“The Daily Show” host Jon Stewart wrapped up his Election Night special with a direct message to pollsters: “I do want to very quickly send a quick message to all the pollsters — um, blow me.”
Stewart’s barb on Tuesday night came right as Donald Trump was securing enough votes to beat Democratic nominee Kamala Harris, sending him back to The White House in January.
Heading into Election Day, many big-name pundits and pollsters said it was going to be a tight race between the two candidates. Polling guru Nate Silver, notably, said Harris won 40,012 of the 80,000 simulations he ran the night before the election; that comment quickly became a meme on X, with many users joking about the 80,000 simulations they’d run.
He wasn’t the only one who said it was a close race with Harris holding a slight advantage, either. FiveThirtyEight, the stats-focused site Silver used to run,...

In the latest example of 30 Rock being less sitcom and more Nostradamus-esque prophecy, former American teenager and big little liar Shailene Woodley has been cast to star as Janis Joplin in an upcoming biopic. This is per Variety, which reports that the film will be funded by California tax credits.

Who would have thought that in 2003, when Ben Affleck had yet to don the Bat-cape, he could foresee the streaming revolution? As if channeling Nostradamus, the actor, 52, predicted our binge-watching future while promoting The Battle Of Shaker Heights.

He casually suggested (or envisioned) a future where movies would be available on-demand with a tiered structure. Was it a flash of genius or just a beginner’s luck? What followed was nothing short of a plot twist: Netflix, Spotify, and a legion of others upended how we consume entertainment.
Fast forward to today, and that old interview clip has resurfaced, causing a stir on social media. His foresight into the rise of Netflix and Spotify has left many in awe, proving that he’s got more than just good looks going for him.

The TV industry can benefit from some of the hard lessons learnt in the film business, Johanna Koljonen, the author of the influential Nostradamus report told a Seriencamp audience in Germany. As a panel of industry experts weighed in, the sense was the much-used “survive ‘til ‘25” aphorism might need to be extended into 2026 or beyond.
“I don’t know if that [phrase] means we survive to ‘25, or through ’25 and to ’26, but we will work through it, and we will maneuver as we’ve always done,” said Danna Stern, who runs In Transit Productions and is the former head of Yes Studios. “Yes, with less commissioning. Yes, with less money. We will try to integrate, new technologies, social media and new ways of communicating what we’re doing to our audiences.”
Asked if the fever had broken and the industry now had clarity on the road ahead, she added: “There’s never been clarity.

The annual presentation of the acclaimed report featured industry experts in a discussion on how and when the return to normality could be expected. Göteborg Film Festival’s Nostradamus initiative has made its annual appearance at the Cannes Next section of Marché du Film Online. Every year, the Nostradamus report is one of the most anticipated, aiming to predict the near future of the industry. Under the title “Making Choices: How to Build for a Better New Normal”, the session explored ways in which the industry can adapt in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. The session was introduced by Cannes Next head Sten-Kristian Saluveer who presented the host of the discussion, media analyst Johanna Koljonen from Göteborg’s Kulturakademin. After a brief introduction where Koljonen mentioned the lack of racial balance in an “all-white” panel, and how the serious issues of racism and the current pandemic affect the audience’s behaviour,...

In 2014, if someone claimed Annabelle would spawn the ‘Conjurverse’s’ most successful spinoff sequels, I’d’ve gone blue in the face from laughter. Not even Nostradamus could prophesize the leap in quality from Annabelle to Annabelle: Creation, and now Annabelle to Annabelle Comes Home.
Frequent ‘Conjurverse’ screenwriter Gary Dauberman helms this third continuation in the Warrens’ fight against dolly-dearest damnation, which is an absolute monster mashin’ blast. It’s like walking through a high-concept Halloween Horror Nights maze at Universal, and I mean that in the best funhouse way. Dauberman’s screenplay answers that oft-pondered Cabin In The Woods question, as characters unwittingly choose their collective fate, of “What happens if *all* the monsters get loose?” Annabelle isn’t alone, and as depicted, there ain’t no party like an Annabelle party because an Annabelle party don’t stop (the screams).

As the Starz spy-fi mashup Counterpart nears the end of its first season, critics and viewers notice parallels with the J.J. Abrams-helmed Fringe. Both series have alternate universes, a liberal use of doppelgangers and an increasingly tense and at times deadly turf war between the two worlds.

A long time ago – well, 35 years – in a place not quite so far away, an art director named Roger Christian, who had won an Oscar for his work on Star Wars, was asked by that film’s director, George Lucas, to make a short film to accompany The Empire Strikes Back. The result, Black Angel had a short life in cinemas and was presumed lost until recently, but now Christian is turning it into a full-length feature with genre stalwarts Rutger Hauer and John Rhys-Davies, at the head of the cast.Despite the short lingering in limbo until it was discovered in Universal’s extensive archives in 2013, it has been something of a cult sensation, and is cited as an influence on other films including John Boorman’s Excalibur.Christian, who in the intervening years became a director on the likes of Nostradamus, Masterminds and (whisper it) Battlefield Earth, is...

Coming from the super-duo J.J. Abrams and J.H. Wyman (who also brought Fringe to the small screen), this new sci-fi series invites viewers to explore life in the near future in the year 2048 where robots and androids are a routine part of everyday life; so much so that they are even paired with human partners in the police force. I feel like this is the umpteenth attempt to tell the story of Escobar’s rise and downfall, but maybe Relativity will finally get it done. The film focuses on the personal war between Escobar and General Hugo Martinez, whose life rights are part of the deal as are rights to Joe Toft, the former chief of the Bogota office of the Drug Enforcement Agency who was involved in the pursuit, capture and death of Escobar.

Here is another new column I'm going to start. Every so often I am going to make a confession. Not about my personal life, don't get too excited. Instead I'll be making a confession about a movie. Either a movie I secretly hate or secretly love. I'm warning you, some of the things I say may shock and even appal you and I do expect backlash, but everything I write is the truth and are my honest opinions. I have a rather odd taste in film and don't usually agree with the general consensus on films. This week's edition is about a movie I actually liked. My confession is I secretly enjoyed... Battlefield Earth. Yes you heard me. I enjoyed Battlefield Earth! Now pick up your jaw off the floor and continue reading, just hear me out. For those of you unfamiliar with Battlefield Earth, it is widely regarded as...

Sin City and Batman Begins in 2005 saw the mighty Rutger Hauer return to roles in high profile genre films. He has been working solidly of course, but these day's one might forget just what a genre film powerhouse the Dutchman was, during a period spanning about 15 years, from the early 80's to the mid nineties. Of course Hauer’s quintessential role is that of Roy Batty, the replicant on the run who races against time to find his creator. While avoiding the Blade Runner Rick Deckard played by Harrison Ford. Probably his second most recognizable role is the powerhouse performance as the uber menacing Hitch Hiker John Ryder in the 1986 movie The Hitcher. "John Ryder" as played by Hauer is probably my favorite on screen psycho, as Hauer relies almost entirely on performance to menace both the viewer and his onscreen victim Jim Halsey (C. Thomas Howell) in a movie...
