Measuring end-of-life anxiety with an open heart if not the most disciplined head, science-fiction-tinged drama Omni Loop serves up a couple nice moments for its lead performers, but otherwise relies on a viewer’s offscreen feelings about mortality to supply its punch. The result, pleasant enough but frustratingly bland, exists in a soupy,...

The Bear's Ayo Edebiri star continues to rise as she takes a central role in time loop film Omni Loop, opposite Mary-Louise Parker.
Excuse the poor time travel gag, but what is it about time loop movies that never gets old?
We’ve seen the narrative conceit bolted on to almost every genre imaginable at this point, but it’s an idea that still feels fresh even though the decades since 1993’s Groundhog Day have given us Edge Of Tomorrow, Palm Springs, Happy Death Day, Source Code and more. There’s a whole range of genres in that list alone and the list of time loop movies goes way beyond that smattering of titles.
Get set for another entry in the genre, with the arrival of Omni Loop in September. The film premiered at South by Southwest in March of this year. Ahead of the film’s release in the US next month,...

One of Netflix's tactics to keep audiences engaged is finding forgotten films and presenting them to modern viewers. So often the streamer asks us all the question, "Are you sure you didn't like this when it first came out?," and apparently our collective response is frequently "No, actually, it's kinda good." This happened earlier this year with forgotten action movie "The Bricklayer" and prior to that Netflix breathed new life into Keanu Reeves' 2008 crime-thriller "Street Kings." In the latter's case, it was a worthy resurgence for a decent little effort from director David Ayer that slipped under the radar when it first released. But in the case of, say, "The Snowman," which resurfaced in Netflix in 2023 after a dismal theatrical debut back in 2017, we started to get the idea that Netflix viewers will watch pretty much anything.
Now, the streaming juggernaut is once again offering a forgotten film somewhat of a reprieve.

8. Source Code (2011)
Have you ever considered that the most optimal way to prevent terrorist attacks is to lock soldiers into a never-ending hell? A US soldier wakes up stuck in a military simulation: he needs to find a terrorist on a commuter train before the latter succeeds, but he only has eight minutes to do that. So he dies, over and over…
You can watch Source Code on Netflix, Apple TV, and Prime Video.
7. Deja Vu (2006)
Another soldier, another terrorist attack — but this time, everything is real. He needs to prevent a bomb from going off on a ferry and killing countless civilians, and he has little time to do so. The mission becomes personal when the soldier falls in love with one of the passengers, but no matter how hard he tries, she keeps dying every time.
You can watch Deja Vu on Apple TV, Disney Plus, and Prime Video.

Documentary fans have a lot to be excited about this month on HBO and Max. April begins with the premiere of The Synanon Fix, a docuseries that follows the rise and fall of the cult-like drug rehabilitation program Synanon. The documentary Brandy Hellville and the Cult of Fast Fashion takes a deep-dive into the controversial “one size fits most” clothing brand Brandy Mellville and the impact of fast fashion on the planet.
An American Bombing: The Road to April 19th looks at the surge of political violence and anti-government sentiment that led to the 1995 Oklahoma City Bombing, and the effects still felt nearly 30 years later. HBO is also returning with a second part to their popular docuseries The Jinx, with filmmakers continuing their investigation of Robert Durst.

Duncan Jones made an incredible debut with his Sam Rockwell-starring sci-fi, Moon. However, his follow-ups haven’t collected as much acclaim with the Groundhog Day-on-a-train thriller Source Code, his step into the big-budget franchise world with Warcraft, and his high-concept Netflix sci-fi, Mute. For years, Jones has been developing an adaptation of the comic Rogue Trooper, which is to be an animated feature. The production has been rolling along, and Variety has revealed the cast of actors that Jones has been able to compile for the film.
Aneurin Barnard, Hayley Atwell and Jack Lowden are reportedly said to be the main cast in the lead roles for the science-fiction animated film. Director Mohamed Diab got started working on dramas, making his feature debut with the 2010 film Cairo 678, about “three women and their search for justice from the daily plight of sexual harassment in Egypt.” That was followed by the 2016 film Clash, which takes place entirely inside a police van and shows what happens when “a number of detainees from different political and social backgrounds are brought together by fate”. In 2021, he made Amira, which showed that a “girl’s world is turned upside down when she learns the man she grew up idolizing is not her real father.” Then he shifted gears, directing four of the six episodes that made up the Marvel / Disney+ series Moon Knight. And now Deadline reports that Diab has signed on to direct a sci-fi thriller called Leap.

