The Indian version was heavily cut by the CBFC to remove approximately 22 minutes with the run time of 106 mins (CFL/3/8/2002-MUM). In 2004, the film was further cut of 34 seconds (CFL/3/40/2004-MUM).

The movie in the USA was given an NC-17 rating. Since some video rental chains like Blockbuster Video would not carry movies with this rating, some of the sex scenes, nudity and sexual assault details were cut to produce an R-rated video version. The complete NC-17 version was available on VHS, DVD and Blu-ray. The R-rated version, as of 2023, is only available on VHS.

The edited "director's R-rated version" created for Blockbuster Video and similar video store chains is 128 minutes long. To create the R-rated version, 61 seconds of footage were cut and 20 seconds were altered by using different camera angles. The R-rated version, as of 2023, is only available on VHS.

The rape scene was cut by 17 seconds for UK releases. In 2017, all previous cuts were waived by the BBFC.

When the film aired on VH1, any nudity especially during the stage performances and sex scenes, were digitally painted over to match skin tones or previous articles of clothing that covered those areas. The heavily altered VH1 broadcast version credits "Jan Jansen" as director.
