Classic action movies, fantasy, drama, crime — you name it — the entertainment industry is all about remakes and reboots these days.
Yeah, they’re not exactly the best at it, but there are a few gemstones among the copious oodles of mediocrity. Even a blind squirrel will find an acorn occasionally, and it’s always nice to dream.
Speaking of dreaming, there are some fantastic action movies (mostly from the 1980s) that would be sublime candidates for a TV series, if well executed, of course.
(Paramount Pictures/Screenshot)
Many fans cry ‘sacrilege!’ whenever someone chooses a classic for a remake, but that’s just the way the cookie crumbles in contemporary entertainment circles.
So, if it must be done, why not go all out and try for some first-rate action flicks? While some classic action movies belong to the hallowed halls of remembrance, a few pass the litmus test for the next great TV series.

Ridley Scott hasn’t read reviews of his films in more than 40 years, all thanks to the iconic late critic Pauline Kael.
Auteur Scott told The Hollywood Reporter that after Kael eviscerated his now-classic 1982 feature “Blade Runner,” he hasn’t looked at critics’ takes again.
“Pauline Kael in The New Yorker killed me stone dead with her ‘Blade Runner’ review. It was four pages of destruction,” Scott said. “I never met her. I was so offended.”
At the time, Kael wrote that Scott had a “creepy, oppressive vision” in “Blade Runner,” deeming the film a “suspense-less thriller” that was “unpleasant [and] ugly.”
While Scott hasn’t looked at reviews for his films since then, he does re-read Kael’s takedown quite often.
“I framed those pages and they’ve been in my office for 30 years to remind me there’s only one critic that counts and that’s you,” Scott said.

Ridley Scott gives a tight smile when he’s told he “crushed it” making his long-awaited sandal-and-toga sequel Gladiator II.
“I know,” Scott replies. “You never count your chickens … but sometimes, you know.”
The director’s commercial instincts are honed by 47 years of ups and downs in Hollywood. The British filmmaker got his start as feature film director with 1977’s The Duelists and has been working ever since. This month, Scott turns 87 and has never been more productive, having ground out three historical action epics over the last few years — 2021’s The Last Duel, 2023’s Napoleon, and now Gladiator II, which is generating early buzz as a likely hit that might score Scott his first Oscar. He’s also become more prolific as a producer via his company Scott Free, generating a storm of projects which include this summer’s surprise hit Alien: Romulus and Amazon’s upcoming series Blade Runner 2099.

Few of today's modern genre filmmakers have had as great a run as Ridley Scott, the visionary director behind such films as Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator, and many more. Later this month, we'll feast our eyes on the 86-year-old director's latest masterpiece, Gladiator II, the sequel to his Oscar-winning 2000 film starring Russell Crowe. For the past several decades, Scott has been running his own production company called Scott Free, which works in tandem with 20th Century Studios and other studios to bring projects to the screen. To mark the upcoming release of Gladiator II, Scott and his team at Scott Free spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about his long career, including the anticipated Gladiator sequel, which he calls “the best thing I’ve ever made.”

Ridley Scott has created multiple franchises over the years. Unfortunately for him, he didn’t secure ownership of them. That means, ultimately, he has very little say about what goes on in the “Alien” and “Blade Runner” universes. And that’s something he regrets to this day.
Speaking to THR, Ridley Scott talked about his new film in the “Gladiator” franchise, but he also talked about how he lost the rights to both “Alien” and “Blade Runner.” And he’s pretty bitter over the situation.

Sir Ridley Scott has insisted 'Gladiator II' won't receive a separate director's cut.The 86-year-old filmmaker has frequently released his own version of his movies after they have left theatres - such as 'Napoleon' and 'Blade Runner' - but Scott has now revealed he won't be bringing out an extended version of his upcoming historical epic sequel because he feels he has "earned the right to have the final cut".He explained to Collider: "I have the final cut anyway, so my cut that goes out usually is my fault. It is my cut. I’ll go around in circles. I won’t agonize because I cut during the film."I don’t get to the end and then start the cut — God knows that would take too long. I cut as I’m going, and I think it’s valid to cut...

