Full Moon Features, founded by producer and director Charles Band in 1989, is world-renowned for wild films like Puppet Master, Castle Freak, Subspecies, Evil Bong and many, many more. But nestled among Full Moon’s vast entertainment universe sits Moonbeam Entertainment, the ’90s imprint that housed Band’s series of imaginative and successful fantasy films.
Beginning in 1993 and continuing well into the late ’90s, Moonbeam Entertainment released dozens of remarkable (and hugely popular) horror, sci-fi and fantasy movies made for children and families. Now, Full Moon is bringing back many of those marvelous pictures from the Moonbeam library, starting with the film that started it all: Prehysteria, released on Special Edition Blu-ray on October 9th.
Anticipating the success of Jurassic Park, this 1993 VHS-era favorite follows the misadventures of Jerry Taylor, a 12 year old Elvis-loving kid and his sister Monica (Samantha Mills), whose raisin farmer dad Frank accidentally brings home a bundle...

Charles Band set a precedent when he founded Full Moon Features over thirty years ago, creating a narrative blueprint that many modern horror filmmakers adhere to, and was an enduring and provocative figure during the VHS Boom of the ’80s and early ’90s. When Epic Entertainment bought the bankrupt Empire Pictures (Empire produced Ghoulies and Re-Animator), Charles, with an eye for the cultural merits of truly great cinema, founded Full Moon Features. Already familiar with studio filmmaking and the machinery surrounding it, including distribution, Band now had complete control.
The polymath (Band was involved to a greater or lesser extent in several other entertainment subsidiaries) went on to spawn cult movie franchises such as Puppet Master, The Gingerdead Man, and Subspecies. Most readers will remember Blockbuster Video putting out most of Band’s catalogues in their “straight-to-b-movie” bargain bins. Horror fans were enamoured with VHS covers featuring lurid images of interdimensional tentacled sex fiends,...

Barbara Crampton has been a mainstay in the horror community for more than thirty years, but she’d rather not be called a “Scream Queen.” In a recent essay, Crampton explained that for her, the term is reductive and dismisses the nuances and hard work that go into her roles. I can understand if she wants her legacy to carry more complexity than a catchy nickname, especially considering the wide range of roles that Crampton has contributed to the horror genre. In the past, she played a medical student hounded by reanimated corpses in Re-Animator, and more recently, she portrayed a grieving mother haunted by her past (as well as actual ghosts) in We Are Still Here, as well as the sinister host of a VHS board game in Beyond the Gates.
Crampton broke out in the 1980s with frequent collaborators Stuart Gordon and Jeffrey Combs to adapt H.P. Lovecraft...

Some very sad news came in late this evening from Don Coscarelli, who revealed that Angus Scrimm has passed away at the age of 89. The Phantasm director took to Twitter not too long ago to confirm that Angus Scrimm passed away peacefully and in the company of friends and family:
"Phantasm’s Angus Scrimm passed away peacefully tonight surrounded by his friends and loved ones... Angus’s performance as the Tall Man is a towering achievement in horror film history. He was the last of the classic horror movie stars... Angus was a terrific actor and an even better friend. He will be missed."
The recently announced 4k restoration of Phantasm and upcoming release of Phantasm V will be bittersweet with Angus Scrimm not around to see them, but it's a testament to his performance that this 1979 movie and the Tall Man will continue to terrify audiences for generations to come.

The 1992 Full Moon flick Doctor Mordrid starring Jeffrey Combs was originally intended to be a Doctor Strange movie. Unfortunately, the rights reverted back to Marvel before Charles Band could get the film made.
With an actual Doctor Strange movie in the works, it seems fitting Band would give his pseudo-take on the character the Blu-ray treatment.
Re-Animator’s Jeffrey Combs dons his finest Doctor Strange lounge-wear to play enigmatic interdimensional sorcerer/New York landlord Dr. Anton Mordrid, sworn to protect our world by guarding the gates of the fourth dimension from his mortal enemy, the diabolical warlock Kabul (Brian Thompson, "The X-Files"), while also finding the time to for a little romance with a pretty police research consultant tenant (Yvette Nipar, “Robocop: The Series”).
When Band lost the rights to make a Doctor Strange movie, C. Courtney Joyner’s script was rewritten to create an entirely new supernatural superhero...

I’m a bad Full Moon fan. I really am… I can now cross Bad Channels off my list of Full Moon flicks I know of but haven’t seen.
Yet another collaboration between Charles Band and his Subspecies director Ted Nicolaou, Bad Channels tells the story of Dangerous Dan (Hipp) a newly employed DJ at Kdul who is returning to the airwaves after a six month suspension by the FCC for a stunt he pulled while on the air. Covering Dan’s return to the airwaves is Lisa Cummings (Quinn) who doesn’t trust Dan and thinks he’s a hoax. She becomes the butt of his jokes when she spots a UFO landing near the radio station and Dan is quick to laugh until the alien breaks into Kdul.

Recently, I attended the HorrorHound Weekend convention in Cincinnati, Oh which is one of many conventions that have popped up in recent years devoted to the horror and science fiction genre. This particular show had well over 30 celebrities in attendance with six of the Walking Dead stars and it was obvious that a bulk of the attendees came for that. With a sold out weekend where 30,000 tickets were capped off, lines that went on forever, and a convention center packed to capacity, it was obvious this was going to be a very special show and it was.
For those who have never been to one of these shows, you can expect to find a celebrity at a booth/table with a variety of pictures and props for sale. You will have to pay for an autograph and usually a free picture with said celebrity comes with it. The average is $20 per item signed.

