In 1997, when Matt Damon and Ben Affleck wrote and starred in Gus Van Sant's "Good Will Hunting," it immediately propelled the pair onto the ineffable Hollywood A-list. Both of them had been acting for several years and had participated in a few notable studio pictures, but it was "Good Will Hunting" that pushed the two handsome young blokes onto the top of the heap. Their film was nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and it won Oscars for Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor (for Robin Williams). Ever since, both Affleck and Damon have remained above-the-title power players, appearing in a long list of both big-budget hits and ambitious indies.
Although, that's not to say that they both haven't had their share of stinkers. Affleck has starred in several notorious films in his career, including widely loathed films like "Gigli" and "Phantoms." Although Affleck was the bomb in "Phantoms,...

Osgood Perkins is still walking on his “Longlegs” high.
After the horror writer/director made history as Neon’s highest-grossing film (even surpassing Best Picture winner “Parasite” at the box office), Perkins unveiled the trailer to his follow-up Neon feature, “The Monkey.”
The film is based on Stephen King’s 1980 short story of the same name. Perkins wrote and directed the adaptation, which stars Theo James as twins Bill and Hal who discover their dad’s monkey toy in the attic. Of course, murder ensues.
Elijah Wood, Tatiana Maslany, Christian Convery, Colin O’Brien, Rohan Campbell, and Sarah Levy co-star.
“The Monkey” is produced by James Wan, Dave Caplan, Michael Clear, Chris Ferguson, and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones.
And while horror staples Wan and King are behind the film, Perkins told The Hollywood Reporter that “The Monkey” is his most comedic feature yet.

Helen Mirren as Grandmère in White Bird: A Wonder Story. Photo Credit: Larry Horricks. Courtesy of Lionsgate
Helen Mirren stars as a French Jewish grandmother who survived the Holocaust in the family drama White Bird. Concerned about her grandson Julian (Bryce Gheisar), a boy who is struggling to fit in at his new school after being expelled from his previous one for mistreatment of another student, Grandmere (Mirren) recounts her youthful experiences, a story of her past he has never heard, to teach Julian about the lasting power of kindness. In flashback, the grandmother’s story takes us to WWII France, to her old French village in the woods, where the kindness of a non-Jewish boy saved her life.
Also starring Gillian Anderson, White Bird is a moving, beautifully-shot and sensitively-told family drama from director Marc Forster, who also directed Neverland. The film is essentially a young adult tale, offering a coming-of-age,...

Say what you will about the Marvel Cinematic Universe's foray into television on Disney+, but you can't deny that the company knows how to craft a credit sequence. AI-fueled "Secret Invasion" screw-up aside, Marvel shows on Disney+ have signed off with some of the most creative, enjoyable end credits in recent memory, many of them a mini-adventure in their own right.
"Agatha All Along" is no exception. The new series may not be big on mid-credit scenes, but it uses its end credits to tell us exactly what it's about. The first episode ends with the Donovan song "Season of the Witch," which would be too on the nose if it weren't such an excellent, effective tune. It also shows the names of the series' cast and crew over a sort of witchy mood board, one that features witches ranging from creepy to adorable. There's historical information on display, complete...

Actress Lena Headey became known around the world as the hated Cersei Lannister in Game of Thrones. The infamous Queen was known for her political games, much like her father Tywin Lannister. Headey’s performance was consistently appreciated and she was even nominated for five Emmys and a Golden Globe.
On the personal front, however, Leadey seemed to have had a tough time. Despite earning a whopping $1.2 million salary in later seasons of the fantasy show, Headey claimed that she had less than $5 in her account during her divorce from ex-husband Peter Loughran.

Despite being banned from theaters at its initial 1974 release for its shocking violence, Tobe Hooper’s “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre” remains among the most influential horror films in history — and one that’s inspired countless remakes, sequels, spinoffs, and imitators.
Hooper, who would later direct the cult series “Salem’s Lot” (1979) and the ’80s phenomenon “Poltergeist” (1982), was a documentary cinematographer and an assistant film director at the University of Texas-Austin in the early ’70s. Co-written by Kim Henkel, “Texas Chain Saw” was remarkably only his sophomore feature following his 1969 psychedelic debut “Eggshells,” which Henkel also co-wrote and starred in.
In “Texas Chain Saw,” Sally (Marilyn Burns), her brother Franklin (Paul A. Partain), and their friends go on a doomed road trip in Texas County. Zachary Levi‘s Disney prince days are behind him, but he has some ideas of who could wear his crown.
The actor, who can be seen in Harold and the Purple Crayon on August 2, suggested who should play his character Flynn Rider in a potential live-action adaptation of the 2010 Disney animated movie Tangled as he admitted he’s “a little old” to slip back into the character.
“I mean, he’s already getting every other job but probably Timothée Chalamet?” Levi told Et. “Unfortunately I feel like I’m a little old — and that I don’t know all of the younger actors that could be that guy.”
A retelling of the Brothers Grimm’s Rapunzel, Mandy Moore voiced the princess, who blackmails wanted thief Flynn to escort her to the kingdom to see the floating lanterns in time for her 18th birthday.

