Television history is littered with failed sitcoms headlined by comedians that audiences seem to love — in the right show. Turn up in a stinker, however, and the shows are gone in a blink. Matthew Perry was great in Friends, but no one wanted Mr. Sunshine. Audiences adored McLean Stevenson in M*A*S*H but said goodbye to Hello Larry. Jon Cryer scored with Two and Half Men but was booted from his Extended Family this year.
Here are four more comedy stars who flopped multiple times while trying to get sitcoms off the ground…
1 Jason Bateman
Bateman received two well-deserved Emmy nominations for his performance as Michael Bluth in Arrested Development, recognition that came decades after his breakthrough as a Tiger Beat cover boy in Silver Spoons and The Hogan Family. In between, however, he starred in several sitcom flops that lasted a year or less, including It’s Your Move...

Pablo Torre is about to become a creature of two worlds.
The veteran ESPN writer and on-air personality is leaving the Disney sports-media giant — and he’s staying, too. Torre is joining Meadowlark Media, the content company founded by former ESPN chief John Skipper and the sports commentator Dan Le Batard. And yet, Torre is expected to remain a regular contributor to “Around The Horn” and “Pardon The Interruption,” two of the mainstay programs on the ESPN daytime schedule.
“They are looking to build another show directly out of ‘The Dan LeBatard Show,’ which is a monster,” Torre says of Meadowlark in an interview. Torre envisions a digital program with audio and video components that will allow him to “tell original stories, do a bit of journalism and figure out how to make that show a home that can fit all of the things I aspire to do creatively.” Torre...

Michael B. Jordan and Tessa Thompson have teamed up once again — this time to throw cyber criminals against walls.
The two stars appear in a new cybersecurity awareness PSA from Amazon as a part of the company’s protect and connect program, which aims to teach Internet users how to protect themselves from phishing and other cybersecurity threats.
The PSA features Jordan and Thompson saving unsuspecting internet users from sketchy internet schemes. The PSA comes as a follow up on Amazon’s commitments at the White House Cybersecurity Summit in 2021.
“Being part of this PSA was an opportunity to work with Tessa again, one of my mentors — Paul Hunter, and to support the Amazon family to get this message out that cyber security and your privacy is really important,” Jordan said. “Nobody wants their information stolen. As much as you can protect your information, and your family and friends, you should do that.

“Around the Horn” (Ath) is a television sports show on ESPN. It’s like your favorite sports radio show, but on steroids, not the same as “Round the Horne.”
As you read this, you are probably wondering where you can watch the new episodes of “Around the Horn.” Well, there are a few options.

Someone wake up Dan Patrick: Keith Olbermann is returning to ESPN next week. The assignment is temporary — for now, at least — as Olbermann will fill in for Michael Wilbon opposite Tony Kornheiser on popular sports debate program “Pti.” The guest stint appears to be another step in a possible full-time reunion between Olbermann and self-proclaimed Leader in Sports. Next Thursday and Friday, March 1 and 2, marks Olbermann’s first time doing “Pardon The Interruption.” Also Read: Keith Olbermann Says NBC News 'Enabled' Matt Lauer, Slams Fired Star as 'Vindictive' Olbermann got his start in media co-hosting ESPN’s “SportsCenter” alongside Patrick, which...

The first Monday Night Raw of the new year brought us some interesting things to talk about. We had a wonderful Last Man Standing match between Sami Zayn vs Braun Strowman which not only made Braun look like a vicious bad ass but gave Sami a much needed boost with the grit and determination he showed in the loss. We had an amazing, yet short, Number One Contender’s match for the Raw Women’s Championship between Nia Jax and Bayley which saw Bayley get the win after Sasha Banks’ music hit causing Nia to become distracted. Yet the end of the show is what really hit me most and not in a good way. It was the debut interview segment of The Kevin Owens Show with his special guest Bill Goldberg.

A review of tonight's "The Americans" coming up just as soon as I enjoy a Milky Way... "What do you want, Philip? A guarantee life's gonna be easy?" -Elizabeth The last fifteen years of cable drama have offered us so many different creative methods of corpse disposal that it would seem all but impossible for a new one to feel shocking. But dammit if I didn't squirm and groan throughout that sequence of Philip, Elizabeth and Yousaf methodically breaking the limbs of Annelise's body(*) so they could fit it into a suitcase. That Annelise is already dead doesn't make it any less cringe-inducing, and the swift, silent efficiency with which Philip and Elizabeth go about the task suggests this is not the first time they've had to do something like this. (*) Played, at different phases of the scene, by a dummy, a contortionist, and actress Gillian Alexy herself. I also...

