Netflix’s rom-com series Nobody Wants This attracted more viewing in its second week, moving up one spot to second overall in Nielsen’s weekly streaming charts.

The series starring Kristen Bell and Adam Brody drew 1.21 billion minutes of watch time for the week of Sept. 30-Oct. 6, a 16 percent improvement on its premiere week. It also moved up one spot in the overall rankings, as the prior week’s second-place title, Inside Out 2, dropped by 50 percent to a still strong 908 million minutes of viewing on Disney+.

Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story finished first overall for the third consecutive week with 1.41 billion minutes of viewing, down about 41 percent week to week. Netflix’s dating show Love Is Blind returned to the charts with a billion-minute week; its seventh season premiered on Oct. 2.

Netflix’s Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story led Nielsen’s streaming charts for a second straight week — and grew substantially from its debut.

The Ryan Murphy-produced series was the top title for the week of Sept. 23-29 with just under 2.4 billion minutes of viewing time. That’s a 40 percent improvement on the drama’s opening week (it premiered Sept. 19), which had 1.72 billion minutes of watch time, and the highest total for any streaming series in Nielsen’s rankings since Bridgerton hit 2.47 billion minutes in June.

Two other Netflix series had strong opening weeks: Rom-com Nobody Wants This premiered to 1.04 billion minutes of viewing, and the docuseries Mr. McMahon, about World Wrestling Entertainment impresario Vince McMahon, had 908 million minutes.

In the film, a scientist (Duhamel) steals an experiment and hides off the grid in Europe to prevent it from becoming weaponized. His former research partner (Kinnear), along with an extraction team, is sent in to find him and locate the missing experiment.

Stormare plays Belcor, the evil corporate genius who sends Kinnear’s character and his team of mercenaries led by Mia (played by Asseraf) and Marcus (played by Russert) after Duhamel’s character who is hiding off the grid.

In 2008, a comedy about the behind-the-scenes of the TV industry, Back To You, co-created/executive produced by Steve Levitan, was canceled by Fox, the broadcast network then-aligned with Levitan’s longtime studio home, 20th Television. Shortly thereafter, another comedy co-created/executive produced by Levitan, Modern Family, was sold to a rival network, ABC, where it went to series and became an instant hit.

In 2023, a comedy about the behind-the-scenes of the TV industry, Reboot, created by Levitan, was canceled by Hulu, the streamer aligned with his studio 20th TV. Shortly thereafter, another comedy, Erin Foster’s Nobody Wants This, which Levitan executive produces, sold to a rival streamer, Netflix, where it went to series and became an instant hit.

In both cases, Levitan had been vocal in his displeasure over the cancellations, directing it at the network/platform: More bluntly about Back To You, “I have sworn off the Fox network.

Netflix continues to draw strong viewership with content surrounding Lyle and Erik Menendez.

True crime documentary “The Menendez Brothers” was the the most-watched title on the streamer during the week of Oct. 6-12. Premiering on Oct. 7, it hit 22.7 million views in its first six days of availability.

The film benefitted from recently increased attention on the brothers, drummed up by real-life developments in their case as well as Ryan Murphy’s scripted series “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.” Having premiered on Sept. 19, the series is in its fourth week on the Netflix Top 10 and remains popular, landing at No. 3 with 8.7 million views.

The two TV titles to beat “Monsters” were Season 4 of “Outer Banks,” which debuted No. 1 with 15.5 million views in its first three days of availability, and “Nobody Wants This,” back at No. 2 with 9.6 million views after debuting there and then spending one week in the top position.

“The Menendez Brothers” documentary debuted as Netflix’s most-watched movie of the week in the aftermath of Ryan Murphy’s explosive TV dramatization of the case.

Alejandro Hartmann’s documentary, which is produced by Campfire Studios and features new interviews with the Menendez brothers and the prosecutors, scored the top spot on the English films list during the week of Oct. 7 with 22.7 million views. Viewership for “The Menendez Brothers” doc nearly doubled that of “The Predator,” which took second place with 12.9 million views, and more than doubled that of “Lonely Planet” as the Laura Dern and Liam Hemsworth-led romcom took the No. 3 slot with 11 million views.

The first part of season four, which launched on October 10, drew 15.5M views. It comes as fans of the show, which stars Chase Stokes, Madelyn Cline, Madison Bailey, Jonathan Daviss, Rudy Pankow, Carlacia Grant, and Drew Starkey, descended on Charleston, where the series is filmed to celebrate its premiere.