As a child of the 80′s, the video store was my second home. There were a few shops here in St. Louis that carried some big box titles and among them, I always remembered Wizard Video. One of Wizard Video’s most notorious releases was I Spit on Your Grave. In the past few years, VHS tapes have become a collector’s item of sorts. Some people I know go crazy and try and collect all the VHS tapes they can find. I am a bit more selective with what I pick up (I tend to go for big boxes and releases that have some nostalgia for me). There is no doubt that there is still a market in VHS. Is it the best format to watch a film, no. However, there is a certain allure to watch a film on VHS. It feels more organic and feels dynamic and...

I've been hard on Full Moon of late, I realize this. But I am an avid supporter of a lot of their earlier work - especially the Subspecies trilogy (yes, I know there was a fourth film and a spinoff, and the less said about them the better). So I'm delighted to bring word that the folks at Full Moon will be unleashing Radu into the world of 1080p horror once again!
Following the HD release of the original Subspecies a little over a year ago, Full Moon announces that Bloodstone: Subspecies II and Bloodlust: Subspecies III will follow with Blu-ray bows in 2013. Best of all? These are sounding like full-fledged special editions complete with new audio commentaries by stars Anders Hove and Denise Duff, and a new video interview with the reclusive Radu as well.

Full Moon Features are a big part of my horror upbringing. I would say they were my first exposure to direct-to-video movies. I remember going to the local video store and grabbing up every Subspecies, Trancers, Robot Jox, and Dollman release I could get my hands on. I never thought I'd see the day where these B-movie gems would get a high-definition transfer. That dream came true as I sat down to enjoy Puppet Master II on Blu-ray.
The evil puppets dig up their creator, Toulon, and bring him back to life. They need the mad puppeteer to concoct more of his formula to keep them alive. Thanks to a new group of paranormal investigators visiting the Bodega Bay Inn, the diabolical little creatures have a fresh supply of humans to use for the ingredients. Complications arise when Toulon becomes mesmerized by the leader of the group who resembles his late wife,...

In Part 1 of our exclusive chat with B-movie and home video pioneer Charles Band, we heard about his early days working for his father, director Albert Band, and how his love of collecting movies led to his own home video distribution company on the heels of Betamax's success.
In 1989 Band returned to his indie filmmaking roots when he started Full Moon Productions and released the cult classic Puppet Master, which he co-wrote and produced. From there Full Moon took off and since then has released countless B-movie confections including the Subspecies and GingerDead Man series, several Trancers sequels, The Dead Hate the Living! and Evil Bong 1-3.
For Part Two of our video interview with Band for Dread Central's Indie Horror Month celebration, we hear how Stan Lee served as the inspiration behind Band's innovative VideoZone featurettes which would accompany all Full Moon releases as well as how the...

Subspecies What Gen X horror fan doesn't remember when Subspecies came out to VHS? It got horror fans buzzing. It featured one of the most memorably freaky looking vampires of all time in the form of Anders Hove. It featured the "Tall Man", Angrus Scrimm, from Phantasm. The artwork was captivating. Subspecies was a VHS rental hit, so much so that it spawned three sequels and it helped to put Full Moon Entertainment on the map. I remember staying up late at night so that I could watch this on Cinemax. What's disappointing is that this film hasn't been given a proper DVD release ....until now! Charles Band has just announced a re-mastered edition coming out this very month.
Yes, it's true! Subspecies re-mastered in 16:9 is finally here... on both Blu-Ray and DVD! Subspecies will "premiere" at the San Diego Comic Convention on July 20th. It will then be available only at www.

There is a place where Horror lovers can go and feel like they're part of something. A wonderfully twisted family. A place where, finally, they're not the outcasts with weird tastes and they're not the freaks for loving gore. The people outside these walls who don't have the stomach to see someone's eye plucked out of their head are the freaks here. That place is Creation Entertainment's Weekend Of Horrors.
This year's Mecca of Horror was at the Marriot at the Los Angeles Airport. All the little gore hounds flocked to multiple rooms of entertainment and spectacle like the Theater Room that featured many legendary Horror actors, actresses and filmmakers in discussion panels and Q&A's like the great John Carpenter, Tom Savini and Asia Argento as well as reunions of the cast and crew of such classic films as Demons and Nightmare on Elm Street.

If you have Netflix and are a horror fan in need of something to watch this Labor Day weekend, one look at this gargantuan list I compiled of the new terror titles Netflix has added for instant streaming in just the first three days of this month should keep you busy until Labor Day next year. You'll find something for everyone, from older titles to recent releases, famous to obscure, classic to not-so-classic, monsters to maniacs - you name it.
For the record, I considered compiling this list in alphabetical order or by year of the film's release, but then I realized I had already spent well over an hour just sorting through the massive catalogue of titles Netflix has now made available for instant streaming and realized Labor Day would be over by the time I finished arranging this list in any kind of order. Ready? Here you go.

Welcome back to our weekly Top Ten Tuesday, where we the Movie Geeks butt heads until we’ve decided on the top ten picks for a specific category each week. Well, that is when the lot of us aren’t away freezing our nubbins off in the cold coolness of the Sundance Film Festival. So, with Scott and Kirk currently away on a mission to serve up some salty Sundance servitude (all for our readers) I’ve decided to throw a little something together instead of letting this week go wihtout some sort of Top Ten entry.
