This marked the debut of the characters of Laverne DeFazio and Shirley Feeney, as played by Penny Marshall and Cindy Williams respectively. The pair made such an impact that they were spun off into their own very successful series which premiered about a month and half later on January 27, 1976.
The three actresses credited as "Girl #1", "Girl #2" and "Girl #3" are the three main females in the grocery store scene. Actress Sheila Sisco, "Girl #1", is the first girl Richie approaches. "Girl #2" is the one with the eggs in her shopping cart and is played by actress Debbie Chaffin even though the credits erroneously say actress Kit McDonough. McDonough is in the episode but she plays the blonde standing behind the piano at Arnold's. Finally, actress Suzann Arnold, "Girl #3", is the grocery store shoplifter.
Richie has a date with Shirley Feeney. The same two actors (Cindy Williams and Ron Howard) were boyfriend and girlfriend in American Graffiti (1973).
A number of bruises can be seen on Cindy Williams' left leg when she sits down on the Cunningham couch as Ritchie puts his arm around her.
Early on when Fonzie and Ritchie are talking in "Fonzie's office", as always there is a lot of writing on the walls. Near the phone you can see someone has written "Call Shirley". A while later, after failing to pick up girls at the grocery store then end up doing exactly that, they call Shirley.