Part two of season four will launch on November 7.

Netflix’s limited series The Perfect Couple and its movie Rebel Ridge ranked first and second overall on Nielsen’s streaming charts for the week of Sept. 9-15, just as they did over the prior seven days. The Perfect Couple drew 1.97 billion minutes of viewing time (up a bit from 1.91 bilion), and Rebel Ridge grew to 1.28 billion minutes from 1.11 billion for its premiere week.

Also showing significant growth: Hulu’s unscripted show The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, which improved by 78 percent week to week and broke into the overall top 10 with 729 million minutes of viewing. Netflix’s “The Perfect Couple” has remained a powerhouse for the streamer, landing at No. 1 for a second week in a row on Nielsen’s overall top ten streaming ranker, for the week of Sept. 9 to Sept. 15, 2024. This reps the numbers for the show’s first full week of availability, in which it came close to the 2 billion minute viewing mark. According to Nielsen, in Week 2, “The Perfect Couple” saw its audience grow particularly in the younger 18-34 and 35-49 demos.

Netflix also held the No. 2 slot for a second week in a row with the original film “Rebel Ridge,” which posted 1.28 billion minutes viewed. a second week at #2 overall / #1 movie — and completing the short list of billion-minute titles for this interval — was the Netflix original movie Rebel Ridge with 1.280 billion minutes.

In a sense, Netflix really is the new Blockbuster Video (or Hollywood Video or whatever rental chain my fellow old people preferred to frequent). Once you marched past the rows stacked with endless copies of the latest release at your local Blockbuster, you could uncover films and TV shows that either flew under the radar or were deemed too scandalous for mainstream tastes. (Stumbling upon and being mildly traumatized by the grotesque cover artwork for horror B-movies was practically a rite of passage for folks of a certain age.) You don't get anywhere near the same range of choices on Netflix -- especially now that its library is increasingly composed of the service's originals -- but it does similarly allow certain older, somewhat forgotten titles to gain a new lease on life, however fleeting it may be.

The popular action drama has officially been renewed for its fourth season, way ahead of the series’ season three premiere set for 2025. The streamer reports season two, which debuted in December 2023, was the most-watched Prime Video series last year.

What do you get when you mix a pre-golden-age-of-tv network show with the power of Netflix? If "Suits" and its unmitigated streaming success in 2023 and 2024 are anything to go by, you get nothing short of a full-on TV renaissance. The legal drama saw an unprecedented surge in popularity when it hit the streamer, which had long since established itself as a place where forgotten movies could find new life. But "Suits" proved that canceled network shows could also flourish on the streamer, and now it's time for a new old series to take advantage of the Netflix effect.

That show is, of course, "Prison Break." Another Netflix original, Rebel Ridge, took second place with 1.1B viewing minutes. That film had a slightly younger audience that was split evenly among men and women.

Family Guy and Prison Break also notched over 1B minutes, and rounding out the Top 5 was Prime Video’s Rings of Power, which generated another billion minutes for the second consecutive week following the launch of Season 2.

The murder mystery limited series, which stars Nicole Kidman, Liev Schreiber and Dakota Fanning, accumulated 1.91 billion minutes of viewing for the week of Sept. 2-8 (it premiered on Sept. 5). That’s the fifth highest total for any original series premiere week on the streaming charts this year, behind Fool Me Once (3.04 billion minutes), Fallout (2.9 billion), Bridgerton (2.76 billion) and Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender (2.56 billion).

The Perfect Couple was one of five titles to record more than a billion minutes of viewing for the week. The others are Netflix’s movie Rebel Ridge (1.11 billion), Family Guy (1.06 billion), Prison Break (1.05 billion) — which had been the overall No. 1 for the previous four weeks — and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (1.02 billion), which was even with its season two premiere a week earlier.

Frances Neagley (Maria Sten) is getting her own show, as Amazon orders a full series to centre around the character from Reacher.

As entertaining as the Tom Cruise Jack Reacher films are, it’s Alan Ritchson’s take on the character (based on the novels by Lee Child) which garnered the most acclaim. It’s thus not surprising Amazon is expanding the Reacher universe, since it’s one of its most popular shows, having already notched up two seasons and a third run now on the way.

According to Deadline, Amazon has given a series order to a spin-off with the working title of Neagley, which will revolve around the character played by Maria Sten, who will reprise the role.