I am what James Poniewozik at Time would call an Everybody Gets a Trophy kind of person. With the Baseball Hall of Fame, I'm a big Hall kind of guy. (Vote Tim Raines this year, people!) I like honoring as much excellence as I can, whenever I can, even if it comes at the risk of making everything a bit less special because so many things are being called special. Even before the Too Much Good TV deluge began in the last couple of years, I was always somebody who tried to squeeze more than 10 shows into his yearly top 10 lists, whether through ties or other bending of the rules. One year, number 2 on my list was "Fact-based movies and miniseries," a ridiculous cheat that allowed me to squeeze six productions into one slot; another, I didn't even do a top 10 at all, but an amorphous list of things like...

Live television depends on a sense of chemistry between performers, on the feeling (whether real or feigned) that the people appearing on our screens enjoy spending time together. An entire segment of the television spectrum -- late-night shows, sketch-comedy programs, talk shows -- all depend on the camaraderie between fellow participants. Personality-driven television lives and dies on the illusion of intimacy blossoming between its performers. We all are familiar with the clanging, fake version of on-screen friendship encouraged by local news programs and the like. A recent "Inside Amy Schumer" sketch had Schumer and Josh Charles as news anchors forcing out yuks and tossing back and forth bad puns. The ex-football players trading painful banter most winter Sundays on Fox, CBS, and Espn fit the same bill. (Do they practice their booming laughs before taping?) Meanwhile, the best sports show on television, Espn's "Pardon the Interruption," depends on the cranky.

There’s so much cr*p on TV it almost makes you want to give up hope. I’m here to remind you that there is great, smart, funny, dramatic, and well written TV shows out there beyond the prototypical shows that you’re already familiar with. Everyone knows Breaking Bad, Modern Family, Game of Thrones, True Blood, Sons of Anarchy, and Mad Men are all great shows.
However, with so much bullsh*t making it to the air, you might be missing out on some gems. That’s what this is, a top 5 list of shows that you might not be watching. Although if you have good taste, then you’re probably already well aware of these shows. Fusing love and Workaholics is never an easy task, but throwing Adam, Blake, and Ders into the pits of Valentine's Day singledom was never going to end well. The trio fall in love with a webcam girl, causing credit card debit, broken laptops, and broken hearts. But we do get the invention of the phrase "milk missles," so we can't be too mad at that. The best quotes below:

"You're Such a hypothetical! You're a hypothetic."
"She's absolutely obsessed with the male human penis. And that is awesome. Because we have those things."
"I would like to ask you to wobble your noobs back and forth so I can ejaculate in my pants, not using my hands."
"Pardon The Interruption. It's more than just a cool show about sports. It's also the first words you heard your lovers spout."

If you're a sports fan (like me) and you had a habit of flipping channels late at night between 2004 and 2006 (also like me), then you should be familiar with the Sklar Brothers, whose Cheap Seats show provided four seasons of good laughs on Espn Classic. That series examined sports with a pop-culture minded, MST3K-styled attitude; now, the identical twins have returned with new show that does exactly the opposite. Randy and Jason Sklar are the hosts of Nerd Down and Ten, a new show on Nerdist that examples Internet culture using the production style of a sports talk show. As this linked commenter notes, the show is almost an exact copy of Espn's Pardon The Interruption, the long-running show where two hosts discuss a list of sports topics in a rapid-fire manner. Nerd Down even has a third analyst who corrects the main duo's errors, just like in Pti.

When Bill Simmons first became the Boston Sports Guy, writing an obscure blog for AOL in the early days of the internets, he gradually cultivated a loyal audience who appreciated his exhaustive essays dissecting Beantown’s sport fandom while sprinkling in Karate Kid and Road House references. He wrote from a fan’s perspective, which is the only perspective he could afford at the time, but that voice ultimately made him famous and influential. He’s been at Espn now since 2001, and if he doesn’t yet run the network, he certainly is one of the Sports Leaders’ most important assets.

Everyone has them: complete wastes of time. Guilty pleasures, as it were. Shows that don't necessarily add anything significant to our lives, but we can't keep from going back to them, over and over again. There's nothing wrong with them - in fact, some of them are pretty awesome. Since it's been a slow news week and I've had plenty of time to spend thinking on such things, I present to you my six favorite wastes of time.
In no particular order:
1. The Mole (ABC, 2001-2004, 2008)
For the most part, I loathe reality television; I've just never been all that interested in any of the series. The Mole, however, had me from early on, indulging the part of me that loves spy shows and almost had a career in the CIA. I was glad to have a series where I was forced to figure out clues that actually took effort to spot and decode.

