Billed as the Aussie version of Yellowstone, the six-part series follows the generational clashes that threaten to tear the Lawson family apart when Marianne Station is left without a clear successor. Sensing this once-great dynasty is in decline, the outback’s most powerful factions — rival cattle barons, desert gangsters, Indigenous elders and billionaire miners — move in for the kill. With billions of dollars at stake, everyone wants a piece of the pie.

During the era of network television, shows used to have a shelf-life of at least 10 seasons. Some TV series that were made before the Ott boom continue to enjoy the freedom to adapt and improve over the course of many years, but the same can’t be said about made-for-ott shows, especially the ones on Netflix. Yes, “guilty pleasure content” like Emily in Paris and Elite has benefited from the hate-watch syndrome. However, a lot of really good shows have been unceremoniously axed by the streaming platform before they could find their audience. The one cancellation that hurt viewers the most was Mindhunter. Now, ever since its termination, fans have been clamoring for David Fincher, Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany, Anna Torv, and the rest of the team to come together for at least one more season. Like the monkey’s paw curling effect, they did return to Netflix, but just via different projects.

The new Todd Phillips film is about a pair of Jokers and this week’s film quiz focuses on other movie duos.
They say it takes two to tango, but no one ever says it takes two to Tango And Cash. Why would they? Stupid thing to say. Anyway, October’s first big release Joker: Folie à Deux sees Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker joined by Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn for an all-singing, all-dancing sequel – just don’t call it a musical! And as Warner Bros also announced the animated Robin movie Dynamic Duo earlier this week, we’re quizzing for two.
As always, there are three rounds and 30 questions in total. Once you’ve completed today’s film quiz, you’ll find a link to a separate post with the correct answers at the bottom of this post. This is just for fun, but please let us know how...

After two movies and two seasons of a TV series, Outback murderer Mick Taylor will return in Wolf Creek: Legacy, recently announced as both the third installment and something of a reboot of Greg McLean’s horror franchise. But have no fear, John Jarratt is back as Mick Taylor.
What can we expect from Wolf Creek: Legacy? Speaking with David Clair-Bennett for his YouTube channel this week, John Jarratt teased a tone more in line with the original Wolf Creek.
“It’s dark and creepy again,” Jarratt teases. “It’s more like the first one. With the second one, we had a bit of fun. Cracked a few jokes. For this one, the dark creepy thing is the ultimate when it comes to playing Mick. Just creeping up and being scary.”
Jarratt adds, speaking about Mick Taylor, “He never runs, never yells, never dies.”

Wolf Creek: Legacy, a reboot of the infamous Australian horror, is set to film in early 2025. More on the film here.
2005’s Wolf Creek remains one of the most vicious horror films of the 2000s. Taking inspiration from the fact that hundreds of people go missing in Australia every year, the film starred John Jarratt as serial killer Mick Taylor, who preyed on unsuspecting hikers in the Australian Outback. The film spawned a sequel, Wolf Creek 2, but the less we say about that one, the better.
Deadline now reports that Wolf Creek is due for a reboot. Wolf Creek: Legacy is heading into production in early 2025 and original director Greg Mclean is producing. The film will be directed by Sean Lahiff, who edited Wolf Creek 2.
Jarratt will also reprise his role as Taylor and this time, it’s Americans who find themselves at the mercy of the brutal serial killer,...

It's difficult to define what makes a film "underrated," but in the landscape of slasher movies, the Australian franchise "Wolf Creek" is my go-to answer for "most underrated." It does seem strange to give the series that distinction considering there are two "Wolf Creek" feature films, a two-season television continuation series, two novels, and a rumored third film currently in development, but the average movie fan has no idea what "Wolf Creek" is or why John Jarratt's Mick Taylor is one of the scariest killers out there. And yet, the series has continued on and expanded in the ways that it has because it's genuinely terrifying.
Writer/director Greg McLean first started on the script for "Wolf Creek" back in the late '90s, but knew something was missing. His first take was a far more traditional slasher, but it was after seeing media of an Australian serial killer...

Writer/Director Kiah Roache-Turner wears his influences on his sleeves in the throwback creature feature Sting. A mysterious object from outer space crashes into a New York apartment amidst a raging blizzard, where the mysterious spider inside it is discovered by a girl named Charlotte. Charlotte dubs her new pet Sting, unaware that it’s not from Earth and comes with an insatiable appetite for human flesh. As the spider’s reign of terror increases, so does Roache-Turner’s commitment to capturing the mayhem through stunning practical creature effects, which makes this film worth the price of admission.
It’s not just the spider’s pet name, derived from The Hobbit, or the effects by the 5-time Academy Award® Winner Wētā Workshop, led by Creative Director Richard Taylor, that calls the work of Peter Jackson to mind here. It’s also the film’s sense of humor, from the opening...

