Mexican cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto has been plying his creative trade in Hollywood for over two decades. His notably instrumental camerawork can be seen in most of Martin Scorsese’s latest works and Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie.” For his directorial debut, Prieto, however, follows in the footsteps of his earlier collaborator, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu. “Pedro Paramo” (2024) is a landmark novel in Latin American literature. One that influenced Gabriel Garcia Marquez to create another, relatively popular, landmark literary work, “One Hundred Years of Solitude.” The novel is one of the early proponents of the artistic phenomenon known as “Magic Realism.”
In “Pedro Paramo,” Juan Preciado (Tenoch Huerta) travels to the abandoned ruins of what once was a bustling town called Comala. Juan was conceived in this place, as this is the place where his father, the eponymous Pedro Paramo (Manuel Garcia Rulfo), lived and ruled. Pedro abandoned Juan’s mother, Dolores (Ishbel Bautista). Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice! It’s been nearly four decades since everyone’s favorite bio-exorcist played by Michael Keaton erupted onto movie screens in 1988, and audiences have eagerly awaited his return ever since.
I recently caught part of another spirted film about mischievous ghosts, the Cary Grant classic “Topper” (1937), which is one I’ve enjoyed a few times over the years. I love a good ghost movie — scary, funny or even a little of both. With the 2024 release of “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” I started thinking about the best Funny ghost movies — those that might offer a little bit of a scare, but are mostly about the inconveniences and embarrassing situations those who have trouble leaving this realm cause the earthly beings they haunt.

According to Duran Duran’s Nick Rhodes, the band “unlocked an unexpected box of curiosity and creativity” when they started making their 2023 album, Danse Macabre. Now, the latest product of that newfound energy has arrived: “New Moon (Dark Phase),” a reimagined version of their 1984 song “New Moon On Monday.”
Released as a single ahead of the upcoming deluxe re-release of Danse Macabre, “New Moon (Dark Phase)” swaps out the original’s pulsing ‘80s synths with a more ethereal, modern arrangement, featuring contributions from former band member, Andy Taylor. Throughout, vocalist Simon Le Bon carries the melody, gracefully slipping into his upper register on the verses and delivering the chorus’ catchy hook.

Speaking about the release in a new statement, Rhodes explained that the inspiration sparked with Danse Macabre “was somehow still lingering,” which led the band to return to the studio for even more recording.

For the second year in a row, the ParaPod Podcast Awards are set to celebrate those podcasters and producers creating content in the paranormal genre. This genre includes podcasts covering topics that range from UFO/Uap sightings and extraterrestrial encounters to ghosts, possessions, and hauntings, from new discoveries in world history and ancient mysteries, to psychic phenomena and metaphysics, and more. Often overlooked by mainstream media awards, these podcasts are just as worthy of acknowledgement and acclaim for their quality, professionalism, and perceived value as content creators in “normal” genres.
“We are thrilled to be celebrating paranormal podcasts again this year,” shares Tony Sweet, founder of ParaPod Festival, and its parent organization, Earthly Beings Foundation. “As a podcast network owner and producer, this genre has always held a special place in my heart - and on my playlist! I’m excited for the continued success of paranormal content.”

The Phantom of the Opera is sometimes considered one of the Universal Monsters. I get it. From the 1925 version that gave us one of the most infamous unmasking sequences ever courtesy of the great Lon Chaney Sr., through the Hammer iteration with Herbert Lom, all the way up to the 2004 film that gave a lot of us our intro to Gerard Butler. Speaking of that movie, its inspiration and reason for its existence was the Andrew Lloyd Weber musical that premiered in October of 1986 and has had runs all the way through as recently as 2021. 1989 was the beginning of its U.S. tour and we got not one but Two Phantom movies that year. Phantom of the Mall: Eric’s Revenge is cheesy and may just be more well known due to our friend Joe Bob featuring it on the Last Drive In recently. Here in the JoBlo Horror kitchen today...

This is already shaping up to be an interesting year for Best New Artist at the Grammys. The category might lack a clear frontrunner so far, as it is early in the year, but we do have some serious contenders who might pick up more steam closer to voting time this fall. Plus, an open field might make it even more interesting, unlike years where the winner was rather obvious like when Olivia Rodrigo and Billie Eilish prevailed.
TikTok breakout Benson Boone might be positioning himself as the one to beat. He had already achieved some recognition before 2024 with his viral tracks “In the Stars” and “Ghost Town,” the latter of which charted on the Billboard Hot 100. Werewolf bikers, one might think they would be fairly common in movies, but apart from Hellhounds I can only think of a couple. Duran Duran are getting into the Halloween spirit with Danse Macabre, a witchy new album featuring a mix of new songs and covers of classics by Billie Eilish, Talking Heads, and more. Check it out below via Apple Music or Spotify.
The new wave legends’ 16th studio album was inspired by a “crazy” Halloween show Duran Duran put on last year. Rather than going full “Bela Lugosi’s Dead,” however, Danse Macabre doesn’t take itself too seriously. “It’s supposed to be fun!” singer Simon Le Bon explained in a statement.
That said, original compositions like its title track — which we named Song of the Week — coexist alongside covers of Billie Eilish’s “Bury a Friend,” Talking Heads’ “Psycho Killer,” and The Rolling Stones’ “Paint It Black.” The project also features some special guests, including former guitarist Andy Taylor and legendary artist Nile Rodgers on the song “Black Moonlight.