For the most part, I loathe reality television; I've just never been all that interested in any of the series. The Mole, however, had me from early on, indulging the part of me that loves spy shows and almost had a career in the CIA. I was glad to have a series where I was forced to figure out clues that actually took effort to spot and decode.

Pardon the Interruption: Kanye West’s Year in Review
In 2009, Kanye West found himself on every most-hated celebrity list known to man thanks to the infamous Taylor-gate, earning him Spin’s Scrooge of the Year and causing the death of his mega tour with Lady Gaga. Never one to stay down (or quiet) too long, West made a heroic resurgence in 2010 as he returned to music, made his debut on Twitter and engaged in a feud that still has fans scratching their heads in confusion. Equal parts explosive, empathic and enterprising, Celebuzz celebrates 2010’s greatest and most talked about comeback story: Kanye West and his pop redemption. Haunted by...

Happy Holidays! If you're a civilian (that's Hollywood speak for non-showbiz types), this time of year undoubtedly means turkey, shopping, cooking, hosting dinners or traveling to them. If you're a voting member of the Academy or any of the guilds or major Oscar precursor awards groups (full disclosure: I'm a member of the Bfca, the Broadcast Film Critics Association), this time of year also means lots of packages in the mail. "For Your Consideration" screeners have been arriving virtually every day for a couple of weeks now. The Oscar campaigns are hoping that voters watch these screeners over the holiday break, and that the films in question will then show up on those corresponding ballots. Pardon the interruption into the best-laid plans, but what holiday break? Whether you're traveling to a family member or friend's place - but especially if you're hosting family or friends for the holidays - how...

Shelley Long will reprise her "Modern Family" role as Jay's (Ed O'Neill) ex-wife in an episode set for early next year. The occasion? Baby Lily's birthday. [TV Guide]
Striking crew members on "The Biggest Loser" confronted replacement workers who crossed the picket lines at the show's location on Monday (Nov. 15). Filming went on, but it's unclear if on-air stars Alison Sweeney, Bob Harper and Jillian Michaels were on set. [Ktla]
Amanda Walsh ("Sons & Daughters") has landed the title role in The CW's pilot "Danni Lowinski." She'll play a former hairdresser who worked her way through law school and sets up shop in a mall kiosk. [Deadline]

Dearest Rick Sanchez,
I heard about you getting fired from CNN, and I'd like to offer my deepest condolences. I work from home, and a lot of people are jealous of the fact that I don't have to squeeze into public transportation five times a week, I can poop in my own bathroom, and I can take three-hour lunches. But the one thing I wouldn't have traded with any cubicle slave is watching you at noon (here on the West Coast).
Rick's List was required viewing at my house, the perfect two-hour bridge between wiping the crusty sleep from my eyes and Espn's duo of Around the Horn and Pardon the Interruption. But then CNN made this statement: "Rick Sanchez is no longer with the company. We... More >>...

When I made the proposal that Pajiba might include a sports column, I had a few specific elements in mind. I envisioned it as general interest and topical. I wanted to write something that dwelled somewhere between Espn's Outside The Lines and Pardon The Interruption. That is, it would tend toward human-interest stories, examine the cultural implications and offshoots of the sports world, and look beyond the Xs, the Os, the wins, the losses, and the box scores. I hoped to inject a bit of wit and humor into it. Above all, it would assume the objective viewpoint that sports journalism demands. That is, my own personal rooting interests would not be responsible for dictating any of the editorial biases that end up on the page.

Jimmy Johnson, noted Fox sports analyst and former Dallas Cowboys head coach, is one of the contestants on the newest outing of "Survivor," taking place in Nicaragua. He popped on to Espn's "Pardon the Interruption" Wednesday (Sept. 1) to tell hosts Mike Wilbon and Tony Kornheiser about the experience.
"I had no mirror, I had no comb, I had no hairspray ... it was brutal. I had no idea how my hair looked," jokes Johnson, about his infamous white coif.
When asked why he wanted to do "Survivor," Johnson says, "When I was a little kid, I had thoughts about going to the Amazon and the animals and nature ... obviously football kept me from doing that, but once I got out of football ... I applied for it three different times -- got turned down once, second time because of medical, I couldn't do it, finally got accepted the third time."

Last week, The Daily Show discovered something that the producers of Pardon the Interruption knew years ago: CNN's Roland Martin is not afraid to rock the ascot. After two segments referencing the fancily festooned pundit, Martin responded to Stewart in kind (announcing that he may very well launch his own brand of neck wear); which ultimately lead to Stewart delivering his own "coup de grâce."...

