David Mitchell and Anna Maxwell Martin will return in for Ludwig series 2. More news can be found below these words.
David Mitchell has become a familiar face in UK comedy, whether trying to discern who’s telling the truth in Would I Lie To You? or as the uptight Mark Corrigan alongside long time comedy partner Robert Webb in Jesse Armstrong and Sam Bain’s Peep Show.
He also took on the role of William Shakespeare in Ben Elton’s sitcom Upstart Crow, and reprised the role for a stage adaptation that opened in 2020 and then again when the play was restaged in 2022.
Just as Alan Davies took a left turn from stand-up comedy to drama in David Renwick’s superb Jonathan Creek, Mitchell recently moved into the realm of crime drama to play the title role in six part BBC series Ludwig.

British actor and satirist John Bird has died aged 86.
The Bremner, Bird and Fortune star passed away “peacefully” on Christmas Eve at a care home in West Sussex, UK, according to his representatives.
Bremner, Bird and Fortune, which was from Vera Productions, ran for 16 seasons in the UK on Channel 4, ending in 2008.
His long-time comedy partner Rory Bremner led the tributes, writing on Twitter he was “deeply saddened to hear that the great John Bird has left us. One of the most modest of men and most brilliant of satirists. And one of the last surviving pillars of the anti-establishment.”
Bremner urged people to view Bird and John Fortunes’ ‘Long Johns’ comedy sketch interviews, in which they played members of the establishment, “and ask yourself if it’s ever been more beautifully done.

“I used to watch from the wings and marvel at how the two friends made it look so effortless, so blissfully funny, their skill and enjoyment in the moment making light of the seriously detailed research that went into each piece.”
Bird also worked with Fortune and Bremner on Rory Bremner, Who Else? for Channel 4 and the BBC’s Now Something Else.
Fortune died aged 74 on New Year’s Eve 2013.
“Lord knows, satire has missed them this last decade and now that loss is permanent,” said Bremner. “John may not have felt he got his life right, but by god he got it written.”
Bird met Fortune at Cambridge University, where he was part of the famous Cambridge Footlights Revue, where his contemporaries included Peter Cook.
His career included spells at the Royal Court Theatre and acted in fantasy comedy film Jabberwocky, UK comedy series Yes, Prime Minister and One Foot in the Grave, and also played Professor Plum in a TV adaptation of board game Cluedo. He also appeared in popular British detective shows Jonathan Creek, Inspector Morse and Midsomer Murders.
He is survived by wife Libby and two stepsons.

How Older Women, an Oft-Forgotten Demo, Are Leading the Charge on Boutique Streaming Service Britbox
You think streaming television, you think hip millennials giving the middle finger to cable services. You think British television, you think retirement-aged women, sipping tea while watching period dramas while wearing a lot of very interesting hats.
And yet, several streaming services find themselves battling it out by combining the two concepts. BritBox, owned by British networks BBC Worldwide and ITV, launched last year in a busy field that also includes companies like Acorn, Walter Presents and others focused on international titles.
Entering an already-crowded streaming landscape, those digital services have opted to go after narrower enthusiast audiences rather than try to compete with the monolith that is Netflix. Niche comes with its own challenges, however, as evidenced by attempts like Seeso (a NBC Universal service aimed at young comedy fans), which shut down after failing to attract a large enough subscriber base.

We celebrate the work of M.R. James, whose eerie ghost stories were made into a festive tradition by the BBC...
A shadow lurking just beyond the edge of the vision. Dusty manuscripts bearing fragments of ancient testimony, conflicting and confounding. The last full series of Jonathan Creek, back in 2014, divided critics and audience; at the time our own reviewer complained that the central mysteries lacked the intricacy and peril of previous instalments, and there was a feeling that the spark had gone out of the show ever since Creek put away his duffel coat and moved out of the windmill.