One thing you can count on Ridley Scott for is an honest opinion. The director is famously candid in his interviews, previously blaming the box office for his film "The Last Duel" on the entire millennial generation and talking openly about how he thinks the long-gestating "Alien" TV series won't be as good as his movies.
On that last point, the director might well be onto something, especially if we're talking about his original 1979 masterpiece "Alien." The film that kick-started the franchise really stands on its own as a seminal slow burn space horror, showcasing a mastery of mood and atmosphere that, regardless of Scott's other work, will always serve as a testament to the man's greatness. No matter how good the TV show is, it will indeed never be able to supersede something so monumental.
Surprisingly, Scott is actually attached to that TV project as an executive producer, proving...

When Ridley Scott shot “Alien” in 1978, he didn’t know it was going to be the hit it became upon release in 1979, nor fully understood the legacy it would have in the decades that followed and continues to this day. Moreover, he was only making his second feature, so when 20th Century Fox contracted him to make the film, it was unlikely he would have been given any rights over any future sequels. However, when Scott revived the franchise in 2012 with “Prometheus,” he wishes his production company Scott Free had fought for a financial stake in the series.
“I should have locked them up, as [Steven] Spielberg did with ‘Jurassic,’ and everything he does, and James Cameron has done with what he has,” Scott said in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “I resurrected a dead ‘Alien’ [franchise] with ‘Prometheus’ and ‘Alien: Covenant,’ and we should have rejoined the ownership right then,...

Connie Nielsen says working with Sir Ridley Scott was "super important" for her return in 'Gladiator II''.The 59-year-old actress reprises her role as Lucilla in the long-awaited sequel to the historical epic and explained that the opportunity to work closely with the 'Blade Runner' filmmaker was a key factor in her decision to sign up for the picture.Connie told Screen Rant: "Well, first of all, obviously the opportunity to work with Ridley again was super important. "And then there was this option of, oh my God, continuing telling the story of Lucilla, especially because they told me nothing about what would happen to her in the beginning."They just said, you will be happy, Connie, and they know me. So when I then finally did read the script, I was sort of like, yeah, yeah, I will be happy."And then we then started that...

An exclusive from director Ridley Scott: among his planned upcoming films, including his Bee Gees biopic and Gladiator III, there’s a mystery sci-fi movie.
The perpetually busy Ridley Scott has recently said that he has the next three years planned out in terms of his filmmaking. First up, there’s You Should Be Dancing, his Bee Gees music biopic which should begin production in early 2025 – he previously talked to us about his plans to make a movie that captures the wider music scene of the 1960s and 70s.
Then there’s Gladiator III, which he says has already been storyboarded and at least partially written (though whether or not it’ll be partly set in a gladiatorial arena seems to be somewhat up in the air).
In our conversation with Mr Scott in September, however, another project came up which he hadn’t, at least to our knowledge,...

Ridley Scott, the acclaimed director behind classics such as ‘Blade Runner’ and ‘Gladiator,’ has revealed he’s developing a new film for the ‘Alien‘ franchise.
At 86, Scott continues to influence the cinematic landscape with his sharp, succinct approach to selecting projects.
He advises filmmakers to pitch their ideas concisely: ‘Narrow it down to something very simple and brief — tell me the film in two sentences,’ he insists, emphasizing that the core of a movie pitch should ignite an immediate spark.
This summer, Scott’s production company, Scott Free, saw significant success with ‘Alien: Romulus,’ a surprise hit that grossed $350 million worldwide.
This success has reignited interest in legacy titles under Scott’s banner, leading to new projects like FX’s ‘Alien: Earth’ and Amazon’s ‘Blade Runner: 2099’ series.
Despite his busy schedule, Scott maintains a laid-back attitude about the evolving platforms for storytelling.