While the Espn family of channels went into the 31st annual Sports Emmys with a leading 54 nominations, the cable nets had to settle for second place with seven wins, as paycaster HBO walked away with nine awards. HBO dominated the pre-taped end of the spectrum winning for best edited sports special ("24/7 Mayweather‑Marquez"), best edited series ("Hard Knocks: Training Camp With the Cincinnati Bengals") and best sports documentary ("Assault in the Ring") as well as a half dozen technical awards. The main Espn network won three Sports Emmys including both of the studio show awards for the daily "Pardon the Interruption" and the weekly "College Game Day" as well as studio analyst for Kirk...

You may not have heard of Kathryn Cressida, but you've probably heard her. Cressida, you see, is a voice-over artist. Though she used to act on camera, on such shows as General Hospital (TV) and Babylon 5 (TV), these days she makes her living talking into a microphone. She's the official voice of Espn's program Pardon the Interruption, provided the voice of Dee Dee on the animated series Dexter's Laboratory (TV), and speaks Na'vi in Avatar: The Game. That's also her as the "Black Widow Bride" beckoning in the Haunted Mansion attractions at Disney's theme parks. The list goes on and on. And her current gig starts today, as she'll be the voice/house announcer of Espn's blanket coverage of the NFL Draft, a three-day affair airing live, and with much of it in primetime. PopStar recently caught up with Cressida to talk about her unique profession and to preview her NFL Draft stint.

Back and forth banter between two sports colleagues got one of them in hot water. Espn has reportedly suspended the "Pardon the Interruption" host Tony Kornheiser for two weeks after he criticized morning "SportsCenter" host Hannah Storm's red school girl outfit. The suspension began Monday. Last week on his radio show, Kornheiser said in part Storm was "in a horrifying, horrifying outfit today. She's got on red go-go boots and a Catholic school plaid skirt ... way too short for somebody in her 40s or maybe early 50s by now. She's got on her typically very, very tight shirt. She looks like she has sausage casing wrapping around her upper body." Kornheiser did offer an apology on his...

For a cable network that is far and away the leader in sports television -- so much so that they've called themselves "The Worldwide Leader in Sports" for over 30 years now -- Espn seems to be quite the tight-assed organization.
Despite forging a reputation for opinionated sports coverage via TV, radio, and internet, they have issued an edict to their employees to not say anything critical about fellow ESPNers, under threat of suspension or other finger-wagging punishment. Bill Simmons has chafed the most under these regulations, but Tony Kornheiser isn't far behind.
So when Kornheiser opened his radio show last week by criticizing the semi-revealing outfit 'SportsCenter' anchor Hannah Storm wore that morning, you knew something was coming. Sure enough, Espn has suspended Kornheiser from 'Pardon the Interruption' for an indeterminate period of time, according to FanHouse.

Pardon the interruption of your regularly scheduled comics news, folks — but since today is new comics day, there's some info I want to send your way before you hit the shop.
If you're planning to pick up any of this week's Dark Horse Comics titles, be sure to check out the back cover for a little shout-out to your friendly neighborhood Splash Page editor, Rick Marshall (that's me). And I'm in pretty good company, too.
The "Hellboy" publisher devoted their monthly "Dark Horse Heroes" section to honoring me and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" comics writer Brad Meltzer (so any negative effect my photo has on the comic's value is balanced out by Meltzer's handsome mug). While I'm honored to be one step closer to actually being a superhero, this seems like a good time to thank all of you for reading Splash Page and let you know where else to...

One of television's biggest sports names long before people cared about the people who talked about sports on television has died.
George Michael, the sportscaster and longtime host of the nationally syndicated George Michael's Sports Machine, succumbed to a long battle with cancer on Thursday.
To call him ahead of his time would be an understatement. He basically invented the hyper clip style format of shows like Espn's SportsCenter, brought a great deal of personality to TV sports reporting and sportscasting and even inspired and mentored the likes of Pardon the Interruption's Tony Kornheiser and Michael Wilbon.

If you don't watch Espn's "Pardon the Interruption," I probably won't be able to explain this one to you. And if you do watch Espn's "Pardon the Interruption," this placement will be such a no-brainer -- too low, perhaps even -- that no explanation will be necessary. It boils down to this: Are you a fan of "The Daily Show"? If "Yes," continue on. If "No," you may not be reading the right Best of the Decade list. You know how if you're a "Daily Show" fan, when you see or read that something ridiculous happened in the world, you...