Time loops are a cinematic commonplace now, thanks to the likes of “Groundhog Day,” “13 Monkeys,” “Palm Springs,” “Source Code,” “Edge Of Tomorrow,” “Happy Death Day,” and “Russian Doll” (with Chris Marker‘s “La Jetée” the ur-text to them all). This week's big streaming releases include the return of "Sweet Tooth," a rare post-apocalyptic tale that's all about optimism (and cute critters), and the premiere of "Citadel," the second-most-expensive TV show ever made and the hopeful start of a global franchise. Elsewhere, if you want more apocalyptic fun with big smiles and dark undertones, there's "Ranking of Kings" and "Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts." Or perhaps you want something before the apocalypse but with dark forces starting to gather, like the criminally underseen "The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance." For something completely different, "Person of Interest" is a spy thriller with some rather prescient thoughts about AI, "Source Code" is a fun sci-fi time loop thriller, "Spies in Disguise," is a hilarious take on the "James Bond" formula, and "Everything Everywhere All at Once" stares at the end of the world and chooses kindness.

Ti West has locked in an all-star cast for his Mia Goth-led A24 horror pic MaXXXine, with Elizabeth Debicki (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3.), Moses Sumney (The Idol), Michelle Monaghan (Nanny), Bobby Cannavale (The Watcher), Lily Collins (Emily in Paris), Halsey (Americana), Giancarlo Esposito (Better Call Saul) and Kevin Bacon (City on a Hill) closing deals for roles.
MaXXXine is the third title in A24‘s first major horror franchise, on the heels of West’s films X and Pearl, both of which were released to much acclaim last year. The ’70s-set X had Goth pulling double duty as Maxine, who sees her pornography-shooting friends violently murdered in Texas, and one of their elderly assailants, Pearl. The latter film, set in 1918, meanwhile, served up an origin story for the latter villain character.

To have your consciousness transferred to another body sounds really cool. Remember “Source Code” (2011) starring Jake Gyllenhaal? But keeping in mind the lust for war that humans have, what if someone decides to turn this concept into a reality, developing such technology and weaponizing it? This is what “Assassin” deals with. However, while the concept is interesting, especially the ending, the film fails to have the intended impact, thanks to a lazy story and even lazier acting. Here’s more on the film:
Spoilers Ahead
‘Assassin’ Plot Synopsis: What Happens In The Film?

Upon reaching out to Valmora, the guy who recruited Sebastian, Alexa finds out that her husband’s consciousness is inside a bug that international smuggler Adrian Delorio is presently in possession of. Justin Lin may be the foremost director of the "Fast and Furious" franchise, but he's taking a break from the Hollywood big leagues for his next film: an indie movie about the misguided missionary John Allen Chau. Before helming half of the entries in one of the most successful blockbuster series in modern times, Lin directed indie movies that centered on the Asian-American communities of Southern California, including the quirky comedy "Shopping for Fangs" and the Sundance Grand Jury Prize-nominated "Better Luck Tomorrow."
Lin directed "Shopping for Fangs" with Quentin Lee when they were both students in UCLA's film school in 1997. The film marks the acting debut of John Cho, who would go on to work with Lin on his follow-up feature, "Better Luck Tomorrow," as well as years later on "Star Trek Beyond." After spending 15-plus years as the brain behind the “Fast and the Furious” franchise, Justin Lin has lined up his first post-car racing film. The filmmaker, who left “Fast X” over creative differences last year, is set to direct “The Last Days of John Allen Chau,” IndieWire has confirmed.
The film, an indie based on the 2019 Outside Magazine article by Alex Perry, will represent something of a return to Lin’s roots. The director first rose to prominence with several independent films like “Shopping for Fangs,” 2002 Sundance title “Better Luck Tomorrow,” and 2007’s “Finishing the Game.” Since 2006, however, Lin has become best known for his work on the blockbuster “Fast and the Furious” movies, directing “Tokyo Drift” and the following four titles in the series. After handing the franchise off to James Wan and F. Gary Gray after “Fast and Furious 6,” he returned to the director’s chair for 2021’s “F9,...

Actor Jake Gyllenhaal has starred in several critically acclaimed and commercially successful projects in his long career. But the film End of Watch provided him with an experience he might never forget.
David Ayer promised to taint Jake Gyllenhaal’s soul in ‘End of Watch’ Jake Gyllenhaal | Jason Laveris/Getty Images
In 2012, Gyllenhaal added the police thriller End of Watch to his filmography. The movie was directed and written by David Ayer, with veteran actor Michael Pena as Gyllenhaal’s co-star. Pena and Gyllenhaal played the role of two young police officers documenting their daily experiences on the job on video. As time goes on, the two police officers find themselves in an increasingly volatile situation.
The Nightcrawler star was fascinated by Ayer’s script the moment it reached his hands. So much so that it woke up an already exhausted Gyllenhaal who was tired because of his work schedule.

Blood is a horror film directed by Brad Anderson starring Michelle Monaghan.
A horror film in which, curiously, the acting is outstanding.
And this is not exactly good for the genre: don´t do much scarin’.
Movie Review Blood (2022)
Blood is a movie that, despite its title, does not cause an impact that it should in the retina of the viewer, at least for a (supposedly) horror film.
This is a good movie in all senses, from the technical level all the way to the development of the characters and the settings. It has rhythm and takes its time to do the presentations, in developing the feelings of the child and the dog correctly, but this development, which is kind of tiresome, will detract the horror from the fans who expect something a little more impacting, and above all, horrifying.
Blood, in this sense, is almost a realistic film with suspense.