When pitching a movie to Ridley Scott, you had better be quick about it. The 86-year-old has a lot on his plate, after all.
“I say, ‘Narrow it down to something very simple and brief — tell me the film in two sentences,’ ” says the renowned and prolific British director of such films as Blade Runner, Alien and Napoleon. “You should light the idea up, and within that you’ve got to have a fuse — a time bomb. When you just have [characters] doing something for something’s sake, that’s dangerous.”
A lit fuse could be, for instance, a group of young scavengers trapped on a derelict space station that’s going to crash into a planet’s rings in 36 hours — the plot of the summer hit Alien: Romulus, which was produced by Scott and his Scott Free production company and surprised the industry by earning $350 million globally.

Asif Kapadia is known for his critically acclaimed documentary films profiling famous figures like athletes Ayrton Senna and Diego Maradona. In 2073, Kapadia takes a bold step into speculative fiction with his vision of what might lie in store for our warming planet if current crises continue unabated.
The film flits between a gloomy portrayal of life on Earth in the year 2073 and sobering glimpses at our present-day world, linking real-life challenges to the director’s imagined societal collapse.
In the future sequences, we find Samantha Morton’s character eking out an uneasy existence in the ruins of San Francisco. Now known as New San Francisco, the city is an arid, heavily-policed wasteland where the privileged elite float above it all in sky-high towers.
Morton’s Ghost is haunted by past trauma and the deteriorating state of a world battered by climate change, shrinking freedoms, and unbridled corporate control. Through her eyes and voiceovers,...

The 1984 sci-fi thriller offers a grim view of the dangers that ‘the machines’ might pose for humanity as well as one of the most thrilling experiences of the decade
For many of the great speculative science fiction classics, the future has not come to pass. The island of Manhattan was not converted into a maximum security prison by 1997. No manned space odysseys before or after 2001 have reached Jupiter. 2010 was not the year we made contact. The flying cars and bioengineered replicants of the dystopian Los Angeles of Blade Runner were not in place by 2019, and the hoverboards of 2024 do not actually hover, unlike the wheel-free skateboards of 2015 in Back to the Future Part II.

Alcon Entertainment, producers of “Blade Runner 2049,” have accused Elon Musk and Tesla of infringing its copyrights — alleging the tech mogul blatantly copied an iconic scene from the movie with an AI-generated image intended to promote Tesla’s new self-driving taxi, after Alcon refused to grant any rights related to the 2017 sci-fi pic.
Musk opted for troll mode in responding to news of the lawsuit — saying “That movie sucked” — rather than addressing specifics of the complaint. Tesla and Warner Bros. Discovery, which also is named in the suit, have not commented on the litigation.
How strong are Alcon’s arguments from a legal perspective? Intellectual-property lawyers said the company probably will have a tough time proving that Musk and Tesla directly infringed Alcon’s “Blade Runner 2049” copyrights. But they also said Alcon could be able to make a case that Musk and Tesla’s alleged misappropriation of the movie represented “false endorsement.

A Tribute to Harrison Ford: One of America’s Most Beloved Actors Leading Star Wars and Indiana Jones
Harrison Ford has been well-known for his performances in his action-driven films such as playing Indiana Jones in the ‘Indiana Jones saga’ and Han Solo in the ‘Star Wars’ films. They have been two successful franchises that had given Harrison some other opportunities for other action roles. However, he also proved to be a wonderful actor by even starring in experimental sci-fi movies such as Ridley Scott’s 1982 sci-fi cult favorite ‘Blade Runner’ (1982). 1970s Harrison Ford was born on July 13th, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois. He attended Ripon College in the state of Wisconsin. He also took some minor acting roles in film and TV. Despite the fact that he was trying to break into the entertainment industry, he was also a carpenter. Around the early 1970s, he landed a small part in George Lucas’ film ‘American Graffiti’ (1973). This was after the famous sci-fi director made his powerful debut film ‘Thx-1138,...

