With its list of new releases for May 2024, HBO streamer Max is bringing back one of the best comedies on television.

Hacks season 3 premieres on May 2 and will continue the tortured (platonic-ish) love affair between comedy superstar Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) and her former joke writer Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder). That will be followed up by Pretty Little Liars: Summer School on May 9.

Movie-lovers have more than enough to keep them occupied in May 2024 as well. The latest John Green adaptation, Turtles All the Way Down, will premiere on May 3. That will be followed by intriguing original documentary MoviePass, MovieCrash on May 30. Max is also putting its Warner Bros. origins to good use with a bunch of excellent library movies like The Iron Claw on May 10 and Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice on May 26.

A New Year means lots of removals from Netflix and January 1st is looking busy, with over 100 movies set to leave the service already. Below, we’ll be keeping track of all the Netflix departures for the first month of 2024.

First, a few housekeeping notes as to how Netflix removals work before we dive in. Due to licensing agreements, shows and movies added to Netflix aren’t added forever. Instead, they’re essentially rented for a fixed period. All the shows below have their current window on Netflix ending and will likely be bound for a rival streaming service.

We list titles slightly differently from other outlets, with our listings being the actual day of removal. If you want to watch any titles scheduled to expire on January 1st, for example, you’ll need to watch by the end of December 31st.

Video Game movies have truly turned a corner over the last handful of years, but with "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" currently in the midst of a record-breaking run in theaters, the tide has truly turned in a big, bad way. Exclusive: Gravitas Ventures has picked up North American rights to Hustle Down, R. Ellis Frazier’s action-comedy, and will release theatrically in October.

The deal was struck with Ultramedia, which is handling international sales rights and screening the pic in Cannes.

The movie stars Tom Sizemore (Heat), Paul Sidhu (Repeater), Bai Ling (Crank: High Voltage), Kevin Gage (Heat), Raymond J. Barry (Training Day), Vanessa Angel (Weird Science), and Noel Gugliemi.

Mike & Molly alum Reno Wilson, who currently stars in NBC’s Good Girls, has signed with A3 Artists Agency for representation.

Wilson is maybe best known for his role as Officer Carl McMillan on the comedy series Mike & Molly, alongside Melissa McCarthy and Billy Gardell, which aired for six seasons on CBS. He currently plays the series regular role of Stan Hill on Good Girls, opposite Christina Hendricks, Mae Whitman, Matthew Lillard, Manny Montana, and Retta. It debuts its fourth season on June 24.

Wilson was praised for his starring role as legendary jazz icon Louis Armstrong in the film Bolden. His other recent credits include a large guest star role in the HBO pilot A Lot alongside Whitney Cummings, Officer Downe with Kim Coates, and the Taken parody film Tooken opposite Lee Tergesen and Margaret Cho.

Wilson’s other movie credits include Mighty Joe Young, Rough Draft, Fallen, Crank and Crank: High Voltage.

Antonio Sabáto Sr., who had roles in an eclectic slate of films over a five-decades acting career, has died from Covid-19 complications at age 77, according to his son and fellow actor Antonio Sabato Jr.

His son said that the elder Sabáto was hospitalized in California on Jan. 4. “My papa/dad is in intensive care with covid in California,” he wrote. “Lord keep him surrounded by angels and pure God’s love and strength within.”

The elder Sabáto started his acting career in 1966 in the Italian film Lo scandalo. Later that year, he starred in Grand Prix, an American film with an international cast of actors. The film won win three Academy awards.

Netflix has acquired the worldwide rights to “Giving Voice,” a documentary about the August Wilson Monologue Competition that won the Audience Award at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

“Giving Voice” is directed by James D. Stern and Fernando Villena and follows six students as they advance through the monologue competition, which highlights the work of the playwright behind “Fences” and “The Piano Lesson” and allows winners the chance to perform at the August Wilson Theater on Broadway.

The documentary specifically looks at students from public schools pursuing careers in performance arts, and it uses Wilson’s words to focus on the black experience in America and how words and voices can be ignited to inspire change. Netflix plans to release “Giving Voice” later this year.

The streaming service has confirmed that “Hunters,” a new series from “Us” director Jordan Peele, will start its run this month. Al Pacino stars in his first TV series as a Nazi hunter working in 1977 New York City with a young crew led by Logan Lerman.

In addition, we get the second half of the first season of “Clifford” as well as the debut of a documentary series about the NFL team in the City of Brotherly Love, “All or Nothing: The Philadelphia Eagles.”

Also look for the premiere of the feature film “Honey Boy.” Shia Labeouf wrote this heartfelt film about his troubled childhood and plays a character inspired by his father.

Jordan Peele’s upcoming show “Hunters” is among the slew of new movies and TV series that will be added to Amazon Prime Video next month.

Peele executive produced “Hunters,” a drama following a group of Nazi hunters in New York City in 1977. The first season, created by David Weil, stars Al Pacino, Logan Lerman and Kate Mulvany.