It never gets easier to look up the horrors of what real life humans are willing to perpetrate but some of them are harder than others. Looking into the purported Scottish myth that inspired The Hills Have Eyes for example is a whole heck of a lot easier to do than find out the absolutely abysmal crimes that were committed against a young girl in The Girl Next Door. Sadly, today’s movie The Snowtown Murders, a.k.a. Snowtown (watch it Here), is a lot closer to the sickening facts that happened to The Girl Next Door. While Australia already got our notorious spotlight shined on the fictional Mick Taylor who was a composite of two backpack killers, today we will look at the man who is known as the country’s worst serial killer and unpack what he did and who with. The movie is hard to watch...

Lucy Fry (the Wolf Creek TV series), Madeline Brewer (The Handmaid’s Tale), Sheryl Lee (Twin Peaks), and comedian Matt Rife (Natural Selection) lead the cast of the psychological horror film I Live Here Now, which recently made its way through production with first-time feature director Julie Pacino at the helm. Utopia represents the worldwide rights to the project, and Screen Daily reports that they’ll be launching distribution sales at the European Film Market, which will be held during the 74th Berlin International Film Festival later this month.
I Live Here Now sees Fry taking on the role of a woman who finds herself trapped in a remote hotel where the violent echoes of her past come alive, blurring the lines between her darkest nightmares and the waking world.
In addition to Wolf Creek, Fry’s credits include Vampire Academy, Mr. Church, 11.22.63, The Darkness, Bright, Night Teeth, She’s Missing,...

While “based on a true story” is typically a ploy to lure in audiences, the basis of the 2007 movie Primeval does, in fact, exist. Or at least he did, at one point. The whereabouts of what many deem the “world’s most prolific killer” — a decades-old Nile crocodile named Gustave who allegedly claimed somewhere between 200 and 300 human lives — are murky nowadays. Some say Burundi’s most infamous reptile is long gone, and others demand proof of his passing. Regardless, Gustave’s notoriety lives on in this panned Hollywood creature-feature with a severe identity crisis.
Back then, it was understandable to have a cursory look at the original ad campaign for Primeval and not realize the movie is about a crocodile. An intentionally vague trailer led to complaints of deception from viewers; they were expecting a movie about a human serial killer. Imagine their surprise once they watched Primeval, which, for obvious reasons,...

Lily Sullivan earned a lot of horror-loving fans with her performance in last year’s Evil Dead Rise, writer/director Lee Cronin’s addition to the Sam Raimi-created Evil Dead franchise. Those horror-loving fans are going to have a new Sullivan film to check out soon, when Well Go USA gives a theatrical and digital release to Monolith on February 16th – and with just a month to go before that date arrives, a trailer for the film has arrived online. One of the biggest and some would say overused tropes in horror movies is the killer stalking people in an outdoor setting. The main series for this is, of course, the Friday the 13th series but we have nearly countless other examples to pull from. Sometimes, like today’s entry, or The Burning, these stories and movies can be based on true events and make it even more frightening. Unlike The Burning, which is based on an urban legend with the true story being far from fact, Wolf Creek (watch it Here) had an original script that was tweaked to be based on the real life killers Ivan Milat and Bradley John Murdoch...

Similar to France’s New Extremity, Australia experienced its own significant genre resurgence in the 2000s. Most agree the Land Down Under’s golden days of filmmaking began in the ’70s and then drew to a close around the late ‘80s. This period, better known as the Australian New Wave, soared to new heights after the government issued substantial support for the arts. After a steep decline in the ‘90s, though, homegrown horror made a slow but noticeable comeback in the early 21st century. And no other movie from that era is more responsible for bringing Australia back into the conversation than 2005’s bleak and stylish Wolf Creek.
It wouldn’t be a mid-2000s horror movie without the practically mandatory and hyperbolic “based on true events” promotion. In this case, though, Wolf Creek is indeed inspired by a ripped-from-the-headlines true crime. Several, in fact. Ivan Milat, who died in...