The synopsis reads as follows:

Frances Neagley is a private investigator in Chicago and former military colleague of Jack Reacher (Alan Ritchson) in the Army’s 110th Special Investigations Unit.

Ryan Murphy’s “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” was unsurprisingly the No. 1 title on Netflix during the Sept. 23-29 viewing window. The true crime project hit 19.5 million views its first full week of availability, up from the 12.3 million views it achieved in four days on last week’s chart.

It was reported last month that a popular side character from Prime Video’s Reacher was in the works to get her own spin-off. Now, Deadline is reporting that the Frances Neagley-focused series has officially been ordered at Amazon. The show, tentatively titled Neagley will star Maria Sten as the titular character. The character of Neagley is a corporate security professional and former military colleague of Jack Reacher (Alan Ritchson) in the Army’s 110th Special Investigations Unit. It is also being reported that Ritchson is set to appear in the spinoff as a guest star, reprising his role as Reacher.

Developed by “Reacher” creator Nick Santora and Nicholas Wootton, per the official logline the spinoff finds Neagley working as a private investigator in Chicago. But “when she learns that a beloved friend from her past has been killed in a suspicious accident, she becomes hell bent on justice. Using everything she’s learned from Jack Reacher and her time as a member of the 110 Special Investigators, Neagley puts herself on a dangerous path to uncover a menacing evil.”

Prime Video on Tuesday morning announced a series order for a spinoff of Reacher, one of the streamer’s beefiest hits, centered on Maria Sten’s Frances Neagley.

It’s official: Prime Video has given a series order to a Reacher spinoff, expanding the hit drama’s universe. It stars Maria Sten, reprising her fan favorite character from the mothership, Frances Neagley. Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios, made the announcement at the Prime Video Presents: Trailblazers event in London.

As Deadline revealed exclusively last month, the untitled project (aka Neagley), had been on fast track, nearing a green light.

The offshoot was created for television by Reacher executive producer and showrunner Nick Santora, who developed the mothership series based on Lee Child’s books, and Nicholas Wootton, with whom he previously worked on Prison Break. The duo will executive produce and co-showrun the spinoff, produced by Amazon MGM Studios, Skydance Television and CBS Studios.

The new hot show on the block this week is The Penguin, a spinoff of The Batman starring a heavily made-up Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobb, Batman's nemesis in the making. Critics, including us, love the gritty, Sopranos-esque crime drama, and it looks like viewers are right there with us. Per Variety, HBO says that The Penguin nabbed 5.3 million viewers for its premiere episode within four days of its release across both HBO and Max. That's better than the season 4 premiere of Succession and the season 2 premiere of The White Lotus, two other top-tier HBO dramas, although below the take for the season 4 premiere of True Detective: Night Country. And The Penguin got the best numbers for a new series on Max since 2022's The Last of Us.

If you look back on certain shows with a measured perspective, you'll realize that they aren't quite as good as you remember. However, in some cases, this change in perceived quality — shaped by hindsight and nostalgia — ceases to matter, as long as the show aims to entertain. "Prison Break," for instance, starts with a solid premise, where an innocent man's imminent death sentence triggers an elaborate escape plan spearheaded by his brother, introducing appropriately thrilling stakes within a contained narrative arc. However, the series' entertainment quotient plummets after the third season, its plot hinging on mind-numbingly convoluted developments that start feeling messy in all the wrong ways. However, given how great the first two seasons are, "Prison Break" is still remembered fondly, its cultural impact being solely shaped by those heart-thumping initial episodes.

Like the first season, the second season also received a similar critical response. While the visuals and set designs were praised, the writing and pacing were major issues for many critics. According to Nielsen, the series couldn’t even break into the top spot for the last week of August when the series premiered its first three episodes. Interestingly, the top spot went to another TV series that aired its last episode in 2017—Prison Break.

“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” debuted its second season as Nielsen’s No. 2 most-watched streaming program in the last week of August.

The Prime Video series, which released the first three episodes of Season 2 on Thursday, Aug. 29, logged 1.015 billion minutes viewed across its 11 existing episodes during the interval of Aug. 26-Sept. 1, according to Nielsen. “The Rings of Power” stood as the most-watched original streaming show during the week, but was outpaced on the overall streaming list by “Prison Break.”

The second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power opened to big viewing numbers in the United States — just not as big as its first season.