On the film front, Amazon Prime will add a mix of critical favorites and popcorn flicks like “Dick Tracy,” “Magic Mike,” and “Precious.” Recently released movies such as “47 Meters Down: Uncaged,” “The Farewell” and “Honey Boy” will also become available to stream on the platform later in the month.

"We have to get out of the house before mom and dad come home!" Momentum Pictures has released the trailer for Mom and Dad, a wild 'n crazy action movie from Brian Taylor, one half of "Neveldine/Taylor" (of Crank, Crank: High Voltage, Gamer, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance). The concept for this is nuts - something starts making parents go crazy and kill their kids. Yeah, seriously, the opening act shows this and it's freaky. Two kids smarten up and try to safely evade their parents until the madness dies down. Nicolas Cage and Selma Blair star as the parents, and Anne Winters and Zackary Arthur as their kids. I saw this movie at the Sitges Film Festival and it's fun, in a very wicked way, but it's not that great. It's a quick, throwaway late night movie when there's nothing better to watch - and Cage's craziness fits perfectly.

Patton Oswalt defines the protagonist in Syfy’s new comedic thriller “Happy!” by referencing a classic buddy picture. “Remember in ‘Midnight Run,’ when Charles Grodin is telling DeNiro, ‘the reason you have an ulcer is that you have two modes of expression: Silence and rage’? That’s Nick Sax,” Oswalt told co-star Christopher Meloni, who plays the lead character. “It’s either glowering silence and then just explosive and it’s hilarious.”

It’s not a bad way to sum up the relationship between Meloni’s and Oswalt’s chatacters in “Happy!”, which premieres this Wednesday. But here’s the big difference: Rather than playing somewhat sane humans, Meloni stars as incredibly unstable private investigator Nick Sax, and Oswalt is the voice of Happy, a CGI flying unicorn who is either a figment of Nick’s imagination or the manifestation of a little girl’s imaginary friend.

Slipknot co-founder Shawn Crahan, a.k.a. “Clown,” and “Crank” co-director Mark Neveldine have brought Joe Casey’s “Officer Downe” to the big screen. Written by Casey himself, the film stars Kim Coates (“Sons of Anarchy”) as Officer Downe, a deceased police officer resurrected from the dead to keep fighting crime. Movies like The Accountant used to be a dime a dozen, or at least they felt like that, a simple action movie with a low-a-list or high-b-list actor just filling time in the schedule. Now it feels like all of these movies have become franchise entries instead, a safer attempt at the same money as star power has become less important and licenses have become king. The Accountant is a by-the-books action movie with a gimmick, the main character is supposed to have Asperger syndrome, and it relies on that gimmick and the charm of the cast. It’s an exceptionally charming cast, and it’s capable of pushing a rather cliché movie through all of the rougher parts. I like The Accountant despite the things it does badly and, maybe a little bit, because of them.

I’ve seen some variation of The Accountant’s story a million times.

There are movies that people love, there are movies that people hate. Perhaps the most fun? The ones that seem to divide people down the middle. Obscure Movie Stats has done a bunch of research, and reckons it’s come up with what it calls the most polarising movies of the century thus far. What’s more, three of the films that have made the top ten have been released in the last year too.

The 2016 Los Angeles Film Festival kicks off on Wednesday, June 1st, and this year’s Nightfall lineup looks to be yet another strong selection of genre films set to thrill festival-goers night after night.

Full disclosure: Abattoir was edited by my significant other, so I am certainly biased, but my enthusiasm for the film comes from my excitement to see Bousman return to the hardboiled world of horror after working on The Devil’s Carnival musicals and his comedy-infused segment in last year’s Tales of Halloween anthology.

It’s been 10 years since Neveldine/Taylor’s Crank was released. We look back at what might be Jason Statham’s best film...

Whenever we interview anyone for Den of Geek, we try to throw in a curveball of a final question by asking them, “What’s your favourite Jason Statham movie?” Obviously, there are plenty to choose from, but to date, the most common answer is Crank. Simon Pegg loves it. James McAvoy loves it. Rupert Grint loves it. The list goes on, and for good reason: it’s bonkers, and brilliant, and almost completely unique.

The contrivance that kickstarts Crank’s action is a great one: hitman Chev Chelios (The Statham, naturally) has been poisoned by a rival gangster, injected with a synthetic compound that blocks his adrenaline receptors. To stay alive, he’ll need to jack himself up with as many stimulants as possible.

We chatted to the Impractical Jokers about the TV and live shows, pranking and Jason Statham. Fair warning, things got foul-mouthed...

This one got away from me.

The cast of the television show Impractical Jokers (Sal Volcano, Joe Gatto, Brian ‘Q’ Quinn and James ‘Murr’ Murray) were in London for their first ever live UK performances and Den of Geek had managed to grab a little time with them ahead of the shows. In our excitement over what we expected would be a fun interview we had failed to consider the possible difficulties.