This kids’ adventure story with a faux medievalist vibe has a cute conceit and some fun sequences but the inexperience of the cast and director shows
If you’ve ever tried to make a home movie with young children, you quickly come to appreciate how hard it is to get the little monsters to remember their lines and hit their marks, let alone give good performances. It’s an education in the difference between good and bad direction, the raw, primary-teacher skill in herding cats while also managing tone, quality control and all that storytelling stuff. Just try it for yourself and you’ll realise just how good a job directors such as Garth Jennings or Taika Waititi did with child-led films like Son of Rambow or Hunt for the Wilderpeople.
At the very least, this awareness will help you be a bit more forgiving of a film like Riddle of Fire.

Pied Piper of Hamelin, by Brothers Grimm, originally a Germanic folk tale, was either way supposed to be a harrowing story about honesty and integrity, but The Grimm Variations presents a darker rendition that resonates with us even in modern times. Episode 6 is a testament to the dual nature of traditional morality and strikes as a bold commentary on gender roles and freedom in an authoritarian system. The previous week, I had a conversation with an elderly gentleman who thought our generation lives in a utopian fantasy and is more into idealism than practicality. While I might disagree with what he had to say, for some strange reason, the story of Maria in this authoritarian village reminds me of my conversation with this man.

Actor Heath Ledger died tragically young in 2008 at the age of 28. The loss of the actor at such a young age not only was a huge blow to his family, friends and fans, but also left a huge hole in film history since we will never know what the actor would have accomplished in his later years.
It makes his death even more tragic in a strange way in that Ledger just seemed to be hitting his stride as an actor. His performance as The Joker in “The Dark Knight,” released shortly after his death, brought him critical raves and a posthumous Oscar as Best Supporting Actor.
Ledger began acting as a teenager on television in his native Australia. A series of successful roles there and in a few Australian films led to him being cast in the American teenage comedy “10 Things I Hate About You.” With his teen idol good looks,...

After desperately clinging to his dream project, The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, when the film got postponed by decades, Terry Gilliam shifted his focus to The Brothers Grimm. Making a winning combination from the start, Gilliam used his specialization in the bleak and strange to turn Heath Ledger and Matt Damon’s 2005 movie into the most beloved, dark fairy tales of all time.

Although The Brothers Grimm featured a stellar cast including Jonathan Pryce, Monica Bellucci, Lena Headey, and more, it was reported that Terry Gilliam initially wanted Johnny Depp instead of Matt Damon. Considering Gilliam’s preference towards Depp, even Damon was baffled when he was hired for the $105M movie, in place of the Pirates star.

Just when you thought you’d heard every “Harvey Weinstein is a monster” story, something new emerges.
The latest tale comes courtesy of Samantha Morton, who appeared on the Spotify’s “The Louis Theroux Podcast” and recounted how the one-time megaproducer once threatened that she “will not work again” after she declined starring in one of his movies — and in one instance, he made good on that promise.
Morton recalled on the podcast interview, published Monday, how she declined to star in a 2000 romantic comedy “About Adam,” which eventually starred Kate Hudson, Stuart Townsend and Frances O’Connor. Weinstein then threatened to ruin her life.
“I said, ‘I don’t like it.’ I think the film is really misogynistic, and I don’t want to be part of it,'” shes said. “The casting director came back with, ‘You don’t say no to Harvey.'” To which she said, “Well it’s not to him.

“I said, ‘I don’t like it.’ I think the film is really misogynistic, and I don’t want to be part of it,'” shes said. “The casting director came back with, ‘You don’t say no to Harvey.'” To which she said, “Well it’s not to him.

