Apple TV+ has picked up Five Days at Memorial, a limited series from Oscar winner John Ridley and Emmy winner Carlton Cuse that chronicles events in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
The pickup of the new series, based on the acclaimed nonfiction book by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Sheri Fink, comes on the 15th anniversary of one of America’s worst natural disasters.
Five Days at Memorial, from ABC Signature, chronicles the first five days in a New Orleans hospital after Hurricane Katrina made landfall. When the floodwaters rose, the power failed and the heat climbed, exhausted caregivers were forced to make life-and-death decisions that haunted them for years to come.
Ultimately, 40 dead bodies were found in the hospital. The book explores how and why that happened. On the surface, it is a disaster thriller, but at its core is an examination of difficult moral and ethical decision-making in a time of great crisis.

John Ridley and Carlton Cuse are set to adapt Sheri Fink’s novel “Five Days at Memorial” for Apple as a limited series, Variety has learned.
The book chronicles the first five days in a New Orleans, LA, hospital after Hurricane Katrina made landfall. When the floodwaters rose, the power failed, and the heat climbed, exhausted caregivers were forced to make life-and-death decisions that haunted them for years to come.
Ridley and Cuse will co-write the series in addition to serving as executive producers and co-showrunners. Fink will produce, with Ridley attached to direct as well. ABC Signature, where Ridley and Cuse are both under overall deals, will produce.
Ridley won the Academy Award for best adapted screenplay in 2014 for “12 Years a Slave.” He also created the Showtime limited series “Guerrilla” and the Emmy-winning ABC series “American Crime.” He is also attached to write, direct, and executive produce an untitled musical drama at Showtime.

A version of this interview with John Ridley first appeared in the Limited Series & Movies issue of TheWrap’s Emmy magazine. John Ridley has been a leading voice in television for decades, earning two nominations in 2015 (and another the following year) for his ABC limited series “American Crime.” When the cultural and political landscape began to change in the wake of the killing of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer last month, we figured it was time to check back in with Ridley, whose other work includes his Oscar-winning screenplay for “12 Years a Slave,” the series “Guerrilla,” the documentary “Let It Fall” and an annual Social Justice Summit at No Studios, his arts production and studio complex in his hometown of Milwakuee. I went back and I looked at the conversation that we had about “American Crime” in 2015. It was a show in which police violence against people...

Next-gen gaming’s biggest open secret has finally been revealed. June’s PlayStation 5 showcase brought us our first look at Horizon Forbidden West.
Members of the Guerrilla Games team have confirmed that the game’s title is indeed a reference to protagonist Aloy’s journey into the West. As such, this will definitely be a sequel to 2017’s Horizon Zero Dawn that seems to pick up right about where the last major game (and its Dlc) in the series left off.
Sony said that “Horizon Forbidden West continues Aloy’s story as she moves west to a far-future America to brave a majestic, but dangerous frontier where she’ll face awe-inspiring machines and mysterious new threats.”
To that end, the game’s trailer suggests that this journey into the West will reveal some fascinating new landscapes, characters, and cultures that we didn’t get a glimpse of the first time around.

Exclusive: Writer-director John Ridley has been writing and directing film and TV projects about racial conflict his whole career. And despite winning the Oscar for scripting 12 Years a Slave, he has always found it a tough sell, the idea of forcing people to confront their own feelings about race and prejudice. He is in an unusual place in the aftermath of the George Floyd murder that prompted protests in major cities across the country. Right after writing a brief op-ed in the Los Angeles Times suggesting it wasn’t Ok for HBO Max to continue airing the cinematic classic Gone With The Wind without a qualifier that it wrongly celebrates the South and diminishes the horrors of slavery, WarnerMedia announced it would pull the film until it can provide some historical context for viewers. And Warner Bros just scrapped a Grand Rex theater showing in Paris to commemorate the...

Vgc is reporting that multiple sources have informed them that Sie and Guerrilla Games are planning on turning Horizon Zero Dawn into a trilogy starting with the release of Horizon Zero Dawn 2 for the PlayStation 5.
The report suggests that Guerrilla had ambitions to tell Horizon Zero Dawn as a trilogy story early on in the development process of the original game, but that plan didn’t become formal until it was clear to everybody involved that the first game would be a success.
As it stands, it seems that developer Guerrilla Games originally intended to develop Horizon Zero Dawn 2 for the PlayStation 4. However, the report suggests that the development of that sequel has now moved to the PlayStation 5. While the current console timeline simply supports such a transition, it also sounds like Guerrilla’s ambitions for that sequel may have necessitated a move to more powerful hardware.