Jake Gyllenhaal has unfinished business to resolve in the first trailer for director Guy Ritchie’s upcoming film The Covenant.
The MGM military thriller, hitting theaters April 21, stars Gyllenhaal as Army Sergeant John Kinley, who is rescued during a tour in Afghanistan by his interpreter, played by Dar Salim. The footage shows Kinley grappling with whether to put himself back in harm’s way to rescue Ahmed.
“If it wasn’t enough for him to carry me across those mountains, now he’s hiding in a hole somewhere,” Gyllenhaal’s character says somberly in the trailer. “I should be in that hole.”
He later adds, “Ahmed and his family are in trouble. I am gonna have to get him out myself.”
The cast also includes Alexander Ludwig, Antony Starr, Jason Wong, Bobby Schofield, Sean Sagar, Sina Parvaneh, Emily Beecham, Cyrus Khodaveisi and Christian Ochoa.

Between films about deadly dancing A.I. dolls, Adam Driver fighting dinosaurs, and the uber-rich cloning themselves, there are some pretty wild sci-fi movies on the menu in early 2023. The genre has always been well-equipped to tackle the biggest issues on everybody's mind at any given point in history, and that will remain the case heading into the new year. After all, who among us isn't quivering in our boots right now at the thought of getting accidentally sent back in time to battle prehistoric monsters?
Jokes aside, of course, even 2022 mega-tentpoles like James Cameron's "Avatar: The Way of Water" have used the sci-fi genre to take a good, hard look at the most pressing concerns in the world today -- in that case, the destruction of the environment and our dwindling supply of much-needed natural resources. Such matters are nothing new, though, and have popped up in sci-fi...

The so-called Hunters discover that hundreds of high-ranking Nazi officials are living in the United States and are conspiring to create a Fourth Reich in America. The Nazi hunters, led by Pacino, will embark on a bloody quest to bring the Nazis to justice and thwart their genocidal plans. Duncan Jones' "Source Code" holds the bragging rights for beating the recent slate of multiverse films by more than a decade. The 2011 movie, for those who are not familiar, centers on Captain Colter Stevens (Jake Gyllenhaal), a U.S. Army pilot who is tasked with uncovering the identity of the terrorist behind the bombing of a Chicago commuter train. In order to do that, Colter accesses the Source Code, a newfangled invention that recreates the events on the train eight minutes prior to the bomb's detonation using the memories of the dead passengers.
If you think that's a lot to digest, you'd best get strapped in.
Upon entering the Source Code, Colter wakes up in the body of Sean Fentress (Frédérick De Grandpré), a modest school teacher who's traveling — and flirting — with a friend named Christina Warren (Michelle Monaghan). Does Sean's mind cease to exist when Colton shows up? Is the...

With its list of new releases for October 2022, Amazon Prime Video isn’t fully aboard the spooky season train but it is at least spooky adjacent.
The biggest release this month is Prime Video original series The Peripheral on Oct. 21. While not outright horror, it does sound more than a little unnerving. Based on a 2014 sci-fi novel by William Gibson, The Peripheral stars Chloë Grace Moretz as a woman in a near-future society who may have just discovered an alternate reality. Fittingly, Westworld‘s Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy serve as executive producers.
The other TV series of note in October is The Devil’s Hour on Oct. 28. This British thriller comes form Steven Moffat and tells the story of a woman who wakes up at 3:33 a.m. (the devil’s hour) each night to receive a disturbing vision.
October is home to a couple of Amazon movies of note as well.

After dropping the epic “Lord of the Rings” television series on Prime Video last month, it’s no surprise the streaming giant is taking it easy this October. They still have plenty of new shows and movies coming out, though none quite on the scale of their journey to Middle Earth.
That being said, they’re transitioning from the world of fantasy to science fiction with their new series “The Peripheral.” Touted as being from the creators of HBO’s “Westworld,” Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, the time-traveling series is based on author William Gibson’s bestselling sci-fi novel.
Per an official synopsis: “The Peripheral” centers on Flynne Fisher (Moretz), a woman trying to hold together the pieces of her broken family in a forgotten corner of tomorrow’s America. Sam Beckett never made it home. That revelation in the final episode of the original Quantum Leap, which aired in 1993, has to be among the most disparaging endings of a beloved TV show. Our hero, played by Scott Bakula, will never reunite with his beloved wife. Instead, he continues leaping into other bodies, righting historical wrongs. While that may be a bummer for fans of the original series, it provides hope for fans of the reboot, which debuted earlier this year — even if Bakula says there isn’t any.
A few weeks ago, Bakula took to Twitter to explain his absence from the series. “I have no connection with the new show, either in front of the camera or behind it,” Bakula tweeted.
