Three-time Oscar nominee Sigourney Weaver has proven herself a capable leading lady in a variety of genres, including science fiction, fantasy, comedy, horror and drama. Let’s take a look back at 16 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Weaver made her film debut with a walk-on role as Woody Allen‘s girlfriend in “Annie Hall” (1977). Her breakthrough came just two years later for Ridley Scott‘s landmark sci-fi thriller “Alien” (1979). As Ripley, the lone survivor aboard a spacecraft besieged by a snarling, ferocious extra-terrestrial, Weaver broke down barriers for female action stars and helped launch a franchise that led to three sequels: James Cameron‘s “Aliens” (1986), David Fincher‘s “Alien 3” (1992), and Jean-Pierre Jeunet‘s “Alien: Resurrection” (1997).
“Aliens” brought Weaver her first Oscar nomination as Best Actress, a rarity for the genre. Not to be typecast, she found further success in a variety of roles that didn’t require donning a space helmet.

Hulu has to be pretty pleased with its list of new releases for June 2024. That’s because it’s about to be the summer of The Bear once again.
The Bear season 3 premieres all of its episodes on June 27 on Hulu. This FX dramedy has proven to be one of the most successful shows of its era. Jeremy Allen White stars as Carmy Berzatto, a world-famous chef who returns home to Chicago to help his floundering family restaurant after the death of his brother. Season 2 saw The Original Beef of Chicagoland crew transform the spot into fine dining establishment The Bear. It ruled. So will season 3 probably.
FX is responsible for the other major TV release on Hulu this month. Clipped premieres on June 4 and is about the scandalous real life story of Donald Sterling, the awful owner of the basketball team the Los Angeles Clippers. Another intriguing TV option...

David Permut is having a good day. “Rustin,” which he executive produced (he prefers “shepherded” and is quick to name his colleagues) got two important Golden Globe nominations, Best Film Drama Actor for Colman Domingo and Best Original Song for Lenny Kravitz‘s “Road to Freedom.” His other current project is the television series “Lawmen: Bass Reeves” for which David Oyelowo nabbed a nom.

Made-for-tv movies have developed from their Hallmark stereotype in recent years, thanks to the rise of companies such as HBO. Although these films feature lower budgets and smaller casts than larger productions, they offer directors and actors greater freedom – leading them toward more successful results.

The full cast for the upcoming TV series adaptation of Stephen King's The Mist has been revealed and the most notable star is Vikings actress Alyssa Sutherland.
The series will tell the story of "a foreboding mist that arrives in one small town ushering in a terrifying new reality for its residents, putting their humanity to the test." According to THR, Sutherland will play Eve Cunningham, “a wife and mother who fights to protect her teenage daughter from unknown dangers lurking both inside and outside the mist while facing down her past.”
I’m a big fan of this story. It one of my favorites that King has written and I also thought the movie directed by Frank Darabont was great, so I’m looking forward to this series and I have high hopes for it.

This story first appeared in the Movies and Limited Series issue of TheWrap Emmy magazine. The phrase “a Lifetime movie” usually conjures up a specific type of film — one geared for a female audience and typically genteel. In recent years, the network’s Emmy nominees have included “A Trip to Bountiful,” “Georgia O’Keeffe,” “Prayers for Bobby,” “Coco Chanel” and “Why I Wore Lipstick to My Mastectomy.” But “Stockholm, Pennsylvania,” which the network bought out of the Sundance Film Festival this year, might be the least Lifetime-y movie Lifetime has ever aired. The dark, emotionally wrenching story of a girl who is.

While Ryan Kelley made a strong first impression when he starred alongside Sigourney Weaver as the suicidal Bobby Griffith in the heartbreaking TV movie Prayers For Bobby, he stirred us up in an entirely different way from his first appearance last season on MTV’s werewolf drama, Teen Wolf.
And for those of you who said last year that you wanted to see more of Kelley’s Deputy Parrish, the fourth season, which kicks off tonight, is going to deliver just that. Not only is Parrish going to be more involved with the adventures of Scott (Tyler Posey), Stiles (Dylan O’Brien), Derek (Tyler Hoechlin), Lydia (Holland Roden) and new series regulars Kira (Arden Cho) and Malia (Shelley Hennig), but the young Deputy may also find himself with a love interest of his own.

Ryan Kelley first drew our attention as the son in Prayers for Bobby. Now he’s on MTV’s Teen Wolf as Deputy Parrish. As we all know, Beacon Hills law enforcement (other than Sheriff Stilinski) has a way of winding up dead so here’s a silent prayer to the powers that be that the good deputy sticks around for awhile. And that they get him out of his uniform tout suite, because Kelley has been seriously working out these days– no doubt to keep pace with the rest of the hunky Teen Wolf cast.
Judging by this brand new photo of the actor he more than holds his own with the other guys on the show!

Prayers for Bobby is based on the true story of Mary Griffith (Sigourney Weaver), a conservative Christian mother whose son Bobby (Ryan Kelley) comes out as a homosexual in his teen years. For years, she tries to change her son's sexuality by praying for him, sending him to gay conversion support groups, and laying immense guilt on him for his sins. After a tragic event, however, Mary is forced to reevaluate her beliefs and how she has treated her son over the years, and she becomes a public advocate for Lgbt rights.

