I'm a massive Tig Notaro fan, so I have been waiting for this to come out for a long time. I was so excited for this.
The movie is OK. It's not bad by any means, but it's not great either. It just didn't have anything particularly memorable or noteworthy to mention.
The best part was the Tig cameo.
I think I was expecting a lot more from this, but it sort of felt like it just never peaked.
I know a lot of people didn't like Dakota, but I didn't see anything particularly wrong with her in the movie. I'm not sure anyone else could've made this any better than it was. It's just an OK movie.
Again, it's not bad, it's just not as good as I had hoped.

Not only there's beauty in the honesty in which the film explores themes of self discovery in the life of Lucy (Dakota Johnson), a 32-year-old woman who comes to a realization of an inner part of herself that was dormant, but also in the depiction of friendship. Dakota Johnson and Sonoya Mizuno have the on-screen chemistry to successfully show the ups and downs of two best friends.
Dakota Johnson's wittiness is hilarious. Since those interviews with Jimmy Fallon some years ago, we know humor is something that comes effortlessly to her, and in this movie she proves once again she's really funny. The dynamics of the characters and how they tread unknown territory in their lives give the story an interesting take on social matters that isn't shown on-screen every day. This decision defies the complacency often found in comedies, making "Am I OK?" worth watching.

The lines "I think it's because you're afraid of getting close to someone for fear of rejection", but also "that's so lezz", are uttered in this movie.
Never too late to change your life's direction.. or to ponder in anxiety if where you are is right or not. You may think you have everything under control, only to soon be reminded that you just don't. But not-so-believable super friendships is always a start.
The movie feels "soft", and a tad obvious (or is it?), but the ending was fresher than I expected.
It certainly has a gloomy feeling (that is most probably on purpose), and a relatable "awkwardness in life" from the lead.. so I'd say it is well done! It accomplishes what it sets out to do.. although not sure about the strength of the message or even the way it delivers it. It's enjoyable, in a way, but not memorable at all. I'm feeling a "Beast of the Night" (by CATBEAR) out of 10.

Lucy (Dakota Johnson) and Jane (Soyona Mizuno) are best friends but Lucy is hiding a huge secret from Jane...
I will watch anything with Dakota Johnson in and she does not disappoint in this film. She plays best friend to Jane but they have a falling out and during their 'break' Lucy finds out something life changing. But Jane is going to London to work so they will be split up.
It's kind of a bestie film and a romcom and a coming of age all in one. But the dialogue is really on point and mature. Tig Notaro co-produced, co-directed and starred in the film and it certainly has her style of comedy stamped onto it. There are some real "Awwwww" moments but some real laugh out loud moments too as the two girls -with other people orbiting their lives- navigate their way through huge changes in their lives.
I really enjoyed it one rainy evening and give it a solid 6 for great entertainment and real life issues.

I like when films dare to talk about things that are rarely discussed in the cinema. Someone trying to figure out their sexual inclination and having their first brushes with the consequences of their decisions is quite interesting to watch. All of this elevated Am I Ok? To a promising film. And I say elevated, in the past tense, because then the script turns towards a lighter path, stained by the comedy and drama that we can normally see on every sidewalk, on every corner. It was a good start, for a lukewarm ending.
The performances could have been better. Dakota Johnson has never been a great exponent of her type of work. I celebrate the edition, but I object to the poor choices regarding the soundtrack and costumes.
Final thoughts, good movie if you're looking for something quiet that will provoke some conversations to reflect on, but it's not anthropological philosophy either. Decent movie.

This film is a mixture of already overused tropes mixed into one deeply bland presentation of a movie. The most lengthy 127 minutes ever. It's unclear what this film is about. It's marketed as a film about self discovery when it's actually a movie about friendship it's also unclear as to who the lead character is in this film. The Dakota Johnson self discovery plot is meant to be the lead character but at times it feels shoehorned in and like a subplot that was put in for reasons that aren't clear, I'm not sure there was any real need for this movie to exist. What was this supposed to be? Why was it necessary for this to be made?