When Ryan Gosling swam into view in Denis Villeneuve’s muted blue-and-grey-hued frames of Blade Runner 2049, fans of the sci-fi genre already discerned a classic in the making. Not only did Villeneuve respect Ridley Scott’s original vision but he committed it to a higher standard, elevating the story to a refined and finely-tuned cinematic tale that directly followed in the footsteps of the first story.
Analyzing Phillip Dick’s dystopian world and the repercussions of one man and his actions in light of the first movie’s events, Gosling presented a narrative that was driven by a greater emotional complexity on top of the moral dilemma that already dictated Harrison Ford’s 1982 film. Analyzing Phillip Dick’s dystopian world and the repercussions of one man and his actions in light of the first movie’s events, Gosling presented a narrative that was driven by a greater emotional complexity on top of the moral dilemma that already dictated Harrison Ford’s 1982 film. Now, Blade Runner 2049 takes its story one step further, cracking open a meta-narrative with the real world and into Elon Musk’s technological machinations.

Elon Musk, named as a defendant in a copyright-infringement lawsuit filed by the production company behind sci-fi movie “Blade Runner 2049,” had a three-word response to the litigation.
“That movie sucked,” Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, posted on the X social-media platform Tuesday, responding to news of the lawsuit.
Musk, Tesla and Warner Bros. Discovery are accused of misappropriating the intellectual property of Alcon Entertainment‘s “Blade Runner 2049” for last month’s launch of Tesla’s Robotaxi self-driving “cybercab.”
Released in 2017, “Blade Runner 2049” stars Ryan Gosling as K, a new blade runner for the LAPD, who “unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos,” leading him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former blade runner who’s been missing for 30 years. “Blade Runner 2049” has an 88% “certified fresh” critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and an 89% audience score.

Elon Musk and Warner Bros are being sued by the producer of Blade Runner 2049 for allegedly using AI to steal images from the film.
On the 10th October, Elon Musk’s electric car firm Tesla unveiled its latest venture, Cybercab, in a livestream which took place on Warner Bros’ backlot. Beforehand, the event’s organisers had asked Alcon Entertainment for permission to use images from director Denis Villeneuve’s 2017 dystopian sequel Blade Runner 2049; Alcon refused.
Alcon is now suing Tesla, claiming it used generative AI to create images using Blade Runner 2049 as a basis. What’s more, Warner Bros, the distributor of Blade Runner 2049, is also part of the lawsuit as the presentation took place on its studio lot.

Alcon Entertainment, the production company behind the dystopian sci-fi opus Blade Runner 2049, is suing Elon Musk, Warner Bros. Discovery and Tesla over part of an Oct. 10 presentation to unveil the car maker’s designs for hypothetical future products, including an self-driving “cybercab.”
The much-hyped event, which also included plans for a larger autonomous “robovan” and remotely operated Optimus robots serving drinks, contained few specifics about when any of these products would become a reality. The other week, electric car company Tesla debuted its fully autonomous robotaxi in Burbank, California, on the backlot for Warner Bros. Discovery studios. Autonomous taxis feature in movies like Blade Runner 2049, which was distributed by Warner Bros. Discovery, so maybe Tesla CEO Elon Musk felt it was appropriate.
But the people who made Blade Runner 2049 didn't. During the presentation, the audience watched a video about Tesla's new robotaxis that featured an image which recalled Blade Runner 2049 a little too much for the likes of Alcon Entertainment, which produced the movie. Per Variety, Alcon has now sued Musk, Tesla and Warner Bros. Discovery for copyright infringement and false endorsement.
You can see the image in question from Blade Runner 2049 above; it was featured as the header image for the trailer, so it's not obscure. Below, check out that image next to the one Alcon claims is infringing:...