Of course, if they’d seen Slashlorette Party they might have reservations about combing the bride and groom’s weekends. Josephine Langford is most well known for playing college student Tessa Young in the "After" movies. The franchise, which is inspired by Anna Todd's best-selling book series of the same name, chronicles Tessa's tumultuous relationship with Hardin Scott (Hero Fiennes Tiffin) - a mysterious bad boy with a dark past. The first film, which premiered in 2019, catapulted Langford to fame. Now, years later, Langford has officially said goodbye to Tessa following the release of the final "After" installment "After Everything," which premiered on Sept. 13.
So what's next for Langford? The actress is set to star in the upcoming romantic comedy "The Other Zoey." The film centers around a college student named Zoey, who enters into a fake relationship after a cute guy with amnesia mistakes her for his real girlfriend. The movie will be released in select theaters on Oct. 20 before becoming available on-demand on Nov. 10.

If there’s a theme cutting across Kitty Green’s work, it’s the dangers that lurk in everyday society for young, idealistic women. Whether using the tools of re-enactment in the hybrid documentary Casting JonBenet or a process-focused minimalism in the #MeToo workplace drama The Assistant, she never approaches the shared subject in the same way.
With The Royal Hotel, Green further expands her toolkit by drawing on the conventions of genre filmmaking. She doesn’t overtly tip her hand as to what kind of situation Hanna (Julia Garner) and Liv (Jessica Henwick) walk into when they gain employment at the titular bar. As two broke Americans in desperate need of cash on a work-tourism trip in Australia, they have little choice but to take a gig bartending at the lone watering hole in a desolate mining town.
The film unnervingly aligns our experience with that of Hanna and Liv.

For all you urbanites who occasionally daydream about leaving behind the humdrum of traffic jams, incessant honking, and neon lights for some rustic charm and fresh air, think again. The cinematic world has a peculiar way of reminding us that the serene countryside might just be hiding some unspeakable terrors.
More and more of us are drawn to the idea of “getting back to nature,”; camping trips, nature walks, desolate desert drives, or even ill-advised witch hunts in the woods without a map. But, if horror films have taught us anything, it’s that safety should always come before seclusion.
Get lost with us in the cinematic woods of rural horror movies, where the only thing scarcer than cell service is a way out.

Antenna provides some of the best market research in the streaming and TV industry. The firm has been hard at work in September, releasing its new “State of Subscriptions” report with an emphasis on specialized streaming platforms that target smaller audiences such as AMC+, BET+, Britbox, and others.

The data shows that primarily, users access these streamers through third-party platforms like Prime Video Channels. Antenna’s numbers demonstrate that 66% of all subscriptions to these streaming services have come through Prime Video Channels alone in 2023, and only 8% of customers go to the streamer directly to sign up. For comparison, only 9% of premium subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) subscriptions like Paramount+ have come through Prime Video Channels this year.

Be it the feeling of atmospheric isolation, reconnecting with primal instincts, or the pervasive insignificance of human existence, something about venturing into the wilderness clicks so very well with thriller narratives that survival suspense tales have become a genre in themselves. Away from urban security, the tales plunge viewers into a world of uncertainty where unbound human nature shows its true face, and before we know it, the setting becomes the intangible antagonist the leads need to conquer. The recently released survival thriller River Wild, which is a remake of the much superior original one, although not the best venture the subgenre has to offer, follows the basic tenets of it in showcasing the perilous misadventure of a group of campers.
We would like to recommend some other great survival thrillers that you can enjoy if River Wild has piqued your interest in the subgenre. A couple of these might...

The Blair Witch Project, Wolf Creek, V/H/S, The House that October Built, Creep, Troll Hunter, Paranormal Activity… Like all good found footage films, Cloverfield (watch it Here) seemed to come out of left field, suddenly going from having never been heard of to having the biggest buzz around it and making about 7 times its budget at the box office. So, how did that happen? What is it that took this one and elevated it beyond some of the older titles in the sub-genre. How did this one catch the attention of the public and make so much money it got two sequels to date?
How did Cloverfield become a hit, what set it apart from the rest?...

Emphasizing extreme violence, brutality, and relentless torture and suffering from its victims at the expense of traditional suspense and chills, the scene had a massive amount of mainstream appeal thanks to films like “Saw,” “Hostel,” “Wolf Creek,” and “The Collector” among others bringing about massive financial gain and audience acceptance which brought about numerous attempts throughout the world. After the Japanese effort “Grotesque” started the Asian countries jumping on the trend, Taiwanese director Kevin Ko tackled the genre with his debut feature “Invitation Only” which is now available on physical media from Unearthed Films.