As Soderbergh's Liberace biopic hits our screens, why is it that homosexual love stories now work so much better than hetero?
I know where I'll be Sunday night. The reviews coming out of Cannes for Steven Soderbergh's Liberace biopic, Behind the Candelabra, which airs on HBO on Sunday night, have turned it into must-see TV.
We might have been able to guess that Soderbergh's take on the kitsch-addicted superstar would turn out to be "mesmeric, riskily incorrect, outrageously watchable and simply outrageous" (The Guardian). Or that Michael Douglas would be "shrewd, rude, wickedly funny" (Indiewire) in the central role. What is interesting is that the film, which was made for HBO because it was "too gay" for mainstream cinematic release, has turned out to be "both hilarious and heartrending" (The Playlist), an "intimate love story" (Thompson on Hollywood) and Soderbergh's "most emotional and touching work" to date (Hollywood Elsewhere...

Brace yourselves. This list of the Top 100 Greatest Gay Movies is probably going to generate some howls of protest thanks to a rather major upset in the rankings. Frankly, one that surprised the hell out of us here at AfterElton.

Usually I have a specific reason for picking each week's candidate for "Best Movie Ever" -- say, if Jane Fonda goes back to work or summer is approaching -- but with 1988's Working Girl, it's just a matter of necessity. It has to be considered for Best Movie Ever because 1) I can watch it again and again, 2) It doesn't mind being ridiculous, and 3) It spends most of its time being right. Plus, this Mike Nichols jam is a beaming strobe light of '80s ferocity, and not just because Joan Cusack's teal eyeshadow and Sigourney Weaver's vermilion blazer will char your retinas. This movie is a celebration of self-respect, floor-length leather jackets, and drive. Let's count up its greatest assets and see if it comes out looking better than Citizen Kane.
1. Melanie Griffith is so, so right for this role. Or so, so wrong!

Sigourney Weaver's set to star in her own USA Network series. The multiple Oscar-nominee will head up "Political Animals" as Elaine Barrish, Secretary of State and former first lady who's in the process of recovering from the end of her marriage and the loss of the presidential nomination (who could have possibly inspired this scenario?). The show's the creation of Greg Berlanti (“Brothers & Sisters”) and Laurence Mark (“How Do You Know") and will air this summer. James Wolk ("Lone Star") will play Barrish's son and chief of staff, but no word yet on who'll play her "philandering ex-husband who is still as much in love with her as the office he once held." Weaver's made few excursions to the small screen in her lengthy career -- though her 2009 turn as Mary Griffith in the Lifetime movie "Prayers for Bobby" did net her Emmy, SAG and Golden Globe nominations, and.

On any given day, Lifetime Movie Network might be airing The Truth About Jane. The 2000 made-for-tv film was about a teenage girl coming to terms with her sexuality, and her mother's struggle to understand it herself. Stockard Channing boosted the film's star power and it was a touching portrait of how a family works together in coming out, acceptance and realizing that unconditional love is what's most important.
So, whatever happened to Stockard and the women of The Truth About Jane?
Stockard Channing (Jane's homophobic-turned-understanding mother)

They're all set in the past – as is J. Edgar, an upcoming movie directed by Clint Eastwood and written by Dustin Lance Black that is getting considerable buzz, and the upcoming James Franco movie, The Broken Tower.
Meanwhile, over the same period, many of the TV movies that have made the biggest impression – Prayers for Bobby, Pedro, An Englishman in New York – have also been set in the past.
What's that about?

When I first watched this week's episode of 90210, I was highly annoyed because it seemed like Teddy got so little screentime — especially in comparison to Namaste Naomi's increasingly tiresome relationship with Hot Geek. But when I actually measured how much time Teddy had, it clocked in at nearly six minutes. Granted, one of those minutes was watching Sterling Silver rhapsodize over the wonders of a Gouda grilled cheese sandwich (only at West Beverly Hills High), but that still left Teddy with close to five minutes facetime. So why did I still feel like he's getting short shrift from the 90210 writers?
It certainly didn't help that last week he got zero minutes, but more than anything I think my gripe has to do with how little development they are giving Teddy and Marco's relationship. When we last saw Teddy, he was calling Marco to set up the tennis lesson he...

Queer Corner interviews homohop breakout duo Freaky Boiz. Apropos of nothing, here's a new promotional pic of actor Ryan Kelley, who was heartbreaking as gay teen Bobby in Prayers for Bobby. He's matured nicely.

Lets face it, as television viewers we grow attached to the gay characters that resonate with us on the small screen, and with the actors that bring life to these roles. We also find ourselves growing fond of out-and-proud actors that have opted to play it straight thats why its called acting, people and vice versa.
So when their shows are cancelled or taken off the air before they wear out their welcome (whatever, I still miss Sex and the City on Sunday nights, ok?), it can be a little bit difficult to see them slide into other TV roles easier than Lindsay Lohan checking into another rehab (Im rootin for you, girl).
Alas, sometimes that isnt always the case, which might have you asking yourself, Where are they now? In some cases for these actors, it could be taken as a query of, Where did they disappear to?
But for curiosity's (and manner's) sake,...

