The public expected realism, when Kirsten Thorup, author of the book, Himmel og helvede, teamed up with film director Morten Arnfred making this version of her epic story of life conditions in the city. The presentation got a more lyrical touch and concentrated on the modest character, Maria, who had difficulty coming to terms with a mature existence opposing herself to her submissive upbringing. Morten Arnfred had a way with presenting insecure persons trying to cope with the demands as an adult. Contrasting the fragile Maria, we have her gypsy like sensual mother figure and Maria's boyfriend Jonni has the strong presence that helps her along, sustained by her love for artistic expression through music. The film was honored through a number of film awards that year.