It’s not a very scintillating title, Passengers, is it? Especially for a film about a kilometre-long ship hurtling through space with the two romantic leads trapped inside it. Love’s Labour's Lost In Space might have suited it better, had Futurama not beaten screenwriter Jon Spaihts to the punch by about 17 years. So Passengers it is: the latest film from Norwegian director Mortum Tyldum, who previously brought us the superb Jo Nesbo-adapted thriller Headhunters and Oscar-nominated Alan Turing drama, The Imitation Game.

Amid the cosy repeats, big movies and inescapable cranberry-stuffed cookery shows on TV this month are a few original gems. Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton’s Inside No. 9 festive special The Devil Of Christmas (Tuesday the 27th of December, 10pm, BBC Two) is top of our must-watch list. Hot on its heels is Yonderland’s family friendly Yonder Yuletide (Saturday the 24th of December, 6.30pm, Sky One). Caroline, 54, said: ''Once you're over 40, and over 50 particularly, people don't perceive you as a sexual being any more. It's certainly not true in my...

Alan Davies thinks soaps are ''responsible'' for the ''death of the sitcom''. The 'Jonathan Creek' star claims long-running shows such as 'EastEnders' and 'Coronation Street' are filling up precious time slots that could be better used for new comedy series. Insisting he and his family are not fans, he said: ''Any soap gets turned off. Just the theme tune of 'EastEnders' is enough ''I hold soaps responsible for the death of the sitcom. All the best slots have been taken by the soaps. The actors are doing their best in an impossible situation, with so many lines to learn in not enough time.'' The...

We asked Den Of Geek’s writers to recommend brilliant comedy shows that deserve to have more of a fuss made about them. Here they are...
Banging a drum about stuff we love is more or less our remit on Den Of Geek - hence what many readers have started referring to as the ‘inexplicably regular' appearance of Statham, squirrels and Harold Bishop from Neighbours on these pages.
To that end then, we asked our writers which comedy shows (past and present, UK or otherwise, on TV, radio, or online…) deserved more praise, and here are the ones they chose. You might already like them too, or you might discover something new to dig out and enjoy. That’s the fun of it.
Please note that this list isn’t ranked in any order, nor is it exhaustive. It’s compiled from the opinions of a group of different people,...

In America, Halloween is a fun day, an excuse for a party and a close third behind Thanksgiving and Christmas when it comes to annual celebrations. In Britain, it's more a case of shutting your curtains and hoping that the kids down the road don't egg your windows.
But that negative approach to Halloween needs to end now. What we lack in pumpkins and parties, we can make up for with an evening of hiding under the duvet with scary TV shows.
While there might not be much actual horror programming on October 31 (although a new series of Citizen Khan on BBC One is frightening us in a different way), a quick delve into the world of Netflix (other streaming services are available, yadda, yadda) means that there are frights and thrills on tap for anyone who wants to get into the spooky spirit of things.
Here are 11 spine-chilling treats...

If TV executives giving you the silent treatment about your favourite shows is getting you all hot under the collar, all you need to do is to get in touch with the Q&A, and we'll sort 'em ahhhht (...when we can).
This week, we've got scoop on Jonathan Creek, Glee, Once Upon a Time and more!
Any news on when Jonathan Creek will be back on our screens?
We put this question to the Creekster himself, Alan Davies, at the launch of his new Dave series As Yet Untitled and were informed that the future of Jonathan Creek is very much in the hands of series writer David Renwick.
Though critical reaction was mixed, the first full Creek series for ten years pulled in strong ratings earlier this year - around the 7-8m mark - so BBC One is eager for more, but Alan told us: "It's always...

