'Officially,' the match ended in a 4-4 tie. However it was made clear that the referee was hand-picked to call the action in favor of the German team. The referee disallowing the first tying goal was one such call, a last-ditch attempt to keep the Allied team trailing. So the Allied players, the various Allied POW officers from various countries, and the French crowd watching the match, all considered it a 5-4 Allied victory.