Samantha Morton appeared on a new episode of “The Louis Theroux Podcast” and recalled her tumultuous history with Harvey Weinstein, who is currently imprisoned as a convicted rapist. The “Minority Report” actor said Weinstein blackballed her on his films such as 2005’s “The Brothers Grimm” after she turned down one of his movies years prior. That film was the 2000 romantic comedy “About Adam,” starring Kate Hudson, Stuart Townsend and Frances O’Connor.
According to Morton, Weinstein was impressed with her performance in 1997’s “Under the Skin” and courted her to star in “About Adam.”
“I said, ‘I don’t like it,’” Morton said about turning down the offer. “‘I think the film is really misogynistic and I don’t want to be part of it.’ The casting director came back with, ‘You don’t say no to Harvey.’ Well it’s not to him. I just don’t want to do this film…...

What is light without darkness? This is what Tim Curry’s character of Darkness ponders in the 1985 film Legend. This fairy tale film from visionary director Ridley Scott would start filming in 1984 and even though the movie followed characters through a magical world, it would end up running into some very real problems. Scott was able to snatch up a new young actor just before he was about to become one of the biggest stars in the world and pit him against a well-respected actor known for taking chances in the parts he chose to play. Little did Scott know that making the film was only the first dragon he would have to slay. Getting it released was going to be even harder. Let’s find out how Legend became a fairy tale warning of making films in the studio system here on Wtf Happened To This Movie?

At the outset of Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey, an independent horror film that makes feral killers out of the cuddly animals from beloved children’s books, you hope for some entertaining grindhouse slasher. Two minutes in, you’re reduced to praying that it’s “so bad it’s good.” And by the time Pooh shoves a woman into a woodchipper, her legs still flailing as she’s butchered, you have to admit there’s no redeeming this hack job. Blood and Honey is a hundred-acre wasteland, a witless gory bore,...

Motion pictures, for better or worse, shape the way that we view history. They bring the past to life using realistic costumes, production design, and visual effects. They tell vivid stories about real-life figures and important events that shaped the world around us to this day, and which provide meaningful parallels to the lives we currently lead.
And yet, if the movies have taught us anything, it's that every single historical figure, at some point in their storied life, has also solved at least one murder mystery. Or at least they fought a mummy or something. The desire to tell tales of historical fiction is perfectly understandable, but our collective and very specific urge to transform biographies into pulpy fan fiction is a little weird, if you think about it.
Consider, if you will, Scott Cooper's "The Pale Blue Eye," which co-stars Harry Melling as a young Edgar Allan Poe,...

Peter Stormare and Marie Richardson in Food And Romance
Promoting a film is hard work. There’s either far too much to do, or it’s distressingly difficult to drum up interest. Although people making films for the love of it usually retain their passion, they are often low on energy when it comes to interviews. I have never met anybody in the industry quite as enthusiastic about his work as Swedish/American actor Peter Stormare, who is determined to squeeze as much as he can into the time we have for talking about Food And Romance, and who gives the strong impression that he’d be happy to keep talking about it all day if he didn’t have people trying to move him on to his next meeting. It’s easy to see how he has made such an impression on directors he has worked with in the past,...

Over the course of 15 years, Amy Adams’ zest for musical fairytales hasn’t faltered one bit. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for all of her co-stars. “Disenchanted,” the sequel to Disney’s beloved “Enchanted,” lands on Disney+ over a decade after the original first charmed audiences.
But hey, it’s still half the time it took for “Hocus Pocus 2” to be made. Whatever is in the water over at the Walt Disney Company, both casts have barely changed, and it feels like no time has passed on the magical ticking clock of aging. But was it worth the wait?
Adams gives it her wide-eyed all in “Disenchanted,” reprising her role of Andalasian princess Giselle, who stumbled into Manhattan through a botched portal and fell for divorce attorney and single father Robert (Patrick Dempsey) all those years ago. The sequel, also starring returning scene-stealers James Mardsen and Idina Menzel,...

The late great Heath Ledger is mostly remembered for his versatility onscreen. Never daring to shy away from a challenge, he jumped from genre to genre. Whether drama, fantasy, romantic comedy, he was always up for an adventure and, as a casual observer of his work, Ledger was one of those talents that seamlessly slipped into whatever role he took on. From "Brokeback Mountain," where he played the leading love interest to Jake Gyllenhaal's character, to playing a California surfer-type in "Lords of Dogtown," and most notably portraying one of the best Jokers in cinema history in Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight," he truly could do it all.
However, at the very beginning of his career when he was cast in the teen comedy, "10 Things I Hate About You," the future could have gone completely differently for Ledger. Cast as the contrarian rebellious bad boy Patrick Verona,...