There's something horribly grim about stalking somebody's social media accounts after they've died, but it is fitting of the late Rik Mayall that a glance at what might have been a brief foray into the world of Twitter should provide much amusement.
Assuming it was actually his, Mayall's journey into Twitter lasted a single tweet back in 2010 and it was suitably brash, uncompromising, sweary and laugh-out-loud funny. Exactly like the man who so many TV viewers had grown to love over the last 30 years.
Opening my very own Twitter to stop another bastard from doing it. So fuck off & don't expect to hear from me any time soon. Love Rik x

British comedy legend Rik Mayall has died at just 56. A spokesman for his management company confirmed that Mayall passed away this morning. Mayall is survived by his wife and three children.
The actor and comedian is best remembered for his small screen roles such as the obnoxious poetry-writing anarchist Rick in cult sitcom "The Young Ones," the sex-crazed arrogant Lord Flashheart in several versions of "Blackadder," the sociopathic right-wing back bencher Alan Beresford B'Stard in "The New Statesman," and the perverted Richie in "Bottom". Other TV credits include "Jonathan Creek" and "Filthy Rich & Catflap"
Mayall also appeared in several films, most famously as the title character in "Drop Dead Fred". He also appeared in "Carry On Columbus," "Guest House Paradiso," "The Wind in the Willows," "Shock Treatment," "Errors of the Human Body" and even a tiny role in "An American Werewolf in London".

Sad news has just broken via the BBC that Rik Mayall, beloved British comic actor, known for his irreverent, often outrageous style has died, according to his manager.
There are no details concerning the cause of death yet, but Mayall was only 56 years old.
Mayall will be most fondly for his performance in seminal British comedy The Young Ones, which cemented him and his fellow players as the cutting edge of the alternative comedy movement, as well as the creation of memorable grotesques like Alan B-Stard in The New Statesman and Richie opposite long-term collaborator Adrian Edmonson ingloriously obnoxious cult sitcom Bottom. He also rightly stole every scene in Blackadder as anti-hero Lord Flashheart.
In film terms, Mayall starred in Drop Dead Fred as a grotesque imaginary friend opposite Phoebe Cates, and was unjustly cut from the Harry Potter franchise when Peeves the Poltergeist was deemed surplus to requirements.

Terrible news: Rik Mayall has died at the age of 56.
News
Horrible, horrible news. Comedian, actor and writer Rik Mayall has died at the age of 56.
The news has been confirmed by a spokesman for his management company, to the Press Association.
Mayall sprung to fame for many of us through The Young Ones. But heck: there's so much that he did. Bottom. Drop Dead Fred. The New Statesman. More recently, his work in Jonathan Creek. And his scene stealing Lord Flashheart in Blackadder too - one of many roles that's going to be enjoyed for many decades to come. Just watch this for proof.
One of the most gifted comedy actors of his generation - and legitimately a unique one - Mayall is survived by his wife and three children.

Caroline Quentin has revealed that she would "love to go back" to Jonathan Creek.
The actress told Graham Norton on his BBC Radio 2 show on Saturday (May 17) that she would be interested in a return to the hit detective series.
"I would love to go back and do it," she said. "I basically left to give birth.
"Things moved on I suppose [for the writers] and they cast other people. Consequently I've never returned to it.
"Given the opportunity I'd love to but at the moment I haven't heard from them at all."
Quentin, who appeared as Maddy Magellan in the mystery series between 1997 and 2000, also told Norton that she was "surprised and delighted" the popularity of the show has endured.
Alan Davies, who plays Jonathan Creek, recently said that his character "will never meet anyone quite like Maddy again".

Jonathan Creek concludes its fifth series with a satisfying, comic noodle-scratcher...
This review contains spoilers.
5.3 The Curse Of The Bronze Lamp
After a disappointing start to the new series, Jonathan Creek seemed to return to form last week in The Sinner And The Sandman with a much more recognisable setup with one key mystery to solve. Despite not being the most exciting of mysteries, nor one of the most bloodthirsty; The Sinner and The Sandman certainly turned in some great performances, notably from John Bird. Alan Davies seemed more enthusiastic in the role as the eponymous hero and the whole setup felt a lot less perilous with far fewer contrived jokes or plot points.
Despite a more positive start to the episode, The Curse Of The Bronze Lamp still lacked pace and excitement. It has often been the case with previous series of Jonathan Creek...