Coming out isn't always an easy process, especially for anyone who has lingering doubts about his or her sexual orientation. However, given the prevailing conditions present in contemporary society, this gay comedy-drama from directors Stephanie Allynne and Tig Nataro stretches credibility where that notion is concerned. Thirty-two-year-old Angelino Lucy (Dakota Johnson) can't figure herself out sexually speaking. She's not particularly interested in men, as her sometimes-male companion, Ben (Whitmer Thomas), finds out, but she's not sure if she's genuinely attracted to women. She spends considerable time with her bestie, Jane (Sonoya Mizuno), a straight woman whom she's known for years but who is also about to relocate from Los Angeles to London for work, a development about which Lucy has mixed feelings. So, when Lucy at last opens up to Jane about her possible lesbian leanings, she does all she can to get her friend a date before she leaves for England. But, somewhat perplexingly, Lucy hesitates at every turn, fearful of what might transpire. And therein lies the problem with this film - it's just not believable. If this picture were made (or set) 40 years ago, when social acceptance of alternative lifestyles was more problematic, then it would probably come across as more plausible. But, given current conditions, it's simply not convincing. If Lucy were to live in an isolated conservative small town, it might be more conceivable, but she lives in Los Angeles, for goodness sake, where alternative sexuality is virtually a prerequisite for residency. Lucy's exaggerated whining about her reluctance to move forward grows tiresome, too, and it's easy to see why Jane loses patience with her. That's a problem compounded by Johnson's underwhelming performance, which is annoying and anything but persuasive. The script's humor is fairly thin, too, save for the laughs generated in cameo appearances by LGBTQ+ icons like Sean Hayes and Nataro, who delivers a positively hilarious performance as a deadpan New Age retreat facilitator. But the film genuinely could use more of these edgy narrative elements (along with greater overall believability) to succeed as a viable release. In fact, given Nataro's reputation as a source of outrageously sidesplitting comedy, this project is surprisingly tame and inherently more conventional than what one would expect out of someone so innately talented. The picture's aptly timed streaming release for Pride Month isn't at all unexpected, but it's genuinely unfortunate that this just isn't a very good movie. Gay cinema has come a long way in recent decades, but this offering feels like an anachronistic throwback to the early days of the genre. We've seen stories much like this before, but the LGBTQ+ community deserves something more inventive - and better overall - at this point.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. I wasn't aware of Sonoys Mizuno's work before, but she's clearly a star. I'm looking forward to other projects that she's in. But the entire cast is great. It's a story about two friends who share everything except the things that matter. But This movie takes you on a journey that you can feel because it makes you reflect on your own life. I was not okay after the movie because I had so much to think about; but maybe it's pre/mid life crisis time. However, if you watch this movie, you will find yourself entertained, laughing and wanting to watch it again. Excellent film.
I remember seeing a trailer for this and it sounded like a ROM-com for a new age. I feel like I was completely lied to in the trailer. Every other actor in this movie was watchable except Dakota Johnson. I wanted to give this movie the benefit of the doubt because I know Tig Notaro was involved. That was probably the funniest thing in the whole movie when she went to the hammock retreat. I couldn't make it to the end. I'm confused by the release date 2022. Was this movie on a shelf somewhere waiting to be released? And they finally got around to releasing it in 2024? No pity for this pity party.

If you're into the new fangled girl speak and girly besties then this may be a home run for you. But, I have my biases against these stereotypes. They tend to be rooted in selfishness and dishonesty. Period.
This tale is about a thoroughly self-centered, immature young woman who's self-obsessed and is anything but a friend to her bff. Whenever she gets the "devastating news" that her best bud is moving on to much bigger and better things she's anything but celebratory in her demeanor.
She, instead, uses the remaining days to ball up into this womb of self-pity and doubt. As she emerges she delves into a journey of self-discovery at "just the wrong time". How not quaint or appealing to this woman.

I hate to say it but the movies that HBO-Max is offering to their subscribers, such as me are lackluster! I gave this movie a watch, and I have to say it was very underwhelming, very slow moving, somewhat depressing and some of the casting was bizarre! Such as the boyfriend of Sonoya Mizuno was completely unbelievable, and the casting of the love interest for Dakota Johnson, the massage girl, Kiersey Clemons, was also unbelievable. Whoever did the casting for this movie did a terrible job! The premise of this movie is also underwhelming. In fact you wonder how does Dakota Johnson afford her apartment and her lifestyle with her modest job. Overall I give this movie a 4!

I haven't seen a lot of Dakota shows before, but the ones I've seen, this one sealed it for me, she's not very good. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say she's prob the second worst actress after Dallas Bryce Howard.
I wasn't really sure what to expect with a title called Am I OK? But knowing it's a lesbo coming out story. I thought it'd be maybe sad or a story of self discovery and finding her strength like gay coming shows. Nope, it's a story of a melancholy co-dependent friendship with the main character coming to the realization she might be gay. Even her discovery is boring along with her dating life.

Say what you will about Dakota Johnson, but for me, 2024 so far has been reminding me not to judge art (movies, in this case) by their covers/title cards. There's often more to something than meets the eye. I never paid much attention to Ms. Dakota Johnson as an actress - she got her big mainstream break in the Fifty Shades franchise, not known for being groundbreaking art - and yet, here she is surprising me this year, at every turn! She certainly has a unique charm to her, and I was drawn to this movie because I appreciate her deadpan sense of humor.
I wasn't expecting this one to be as awkward and funny as it was, but I really think it's a solid movie. Of course it suffers from typical Hollywood tropes...my favorite being that although Lucy (Johnson) works as a receptionist in a spa, we never see her checking in any clients. (Not even one!) Her best friend's job is equally unclear, but hey, she has a neat office at least.
Anyway, as a late-joining member of the 'Alphabet' community myself, I appreciated the representation of letter Q subgroup: Questioning/Queer.
Keep on keeping on, Dakota Johnson!