Anurag Kashyap’s name (No Smoking, DevD) has become synonymous with new age Indian cinema, which pushes boundaries and offers an alternative to the mainstream commercial offerings from Bollywood which many have become accustomed to. Gangs of Wasseypur (Gow), fresh from its critical reception at Cannes Film Festival, is part one of a self-styled almost 6 hour epic mafia film, set in the hinterlands of northern India. The central concept of the film is revenge, coupled with the rise of warring clans. It is similar to the revenge Leonardo Dicaprio sought from Daniel Day Lewis in Scorsese’s Gangs of New York, or Amitabh Bachchan fought for in Mukul Anand’s Agneepath. In Gow this revenge is laid out very early in the film by a young Manoj Bajpai, in the name of his father’s death (also played by Manoj Bajpai) and will clearly culminate in part 2 of the film.

Fuglsig was originally on board to direct, but stepped down. The film is currently in search of his replacement. If the deal works out, Schwarzenegger will play an American real estate tycoon living in Brazil who is kidnapped and held for ransom. As he frantically searches for a way out of his armored-truck prison cell hidden in a Sao Paolo landfill, a detective specializing in kidnap and ransom cases works to find him.

Contagion, an all-star thriller about the race to halt a deadly virus, marks Matt Damon’s sixth collaboration with prolific filmmaker Steven Soderbergh — Che: Part Two, the three Ocean’s capers and The Informant! were the others. Repeat performances with distinctive directors has been a hallmark of the actor’s career. They’ve ranged across the director spectrum from scruffy Kevin Smith (Chasing Amy, Jersey Girl, Dogma) to classicist Clint Eastwood (Invictus, Hereafter) to indie specialist Gus Van Sant (Gerry, Finding Forrester and Good Will Hunting, for which Damon won a screenwriting Oscar) and politically charged Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Supremacy and Ultimatum, Green Zone).
The relationship with the brainy, unpredictable Soderbergh, however, seems like a pretty special one. Damon explains how the director piqued his interest in the Contagion project, with its echoes of Sars and avian flu (but so much worse).

Steven Soderbergh is directing the second unit of The Hunger Games, The Playlist reports. Recently the Contagion director has been seen on the set of the feature adaptation of the young adult novel by Gary Ross. Production designer, Eddie Mils tweeted, “Soderbergh in the house this weekend!!! very exciting!” Another tweet came from electrician Chrys Blackstone, who posted, “Holy shit! Just found out that Steven Soderbergh is coming to the #hungergames to direct 2nd Unit. I am so excited this is getting good!”
This may sound odd to some, but apparently Ross and Soderbergh have been friends for years. Soderbergh produced Pleasantville, while Ross has often taken a look at Soderbergh’s scripts. Phil Messina, a production designer on Hunger Games who has also worked on Soderbergh’s Erin Brockovich, Traffic, Solaris, The Good German, Che: Part Two and the ‘Ocean’s’ trilogy. Playlist reports that Ross merely had to assk Soderbergh to come aboard.

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are stirring up some good will over at Warner Bros.
The actors, longtime friends who won the original screenplay Oscar for "Good Will Hunting" in 1997, are negotiating to close a first-look producing deal at WB. Details are yet unknown on the new company's name or the length of the agreement, but the pact is likely to close within days.
Damon has worked with Warner Bros. often in recent years, starring in "Invictus," "The Informant!," "The Departed," "Syriana" and the "Ocean's" trilogy for the studio over the last decade. Affleck co-wrote, directed and stars in his latest film, "The Town," for WB, which is releasing the crime thriller in September.
The two actors created and ran LivePlanet, which had a deal at Disney until 2007, a decade ago with Chris Moore and Sean Bailey, Disney's new production chief. But it's unclear whether Affleck and Damon will try...

It's been a long time coming, but Steven Soderbergh's two-part biopic about Argentine-Cuban revolutionary Che Guevara will finally get the full DVD and Blu-ray release that it deserves this coming January. Apparently they had hoped to have it ready for December, but Soderbergh needed extra time to reconstruct deleted scenes and prepare some of the supplementary material. In the words of Criterion president Peter Becker, the delay was "a trade we will always make, even if it means we don't get the benefit of sales in the holiday season, and we think that's the kind of decision our collectors would want us to make". Kudos to Criterion for that. The extras on this release will include the following: High-definition digital transfers of Che: Part One and Che: Part Two, supervised and approved by director Steven Soderbergh, with DTS-hd Master Audio soundtrack on the Blu-ray edition Audio commentaries on both films,...

Matt Damon’s face says it all. The wonderment coming from this movie is incredible. It looks downright hilarious, and, believe it or not, could be Soderbergh’s funniest movie to date. I guess that’s not saying a whole lot when you consider the guy’s previous funniest movie was ‘Che: Part Two.’
Well, today, we have two posters to show you and a still from the movie. The first poster is the newest of these. The still and the other poster have been around for a few months, but we haven’t run them yet.
Check ‘em out:
You gotta wonder, though. Both posters claim ‘The Informant’ comes out in September, but everything else claims the movie’s release date is October 9th. These could be early prints that are just now coming out, so the finalized poster that hits theater lobbies will probably be slightly altered.