Jonathan Creek's latest series came to a conclusion tonight (March 14) with 'The Curse Of The Bronze Lamp'. But has Alan Davies's magical magician lost some of his old charm?
In recent years, the show has been reduced to hit-and-miss specials and the latest three-episode run from writer David Renwick has picked up some of the programme's worst ever reviews from fans and critics.
The ratings are still solid, but not spectacular, and there's a growing sense that the show may have reached its sell-by-date. The opening episode of the current series, 'The Letters Of Septimus Noone', poked fun at the success of Sherlock with a spoof Benedict Cumberbatch-style character making a hash of a mystery.
Creek in its prime could have got away with such a gag - Sherlock is sometimes a bit pompous and the show is due a send-up. If Creek was still at its witty,...

Alan Davies has said that it would be "amazing" to star in Jonathan Creek for "another ten years".
Davies told Digital Spy and others on set that he will play the amateur detective for as long as creator David Renwick wants to continue the series.

"I do enjoy doing it and the viewing figures are still amazing. I think if they dropped off, David would have to make the call."
The last Jonathan Creek special, 'The Clue of the Savant's Thumb', pulled in 8.75m viewers for BBC One in April 2013.
The comedy-drama returned for its first full series in 10 years tonight (February 28) on BBC One.

Jonathan Creek is back and this time he's sticking around for a little while.
Yes, after a decade of one-off specials, BBC One's crime comedy-drama kicks off its first series in ten years tonight. In total, there's three new hour-long mysteries for Creek geeks to cherish.
To mark this momentous occasion, Digital Spy has looked back on the past four series (and five specials) to pick out the very best from Alan Davies's amateur detective.
'Jack in the Box' - series one, episode two - first aired May 17, 1997
Jonathan Creek has done more than one locked room mystery in its 17 years on air, but it nailed the formula right out of the gate with series one's superb 'Jack in the Box', which sees a retired comedian shot dead inside a nuclear fallout shelter. The shelter was locked from the inside and the victim's arthritis rules out suicide - so who pulled the trigger?...

The departure of Sheridan Smith from Jonathan Creek will not be addressed on-screen.
The new series of the BBC One comedy-drama sees Creek (Alan Davies) solving mysteries alongside his wife Polly (Sarah Alexander).
"We don't mention [Sheridan's character] Joey," Davies confirmed to Digital Spy and others, on set for the new three-part run.
"It is the destiny of former sidekicks that they never get mentioned again! It is becoming a convention of this show."
Amateur detective Creek was previously assisted by Smith's Joey Ross, Julia Sawalha's Carla Borrego and, originally, Caroline Quentin's Maddie Magellan.
"He will never meet anyone quite like Maddy again," Davies acknowledged. "That part was deliberately written for Caroline because Caroline is pretty bonkers - she was brilliant in that role."
The new series of Jonathan Creek - the show's first full series for 10 years - begins tonight at 9pm on BBC One.

Alan Davies has promised a more mature Jonathan Creek in the new series.
The BBC One comedy-drama returns for its first full series in 10 years tonight, with an older Creek having ditched his famous duffle coat.
"The duffle coat is on the costume rail but it hasn't been brought out for any scenes," Davies told Digital Spy and others on set. "Who wears the same duffle coat for 17 years?"
The new three-part Jonathan Creek series - written by creator David Renwick - will see the amateur detective team up with his wife Polly (Sarah Alexander) to solve mysteries.
"David wanted to write about a married couple - he wanted to write ongoing serious relationships," Davies explained.
His co-star Alexander added: "First of all, Polly is not keen but she soon gets drawn into it all. Some of the mysteries are very personal to her - especially the first episode.

Alan Davies' marriage inspired the new series of 'Jonathan Creek'. The crime-solving drama will return for a new series this week and Alan - who married children's book author Katie Maskell in 2007 - says art may have imitated life as his titular detective is married in the latest episodes. He said: ''The fact he's married may be tied to the fact that I'm married. It always said something about Creek that he'd be completely withdrawn from society and other people. Now it says something about him that he's re-entered the atmosphere and is able to sustain a relationship. You couldn't just...