With every new Ridley Scott film we're treated to a new Ridley Scott press run, which essentially means a ton of delightfully grumpy quotables are headed our way. "Gladiator 2," set to debut on November 22, 2024, has been no different. The British filmmaking legend told Empire magazine (via Deadline) that he has a "good relationship" with Russell Crowe, star of the original "Gladiator," before adding that Crowe shouldn't "start b***hing about how he wasn't consulted" for the sequel because "He's dead!". Scott also gave "Gladiator 2" star Paul Mescal some brutally terse advice for the highly-anticipated sequel, essentially telling him to immediately stop being nervous about fronting such a gargantuan production.
All of this is par for the course with Scott, who despite his own crotchetiness has been a Hollywood mainstay for decades now. That doesn't mean he hasn't endured some rocky moments in his impressively prolific career, however. Still...

A production company for Blade Runner 2049 has sued Tesla, which allegedly fed images from the movie into an artificial intelligence image generator to create unlicensed promotional materials.
Alcon Entertainment, in a lawsuit filed Monday in California federal court, accuses Elon Musk and his autonomous vehicle company of misappropriating the movie’s brand to promote its robotaxi at a glitzy unveiling earlier this month. The producer says it doesn’t want Blade Runner 2049 to be affiliated with Musk because of his “extreme political and social views,” pointing to ongoing efforts with potential partners for an upcoming TV series.
The complaint, which brings claims for copyright infringement and false endorsement, also names Warner Bros. Discovery for allegedly facilitating the partnership.
“Any prudent brand considering any Tesla partnership has to take Musk’s massively amplified, highly politicized, capricious and arbitrary behavior, which sometimes veers into hate speech, into account,” states the complaint.

No TV series has ever started off quite as hot as Futurama — just ask I.C. Wiener.
On March 28, 1999, Fox premiered the pilot episode of a series that they would kick around for a few seasons before dumping from the network, forcing the show to go on a quarter-century, multi-platform search for a permanent home that seems to have finally ended at Hulu. In “Space Pilot 3000,” Simpsons creator Matt Groening debuted an even more outlandish satirical universe than Springfield as Futurama perfectly introduced its inaugural fans to the world of the 31st century and the colorful cast of characters who called it home. When pizza delivery boy and chair-leaner Philip J. Fry fell (or was pushed) into a cryogenic freezing chamber set to preserve him for a thousand years, he took the audience with him into one of the most fantastical and fully realized worlds ever unveiled in a show’s first episode.

No one has ever accused Sir Ridley Scott of being shy with his feelings, but when Letterboxd asked the director for his four favorite films at the premiere of "Alien: Romulus," he still managed to be a bit surprising by naming one of his own. To be fair, he also named Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey," George Lucas' "Star Wars: A New Hope," and Jean-Jacques Annaud's "Quest for Fire" alongside his own "Blade Runner," so he had some pretty fantastic picks to offer in addition to showing his 1982 cyberpunk opus a little love. There's definitely a bit of a science fiction thread through his four favorites, and each one is a look at humanity through a slightly tilted lens, but let's talk a bit more about "Blade Runner" and why it deserves just as much if not more love than Scott's more popular sci-fi film, "Alien."

Affleck starred in the Hulu feature Deep Water in 2022. The movie was a thriller about a husband who’d get caught up in a mysterious crime after his wife’s affairs. One of the actors who Affleck worked with for the first time was Ana de Armas, who played his wife in the picture. De Armas was already building a notable portfolio with films like Blade Runner and Knives Out. But working with her so closely and personally made Affleck realize just how good she was.