The Prime Video series amassed 1.02 billion minutes of viewing in the United States for the week of Aug. 26-Sept. 1, good for first place among original series and second among all titles in Nielsen’s streaming rankings. Season two premiered on Aug. 29 with three episodes, and Nielsen says about 70 percent of the show’s weekly total was for those three, with the remainder devoted to season one. Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power returned to the Nielsen streaming charts in the last week of August following the debut of Season 2.

The series drew just over 1B minutes viewed from August 26 to September 1, with three new episodes launching on August 29, putting it at No. 2 on the overall list. Nielsen doesn’t separate titles by season, but the company did say that about 70% of the viewing for this interval came from the new episodes.

That’s a decline from Season 1’s debut week, when the series racked up more than 1.2B minutes viewed across just two episodes — as opposed to the 11 that became available during this interval. Those two episodes also premiered mid week, meaning that Season 1 had just four days to rack up that total across those two episodes.

The premiere-week viewership numbers for Netflix’s “Monsters” weren’t particularly monstrous. They’re also not… “Monster”-ous.

In its first four days of availability, Ryan Murphy’s “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” amassed 12.3 million views, according to Netflix. Within its first five days, Season 1 — the “Monster: Jeffrey Dahmer” season — was streamed for a total of 196.2 million hours.

These are, of course, two different metrics — Netflix shifted from reporting viewership hours to views sometime between these two seasons of TV. Not helpful. Math, here we come!

First, we’ll need some additional data points. “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” was a 10-episode season that totals 8 hours and 46 minutes of runtime. “Menendez” is shorter: 7 hours and 54 minutes over nine episodes.

Netflix’s own basic math to compute a “View” (Total Time Viewed/Runtime) gives us more than 22 million views for “Dahmer” Week 1. Divide that number by the number...

“Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” debuted atop Netflix’s most-watched TV series list within just days of its release.

Ryan Murphy’s latest true crime installment logged 12.3 million views between its debut on Thursday, Sept. 19, and Sunday, Sept. 22, taking the No. 1 spot on the streamer’s most-watched English TV list this week. The Nicholas Alexander Chavez and Cooper Koch-led series also ranked in the Top 10 in 89 countries.

The Menendez-centric series tallied up 97.5 million hours viewed with its first four days, outpacing viewership for “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” which scored 196.2 million hours viewed within its debut week. AMC made a bet earlier this year that licensing a number of its shows to Netflix would help them find more viewers. That bet appears to have paid off.

Two AMC shows, Dark Winds and A Discovery of Witches, are among the top 10 streaming titles for the week of Aug. 19-25. They were added to Netflix at the beginning of that week as part of a deal struck in July to place about a dozen AMC shows on the service, complete with branding as the “AMC Collection.” (The shows will be available for 12 months.)

It’s not new territory for AMC, which partially credited Netflix for a huge spike in ratings for Breaking Bad’s final season and has also licensed The Walking Dead and Better Call Saul, among others, to the streamer in the past.

Dark Winds drew 929 million minutes of viewing for the week, good for fourth place overall.

AMC is the latest to benefit from the Netflix effect, with A Discovery of Witches and Dark Winds jumping onto the Nielsen charts in the week the series debuted on the streamer.

Dark Winds tallied 929M minutes viewed from August 19 to August 25 with a strong concentration among the 50+ audience, Nielsen reported Thursday. With only 12 episodes across two seasons, it’s an outsized success for the series, putting it at fourth place on the overall charts.

Meanwhile, A Discovery of Witches racked up 849M minutes viewed from August 19 to August 25, which put it at No. 7 on the overall list. Both Dark Winds and A Discovery of Witches landed on the streamer on August 19, making this quite an impressive first week for the series.

A Discovery of Witches drew 48% of its audience from the 18-49 demo, making its performance all the more impressive, as the younger, streaming-forward age group is generally the most coveted.

All episodes of Twilight of the Gods are now streaming on Netflix, and the review embargo for Zack Snyder's adult animated Norse mythology series lifted around the same time the show premiered.

This isn't always a great sign, but the first wave of reviews have been mostly very positive.

Snyder's work has rarely gone over well with critics, but his last Netflix collaboration - the Rebel Moon movies - really came in for a drubbing. So far, Twilight of the Gods has fared a lot better.

Though there are some negative verdicts, the majority of write-ups praise the animation style, world-building, voice-acting and bloody action - although it sounds like Snyder may have overindulged in the graphic violence and sex a little too much for some tastes.