If this movie had come out in the early 2000s it MIGHT have been interesting. It is not an interesting movie in 2024, and even less so with Dakota Johnson as the lead.
It's not a bad movie per se, just an uninteresting movie with no payoff. And Dakota, once again, gives us an uninteresting performance. As a straight, hetero male, if she can't make lesbianism interesting to me, she should quit acting.
The production and directing were fine. Nothing great. The writing was boring. Boring dialogue and boring scenes. Just all around boring.
Not worth the effort to watch. Better coming of sexuality movies out there.

The film is well cast and there is a pseudo 90s sex and the city element to the story that works on some levels yet is not really anything new or special. The dynamic of the 2 main friends is interesting at first then it drags on into duller territory as a bestie film.
Dakota is a good actress yet it seems like her choice of roles and scripts are rather limited to test her scope beyond Fifty shades and this coming of gender role is cute and has its moments yet definitely is a film few are going to remember.
The guest appearance is rather short and brief and that was something that could have been expanded but overall it's a decent film just not anything fresh or interesting that makes one yearn for more and feels more like a made for tv film or Netflix show.
5 stars for Dakota and hope her next project is a better script than this one or Madame Web.

I know the description for this movie is about the character's journey with coming out but I got to say the tru winner here is the depiction of female friendship, specially between and introvert and an extrovert. I found it so funny and light and cute and special. And who knew Dakota can actually act when given good material and I'm glad we finally see her comedy chops. A darling movie to watch when you miss your friends and feel like a pick me up. Oh also the coming out is so real and I'm glad you can see a less vía actually wrote it. Anyway I loved the movie and would recommend it to people that like this type of light fun movies.

This film set itself up so well. It had some great characters and some great dialogue - but it had nowhere to go with it. It didn't know how to use them in an interesting way. It tried to force some drama halfway through with an awkward fall-out between the two leads, but i just feels extremely forced and more like an after-thought in the script than anything else.
I like Dakota Johnson, I don't care what anyone says. I find her very natural in her performances. A lot of the times it doesn't even feel like shes acting. She'll say something so casually that you wonder whether they just caught a behind-the-scenes conversation and decided to leave it in the final cut.
It's not a good sign when an 80 minute film is feeling like it's starting to drag. This one just needed another element to the story to flesh it out and keep the audience interested. 4/10.

The directorial debut of Tig Notaro and her wife Stephanie Allynne, Am I ok?, is now streaming on MAX and if you're looking for a good movie to watch this Pride season (or any time really), I recommend it! My wife and I are big fans of Tig Notaro's work so watching this was a must for us. The film stars Dakota Johnson as Lucy, a young woman in her early 30s who hasn't quite figured out her sexual identity yet and thus embarks on a journey of self-exploration.
The film was written by Lauren Pomerantz and it is semi-based on her real-life experiences. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and feel that it deserves more hype than it is currently getting. Pomerantz did a superb job in writing this story. In her writing, she makes the viewer see exactly how hard it is to struggle with your own identity. Someone very close to me recently made known her sexuality and this movie gave me a better understand of what she may have been going through.
Every once in a while, you get to watch a movie that not only entertains but also educates. Am I ok? Is a feel-good film that warms your heart but more importantly, it creates a voice for those who may be just like Lucy and haven't discovered who they are quite yet. I hope you get a chance to see this movie and enjoy it as much as I did.

Wow, this was so dynamic and felt so 90's in a way that I really miss! The rambling kind of drop in reality of how emotionally confusing life is, but with a but more structure. Almost like Say Anything... but for friendship. There is lots and lots of laughter and heart.
The negative reviews seem to focus on not liking the characters, which is fair because liking things is subjective, but seriously ignore them if you life an existential journey of growth. It reminds me of something me and my best friend went through like decades ago, so it's not just about todays trends.
Also just like, if you Love Tig and Stephanie, you will love this. Go watch it!

Stumbled across this movie tonight and was pleasantly surprised! Was a really good, light-ish chill movie, that still hit important issues. We were giggling throughout! The casting was great. The story feels real and relatable. It had so many different layers. Dakota Johnson played this character brilliantly and was fun to see her play this type of character! Sonoya Mizuno, she is hilarious. Could have played the story out more and added a little depth to the story lines but also was fine just the way it was. Im only saying this because I wanted the movie to go longer as i was enjoying it. Would definitely watch this one again!

I'm not a huge Dakota Johnson fan, but I gotta say, I kind of liked this film. The writing was clear and concise and I knew immediately which direction the film was going in. I didn't mind that. The relationship between Lucy and Jane actually reminded me of the relationship between my wife and I. I could very much relate to both of these characters. I liked the addition of Molly Gordon and Kiersey Clemons as Kat and Brittany, respectively and then to throw in Tig Notaro towards the end for some comic relief, genius! This certainly wasn't the worst thing I have seen recently and would probably watch it again with my wife if she wanted to see it!