Abel Ferrara on Willem Dafoe in Siberia and getting help from dreams: “We definitely did … Absolutely. Willem, too.”
In the third instalment of my conversation with Abel Ferrara from last summer, he opens up on positive practice, the role of Willem Dafoe’s family in Siberia, the huskies, the Magician Simon McBurney, fear tales, and the collected memory of the world.
Abel Ferrara with Anne-Katrin Titze on the Brothers Grimm and fear tales: “These kind of basic stories just ride across. It’s a collected memory of the world.”
Like a fairy-tale villain, Clint (Willem Dafoe) falls from the darkness of a cliff, confers with a Magician (Simon McBurney) about the inferiority of the black arts, and listens to what a fish in a pan has to say. “You stuck yourself at the end of the universe and you can’t see your selfishness, arrogance, and above all, ignorance,” Clint is being told.

Robert Eggers is ready to plunge us into a good-old Nordic revenge drama with the upcoming "The Northman," but while you wait, here's a 2006, black-and-white horror-ish short film shot by Eggers for your consideration.
One of the first shorts by Eggers on his IMDb resume, "Hansel & Gretel" is a 26-minute adaptation of the classic Brothers Grimm fairy tale, shot in eerie, German expressionist, retro horror style. This was filmed roughly 10 years before his acclaimed folk horror, "The Witch," which now emerges as a natural, refined, enhanced continuation of his unique vision of narratives entrenched in folklore after...

The big-scale Cinerama fantasy once thought unrecoverable is back — a terrific restoration brings us George Pal’s ode to fairy tales, filmed on Bavarian locations with an international cast. Laurence Harvey and Karl Boehm are the brothers that compiled the famed tales of princesses, witches, magic spells and fiery dragons. Their idealized biography is interspersed with three full fairy tale stories, about a magic cloak of invisibility, a cobbler’s helpful elves, and a pair of fearless dragon slayers. The show has dancing, beautiful locations, a sequence with Puppetoons and a terrific animated dragon. Featured stars are Claire Bloom, Walter Slezak, Barbara Eden, Oscar Homolka, Martita Hunt, Yvette Mimieux, Russ Tamblyn, Jim Backus, Terry-Thomas and Buddy Hackett; a long-form docu goes into fascinating detail explaining how Dave Strohmaier and Tom March accomplished the mind-boggling restoration.

Memories are filtered by opinion and worldview. How often is it allowed to wander into a new life? We all are accessing a sea of stories, as Salman Rushdie calls it, or are “dipping into the big cauldron of story,” as Maria Tatar said about the Brothers Grimm.
Julius, played by the marvelously versatile and uncanny Moritz von Treuenfels, works as a security guard in a museum. He gives tips to new hire Erik (Thomas Schubert) about the “horror” of having to stand by the video art installations, about tyranny and negotiation, and invites the newcomer from Lower Austria to join him and his friends, Jonas (Max Themak), Lizi (Ines Marie Westernströer), and Savo (Zejhun Demirov) on a sailing trip on his aristocratic family’s boat.
From the very start writer/director Jöns Jönsson has us pay attention to what is overheard. Be it a tour guide explaining a Mondrian.

Angelenos are still processing their grief about the closure of the ArcLight theaters. Pacific Theatres announced on Monday that it would close all of its locations, which include the ArcLight Hollywood and the historic Cinerama Dome.
Not as well known is that the theater chain also owns the Cinerama technology. The three-camera filming technique was introduced in 1952 in response to the rise of television, and was virtually obsolete by the time the Cinerama Dome opened on Sunset Boulevard in November 1963. The name lived on for a few years after that, in the form of single-camera 70 millimeter releases that were marketed as Cinerama films — including “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World,” the first film ever shown at the dome.
The dome itself was not outfitted with the three-camera projection technology until 2002, to coincide with the format’s 50th anniversary. The same year, David Strohmaier released the documentary “Cinerama Adventure,” detailing the history of the process.

It’s happening. It’s finally happening. What was once a particularly pervasive and aggressive Internet meme is now a reality. HBO Max’s list of new releases for March 2021 is highlighted by none other than the mythical Snyder cut.
The entity now known as Zach Snyder’s Justice League will premiere on March 18. While it was originally planned to be a four-part miniseries, this recut version of 2017’s ill-fated Justice League will in fact be a four-hour movie. But perhaps even four hours won’t be enough for fans who have been waiting years for just such an event.