Havana -- Hollywood came to Havana on Thursday as Cuban writers and artists gave an award to Benicio del Toro, star of the 2008 movie "Che," in a ceremony attended by fellow actors Bill Murray, Robert Duvall and James Caan.
Murray stole the show when he improvised a version of the song "As Time Goes By," then jokingly passed around a hat, asking for money.
Their presence lent a bit of Hollywood glitz to warming U.S.-Cuba relations, and may have been the precursor for the making of a film in Cuba.
A spokesman for the group said del Toro was in town for the award, but that Murray, Duvall and Caan were working on a "research project."
When asked if he and his pals might make a movie on the communist-led island, del Toro told reporters: "That depends on the governments, on the American government."

The Martin Luther King Jr. weekend is proving bountiful for at least one shopping-mall misfit.
Sony's PG-rated comedy "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" -- starring Kevin James ("I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry") as a hapless security guard-turned-hero -- rung up an impressive $33.8 million in estimated opening grosses through Sunday. That put the Happy Madison production firmly atop the domestic boxoffice headed into the Monday holiday.
"It's a huge number, there's no doubt about it," Sony distribution president Rory Bruer said.
Clint Eastwood's "Gran Torino" from Warner Bros. was pacing second over its second weekend of wide release, following several sessions in limited distribution. Pumping another $22.2 million it its tank this weekend, "Torino" now hauls a $73.2 million cume.
The frame's three other wide openers also loaded up on three-day coin.
Lionsgate's 3-D horror film "My Bloody Valentine" registered $21.9 million in third from a mix of extra-dimensional and conventional playdates.

If you haven't already noticed, I'm a big admirer of great poster designs. Unfortunately we all too often see a lot of terrible posters over the year. So when one pops up that breaks the norm and looks fantastic, I'm always excited to share it. And thankfully, Steven Soderbergh's Che has been gaining momentum anyway due to its expansion into 9 more cities over the next few weeks. Thanks to Empire we've got our first look at the UK quad poster for Che: Part Two. The reason why I love this poster so much is because they took a considerably old and stale photo and gave it new life and new energy on a fantastic poster. For those interested, the back-to-back "Roadshow Edition" of Che will be expanding to theaters in Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington DC starting on January 16th. Additionally, beginning on...

Revolutionaries, robots, mutants... Monsters, aliens, in-betweeny human-aliens... From January to December and, umm, a little bit beyond... All the movies you'll be talking about in the final year of the noughties... Che: The Argentine/The Guerrilla (Director: Steven Soderbergh, Eta: Jan/Feb) What is it? Note: I wanted to let you know you can also follow my predictions over at the Los Angeles Times in their Buzzmeter section as I join a large crew of Oscar prognosticators in predicting this year's Oscar nominees. Now, to the predictions... Well, I hope you all had a Happy Holidays and were able to get through the snow and into the theaters, at least here in the States I believe there was a point that 50% of the country was covered in snow, which I am sure made it tough for some to justify driving to the cinema. Either way, all of the major contenders have hit theaters at this point with the December 31 release of Defiance and Good marking the final installments for 2008, but neither of them are vying too hard for any of the top categories outside of what I hope will be a score nomination for James Newton Howard...

Hollywood first took notice of the classically beautiful and talented Julia Ormond when she appeared opposite Brad Pitt in a highly regarded supporting role in Legends of the Fall. The British actress who studied at Webber-Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art was recently seen in David Lynch’s film “Inland Empire,” as well as “Kit Kittredge: An American Girl: with Abigail Breslin. She can currently be seen in Steven Soderbergh’s “Che” with Benicio Del Toro and stars in the upcoming “Surveillance” alongside Bill Pullman. MoviesOnline sat down...

I'm still very proud to say that I sat through all 262 minutes of Steven Soderbergh's Che epic back at the Toronto Film Festival. Even if you hate Che Guevara or even if you don't like Steven Soderbergh, it's worth the time and money to sit through such a beautifully made cinematic epic. IFC Films debuted Che publicly in theaters on December 12th a week back to not only qualify for Oscar consideration, but to give viewers a chance to experience Soderbergh's two films back-to-back just as I did. Well apparently the film has been so successful, including selling out shows over the weekend, that IFC is letting it run for another two weeks. Che opened in two theaters last weekend: Clearview's Ziegfeld in New York City and The Landmark in Los Angeles. IFC's plan was to run it for only one week as a "roadshow" double feature before pulling...