Based on the book of the same name by Leroy Adams, Prayers for Bobby is based on a true story, about a woman named Mary Griffith. Griffith is a California woman with strong beliefs in her faith. Her son Bobby, after many years reveals that he is gay, and Griffith struggles to reconcile her religious beliefs with that of her love for her son. The film also focuses on Bobby and his attempts to carve out a life for himself in the face of this family adversary. An emotional tale about family and ,the film is lent credence by a strong lead performance from Sigourney Weaver.
As a Lifetime film, it is not likely to appeal to anyone who isn’t already a fan of their made for television movies. It is chock full of dense melodrama and moments of incredible overacting. Weaver definitely helps bring the film to a...

When you think of Sigourney Weaver, probably the first image that comes to mind is her iconic action heroine Ellen Ripley, big-ass gun in hand, doing battle with acid-belching aliens. But her talent runs far deeper than shouting lines like “Get away from her, you bitch!” Last year, the three-time Oscar nominee appeared not only in James Cameron’s Avatar, but in the Lifetime drama Prayers for Bobby, earning an Emmy nod playing a real-life mother, Mary Griffith, who can’t accept her son Bobby’s homosexuality, but becomes an advocate for gay rights after his tragic suicide. A precursor...

A few weeks ago we asked readers to submit up to five of their favorite movies in our third annual favorite gay film poll. We wanted to see which older gay films have timeless appeal and which recent gay films you judged important enough to register in the rankings.
After voting closed we sorted through the nearly 15,000 nominations (representing over 500 individual titles) to identify your top fifty favorite gay films.
Tabulating this data is actually a bit harder than it sounds. For instance, do you know how many different ways our readers can type/abbreviate "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert?" We counted about a dozen!
But we're not complaining, because the list that resulted this year is actually rather interesting.
Nine new films made their way into the rankings, and five of these are of very recent vintage. This represents a strong showing for current queer cinema.

Chyler Leigh and Matt Czuchry (as Jordan) in Lifetime's The 19th Wife
Last night, Lifetime aired a TV movie called The 19th Wife that tells the story of a man, Jordan, who has been excommunicated from the Mormon Church, and his efforts to help his mother, a member of a polygamous sect who has been accused of killing her husband.
The movie is based on a novel by David Ebershoff. But there was one big difference between the movie and novel: in the novel, Jordan is gay, and a sub-plot involves his relationship with another man. This was cut from the movie version.
We asked Ebershoff, who lives in New York City, for a reaction, and he told us:
I had no role in the adaptation. A few weeks before filming began I learned that Jordan had been rewritten as straight. I was told that this was a network decision.

Executive producer Stanley M. Brooks of Once Upon a Time Films did not attend an AFTRA arbitration hearing Tuesday concerning more than $1 million owed from a 2008 Logo TV series but was represented by an attorney who acknowledged that there were unpaid residual payments, according to Del Shores, who was creator and director of the show in question, "Sordid Lives: The Series."
"I went to the AFTRA arbitration today to be a witness for AFTRA," Shores said in a statement to THR after the hearing. "I was not called upon to testify. My understanding is that Stan Brooks and Once Upon a Time Films agreed that they owed the actors of 'Sordid Lives: The Series' somewhere around $1.1 million in unpaid residuals and requested to meet with all three guilds involved -- WGA, DGA and AFTRA -- to try to come to a settlement for the artists owed, including myself.

Fox's "Glee" added to its Golden Globe and SAG prizes Saturday as the musical picked up the award for best comedy at the 21st annual GLAAD Media Awards, presented by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation at the Hyatt Regent Century Plaza Hotel.

Two films at this year's Lesbian and Gay film festival confirm my worst fears: same-sex romances at the cinema are usually doomed
Warning: this article contains spoilers …
Why aren't there more feelgood gay films? Gay cinema can do drama, comedy, romance, sex and tragedy rather well. But it's not so hot on happy-ever-after endings. The gay character usually winds up dead, or mad. Or mad, then dead. Two films at London's Gay and Lesbian film festival confirmed my fears: both were coming-out stories in which the protagonists die by the age of about 20. One by his own hand; the other is hit by a car as she stands, torn between running after the woman she's fallen in love with, or turning back to the boyfriend she's planning to leave. Not enormously uplifting endings - particularly for any young gay people in the audience who might be struggling to come out themselves.

‘Sex and the City’ creator Michael Patrick King banned the actress – who plays Miranda Hobbs in the TV series and subsequent films – from eating during shooting because she drowns out dialogue from the other members of the cast.

The 21st Annual Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) Media Awards ceremony took place last night in New York, and the stars were out in force. The GLAAD Media Awards elevate and promote fair, accurate and inclusive stories of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (Lgbt) issues, people and allies that have increased awareness, and understanding and respect for the lives of Lgbt people. Cynthia Nixon and Joy Behar were the night's honored guests, but awards were presented to countless other individuals for their contributions in promoting acceptance and tolerance of the Lgbt community.