Duran Duran have shared their funky new song “Black Moonlight,” one of the band’s three originals from their upcoming Halloween-inspired, largely covers album Danse Macabre.
For the track, Duran Duran reunited with longtime collaborator Nile Rodgers, who previously produced the band’s 1986 LP Notorious, in addition to other contributions throughout the decades.
“‘Black Moonlight’ is this classic Duran Duran-Nile Rodgers collaboration,” Simon Le Bon said in a statement. “When Nile started playing his guitar in the studio, he really inspired everyone with his riff, and the song just kind of wrote itself.

With its list of new releases for May 2023, Amazon Prime Video is increasing its global reach.
The streamer’s biggest original offering this month is a German series. Hohlbeins’ – The Gryphon, based on the works of Wolfgang Holhlbein, will present a sprawling fantasy tale about three teens discovering a fantastical world called The Black Tower where “the Gryphon, a world-devouring monster, mercilessly subjugates all living creatures.”
The only other original title of note in May is Freevee comedy Primo on the 19th. Written by author and journalist Shea Serrano and produced by Michael Schur (The Good Place), this coming-of-age series will follow a teenager balancing “college aspirations, societal expectations, and a hectic home life on the south side of San Antonio.”

As the schedules begin to drop for this summer’s music festivals, Rolling Loud recently announced its headliners. One of the nation’s biggest hip-hop fests, the three-day extravaganza draws big-name rappers. This year, the event will feature headliners Travis Scott, A$AP Rocky, and Playboi Carti and special guests Kodak Black, 21 Savage, and Lil Uzi Vert, among dozens of other artists. But when Kid Cudi performed last year, he cut his set short after concertgoers kept throwing objects at him. So it’s no surprise his name doesn’t appear in this year’s lineup.

The first Rolling Loud was a one-day event held in 2015 in Miami, Florida. Over the years, the festival has expanded to larger venues, increased its format to three days, and collaborated with other states and countries to sponsor similar events.

The Pink Ladies of “Grease,” the most colorful Rydell High students, are back on April 6 on Paramount+. However, this won’t be the same collection of young women from the original film — or even its cult classic sequel. This round, we see how the popular clique got its start. The girls now have a show of their own: “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies,” a salute to 1950s teens who refuse to conform to conventional standards. The new musical series shows us Rydell High before Sandy and Danny start strutting down the halls. The show stars Marisa Davila, Cheyenne Isabel Wells, Ari Notartomaso, and Tricia Fukuhara.

Ghost Town takes place in a boomtown gone bust and involves prostitutes. But that’s where the similarities end, rather than a drama this is a horror film about what seems to be a rather literal ghost town.
Solomon is a drifter in dire straights. His horse has died, he’s out of money and his gun has gone missing. Luckily for him, there’s a town visible in the distance, and a job working for Hagan the owner of the local saloon and whorehouse. He’s not five minutes into the job when one of the customers is shot dead while they’re talking to him.

Adam Lambert is not a fan of the idea of Theo James playing George Michael in a biopic.
Rumours circulated earlier this week that a biopic was in order for the “Careless Whisper” singer, with talks of the “White Lotus” star taking on the leading role.

James, 38, showed interest in playing Michael during an interview on “Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen” on January 13.

As the lead singer of the politically and socially conscious Specials, Hall achieved U.K. fame and cult status through songs such as “Ghost Town,” “Gangsters” and “Too Much Too Young.

Terry Hall, the longtime voice of legendary ska group The Specials has died after what the band termed a brief illness. He was 63.
Hall and the Specials reached their widest appeal with the haunting, socially conscious “Ghost Town,” which spent three weeks at No. 1 on the U.K. singles charts in 1981. The song was a commentary on economic strife in Margaret Thatcher’s England and the social unrest of the era, including riots that year in Britain. It was named “Single of the Year” by all three of the major UK music magazines.
The Specials were formed in the late ’70s by songwriter/keyboardist Dammers, vocalist Tim Strickland, guitarist/vocalist Lynval Golding, drummer Silverton Hutchinson and bassist Horace Panter (a.k.a. Sir Horace Gentleman). Strickland was replaced by Hall shortly after the band’s formation. They were at the vanguard of the the 2 Tone ska revival of the late 1970s in Britain,...

Saturday Night Live alum Chris Redd misses the old Kanye West. It’s not just the one from before the rapper’s recent anti-semitic and anti-Black tirades, but the one from way before he stepped foot on the SNL dress rehearsal stage for the first run through of his unaired pro-Trump rant in September 2018.
During a recent appearance on the Daily Beast’s The Last Laugh podcast, the comedian recalled his encounters with West when he appeared on the show as musical guest on an episode hosted by Adam Driver.
