not belong to the underworld) is released from jail where he spent two years and where he met a dangerous gangster .This sinister man, feared by the underworld and by the police escapes but he is mortally wounded ,in spite of his young "friend"'s help. Here lies the originality of the screenplay: the hero uses the dead criminal as an ogre ,as a threat. The Police (with one exception) do not care about him ,eager to throw the escapee in.And of course there's a lot of dough in stake .
Claude Brasseur is perfect as the young naive (only on the surface)novice.Marthe Keller is gorgeous .