Harrison Ford is no stranger to blockbuster Hollywood franchises, having played Han Solo and Indiana Jones across decades. And now, the 82-year-old actor is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross / Red Hulk in next year’s “Captain America: Brave New World.” Speaking to GQ magazine, Ford said it would be “silly” to avoid Marvel when it’s something moviegoers have clearly responded to for years now.
“I mean, this is the Marvel universe and I’m just there on a weekend pass. I’m a sailor new to this town,” Ford said about his MCU debut. “I understand the appeal of other kinds of films besides the kind we made in the ’80s and ’90s. As Marty McFly once prophetically claimed after his game-changing appearance at 1955's Enchantment Under the Sea dance, "I guess you guys aren't ready for that yet. But your kids are gonna love it." This phrase pretty perfectly sums up the phenomenon of reappraisal in the arts, especially cinema. Whether a film is truly something pioneering and ahead of its time, or whether it's just lost in the shuffle due to extenuating circumstances, the (relative) immortality of movies allows them to be periodically rediscovered and newly appreciated for what they are, once removed from the weight of expectation and other contemporary factors. This doesn't just happen to films that fly under the radar, either; even the most high-profile releases, movies featuring A-list megastars made by big name directors, can initially receive a tepid response only to become bonafide classics years, perhaps even decades, later. For examples of this, just take a...

For the longest time, it didn’t seem like a sequel to 1982’s Blade Runner would ever happen, only coming into the realm of possibility decades later. And there was only one man for the job: original director Ridley Scott, who had long desired to get a sequel to Blade Runner going. But as we all know, Scott would become too busy toiling with his Alien franchise to commit to the film. Enter Denis Villeneuve, who took the opportunity to helm Blade Runner 2049 even though he was almost certain it could tank his career.
Denis Villeneuve was initially hesitant to take on Blade Runner 2049 – and is still haunted by it – but saw the challenge as just what his career needed at the time. “I said, ‘Ok, if I do one big sci-fi movie, and I risk everything, that’s beautiful. To make a sequel to my favorite film...

Ridley Scott is a straight shooter. The filmmaking legend has never shied away from sharing his unfiltered opinion on anything, whether that's directing his actors and crew or speaking to the press. The notorious curmudgeon simply doesn't know how to beat around the bush, as evidenced by the time he revealed he was "pissed" not have been asked to direct the "Alien" sequel, or when, during a behind-the-scenes featurette for 1982's "Blade Runner," he delivered this helping of classic Scott straight-talk:
"I don't like discussion. I know exactly what I want [...] that's the director's job. The director's not meant to stand there and consult with half a dozen people in the room. The term director means 'Direct, mate. Do the job.'"
Now, Scott is gearing up to drop his 24-years-in-the-making sequel to "Gladiator." After studios passed on his unusual idea for a supernatural follow-up to his 2000 historical epic, and...

Ridley Scott is inarguably one of our greatest living filmmakers. From sci-fi masterpieces such as "Blade Runner" to underrated recent dramas such as "All the Money in the World," the man hasn't lost a step despite being well into his 80s. But is it possible that Scott just made the greatest film of his illustrious career? That may well be the case, if Scott's assessment of his own work means anything, anyhow. Per the filmmaker, his upcoming sequel "Gladiator II" may well be the best thing he's ever done.
In a recent interview with Empire, the director discussed his forthcoming sequel to the 2000 historical epic "Gladiator," which went on to win Best Picture at the Oscars. Unafraid to set expectations rather high, Scott made a pretty bold claim. "It's the best thing I've ever made," he boldly told the outlet. "One of the best things. I've made a few good 'uns,...

Ordinarily, the discussion of movie runtimes sight unseen is as silly as getting worked up over a title treatment. The length of a film you have not seen will only be of note when you buy your tickets and, should you be taking a date or hanging with friends, attempt to coordinate before- and/or after-film plans. Beyond this, whether a movie runs 80 minutes or 200 minutes is immaterial to your eventual enjoyment of it. It may seem odd if a seemingly expansive Western runs under two hours or a romantic comedy pushes two-and-a-half hours, but so what? If anything, it should be exciting that the movie is already challenging your expectations before you set foot in a theater.
I wouldn't say the work of Ridley Scott is the exception to this rule, but the master filmmaker behind "Alien," "Blade Runner," and "American Gangster" has long been satisfied with releasing shortened theatrical cuts of his movies,...