It turns out that interviewing four comedians at the same time is hard work. Typing up my recording afterwards was like trying to transcribe a riot. If a regular interview is like fishing (it’s not) then interviewing the Impractical Jokers was like attempting to lasso four octopuses with the same piece of rope.

If you’re looking for a good horror movie this Halloween weekend, keep looking. The demonic-possession subgenre isn’t exactly one crammed with quality cinematic experiences, but with The Vatican Tapes, it hits a dull, unscary new low.

This is a movie so inept that it doesn’t even have a protagonist, so there is no focus for what little story there is. Is this the tale of Angela (Olivia Dudley [Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension, Transcendence], who looks so much like Patricia Arquette here that I thought she must be a daughter or a cousin or something, but apparently not), who on her 25th birthday is suddenly taken over by Satan?...

Gogglebox for horror nerds? New BBC 3 series The Fear, starting tonight, showcases horror shorts by amateur filmmakers...

I like the idea behind new BBC Three show The Fear. A bunch of short horror films made by amateurs are shown to an audience, who then rate them based on how scary they are. The scariest three are then shown to a qualified judge who will choose a winner. I like horror films and I like the idea of amateur horror filmmakers getting their short movies shown on television. Right in time for Halloween, too.

Based on the preview, the show is a bit like Gogglebox for horror nerds. We meet the audience and see how they react and listen to them waffling on in the way that people do when there’s a camera pointed at them (not during the films, of course). With Mr Robot now available to stream on Amazon Prime, we chat to creator Sam Esmail about the 90s, geekdom and on-screen hackers…

First: an admission of incompetence. The most interesting question to put to Sam Esmail, creator and showrunner of the best new series to come out of the Us this year, only came to me on my way out of the interview, while stood on the lushly carpeted staircase of the Mayfair hotel hosting the Mr Robot junket. It’s this: how does Esmail’s show square its anti-capitalist, anti-corporate themes with a Us home on an NBCUniversal channel owned by multi-billion dollar corporation, Comcast, and now a UK home on Amazon Prime? Back in June, Jason Statham - who was said to be in the running to play Bullseye on season 2 of Daredevil at the time - riled up a lot of Marvel fans with his comments during a video interview. The Crank 2 actor said he "could take my grandma and put her in a cape, and then put her in a greenscreen, and then have stunt doubles come in and do all the action. Anybody can do it." Old-school action movie fans can probably identify somewhat with the point Statham was making, and so does Paul Bettany - but he couldn't help taking a little jab of his own when appearing on the Conan O'Brien show. "He's brilliant at what he does - I couldn't do it. I try to do as many of the stunts as I can, but there are times when it's too dangerous or it's too tricky.

Since his debut in Guy Ritchie’s 1998 film Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, actor Jason Statham has emerged in the past few years as one of the leading action heroes currently working, with his popularity being proven by the fact that the Transporter series, which he headlined for the first three films, has gone on to a tv show adaptation and will be rebooted in theatres next weekend with The Transporter Refueled. That’s not the only action franchise Statham has headlined, however, as he has also been the leading man in the Crank films and been a part of the Expendables franchise and, more recently, the Fast and Furious franchise.

Action heroes often have to throw lots of punches onscreen, and Statham has been no exception in this regard. Now the youtube channel Burger Fiction has put together a compilation of the numerous punches Statham has thrown onscreen...

You know the one about the young girl who gets possessed, nobody believes it, and someone of power has to perform an exorcism in the 3rd act? Sure you do. We get this movie or some variation therein, a few times a year. Sometimes it’s a demon, sometimes it’s a ghost, but it always ends up being roughly the same film outline. Popping bones and inhuman movement or contortion is a given, speaking in lounges, and there’s a fake out where you think the entity has left…But Not Yet! Before going any further I should say that yes, The Vatican Tapes is precisely one of these movies. The last time I caught one before this was last year’s Deliver Us from Evil, which came from Scott Derrickson. I didn’t care for that, but coincidentally Derrickson’s The Exorcism of Emily Rose was the last theatrical one I really enjoyed.

Another South Bank movie!

True. Back then, BBC Films was making niche films that were struggling to get made anywhere else. And here, with Man Up, a rom com seems to have become one of those niche films.

Absolutely, yeah. You make a very good point.

In 2009 my parents visited me in Los Angeles for the first time and I needed to show them a movie as the Arclight chain of theaters because I wouldn’t shut up about how great they were. There wasn’t anything out that we were dying to see so we saw the latest movie from Jason Statham more because we liked him than because we thought we would see a fantastic movie. That was the first time I saw Crank: High Voltage and it changed what I wanted from an action movie: pace above all other things. I want a movie to move as fast and damn the audience if they can’t keep up. Mad Max: Fury Road is the first movie since that feels like it is genuinely pushing at the limits of the genre and it makes for a truly impactful filmgoing experience.
