Problematic lyrics in music are not a new thing, the issue of portraying women in a bad light has been rampant in most famous raps. Several artists and fans have called out popular rappers and musicians for allegedly following the toxic trend of women-hatred in their songs.
However, there was one female artist who had guts bigger than the entire music industry combined. Back in the 90s, when rappers like Snoop Dogg and Suge Knight had gained prominence, their songs allegedly featured several misogynistic ideals. This annoyed popular singer Dionne Warwick, who took it upon herself to school the famous rappers and bring them back on track.

The story of Beowulf and Grendel is one of the most famous stories in English literature. The epic Beowulf is one of the most important works of English literature in general and it has been an inspiration for many authors over the centuries. We have also had numerous adaptations of the work, including the animated film from 2007, but all of them focused on the heroic tale of Beowulf, the hero of the story. But, the story also has another important character – Grendel – the monster and Beowulf’s rival in the story.
Grendel is finally going to get the chance to tell you his side of the story, as the movie Grendel will be released soon, with Palisades Park Pictures is launching international sales ahead of Cannes.
But that is actually not the main piece of news we have for you today. Namely, the cast of the upcoming movie has been...

Adam Fogelson is replacing Joe Drake as chair of Lionsgate’s motion picture group.
Drake reportedly initiated the transition and will be working with Fogelson over the coming months on succession plans. Drake, who was named co-chair of Lionsgate in 2017, will be leaving the company. He’s departing after leading the studio to its first billion-dollar year since 2019, thanks to commercial winners like “John Wick: Chapter 4” and “Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.”
“Despite unprecedented disruption over the last few years, we built a team that thrived throughout and achieved everything I could have imagined at Lionsgate,’ Drake said in a statement. “Having worked side by side with Adam for the past 18 months, he is the perfect choice to lead the motion picture group forward to even greater heights.”

We are officially in the last stages of the 2023 Summer Movie Season. A season dominated by one of the biggest toy brands in history and one of the most important human beings to ever live. As those films, Barbie and Oppenheimer, have dominated the charts for the better part of a month, this weekend sees the real test as Warner Bros goes to war with itself as they launch the latest DC film Blue Beetle. So the question is will the latest offering from the Dceu topple Barbie or will it land just shy of the biggest movie of the year?
When tracking for Blue Beetle hit the internet about a month ago, it was looking like an out and out bomb with a predicted $17 million opening. However just a few weeks later those predictions got bumped up to the $30 million range as analysts saw heavy pre-sales within the Latin American community.

There were always two sides to the Jim Henson Company during Henson's lifetime. On one of them, you have the puppets they created for "Sesame Street" and "Fraggle Rock," shows that are as wholesome and earnest as their googly-eyed stars. On the other one, you have the often frightening and twisted puppets that Henson and his crew invented for "The Dark Crystal" and "Labyrinth," as well as those for even creepier fantasy movies like director Nicolas Roeg's "The Witches." The Muppets, in case you were wondering, straddled the line between the two sides.
More than 30 years after its founder's death, however, Henson's legendary Creature Shop is now working on the "Five Nights at Freddy's" movie. As anyone even remotely familiar with the premise for the original "Fnaf" video games could tell you, Blumhouse's film adaptation is a far cry from even the darkest projects Henson's company developed under his watch.

There are any number of animated films released each year, often critically acclaimed and welcomed by the public, yet there are still very few works out there which really make use of puppets. Assorted Muppet ventures, Labyrinth and The Happytime Murders rely on supplementing them with live action performances. The Dark Crystal and its Netflix series prequel are widely celebrated for what they manage to achieve, yet have inspired few imitations – perhaps not surprising given the scale of work required. In 2021, Frank & Zed made an impact on the horror scene, but didn’t really have the writing to back up its craft. 2023’s Abruptio is something else, and suggests that the puppet film has finally come of age.

Get in line, because Cocaine Bear has made its way to Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital following a successful theatrical run. The “Maximum Rampage Edition” features several featurettes, including a fun audio commentary by director/producer Elizabeth Banks and producer (and Banks’ husband) Max Handelman.
Here are eight things I learned from the Cocaine Bear commentary…
1. The film opens with a Wet Hot American Summer reference.
Cocaine Bear opens to the tune of Jefferson Starship’s “Jane,” which many will recognize as the theme song to Wet Hot American Summer, the film in which Banks got her start. She explains:

FailArmy‘s new show is something a little bit different — and there will be puppets.
The enduring media brand, which wields its library of user-generated content to deliver the best “fails” to millions of consumers, is set to premiere its first scripted series. Womp & Co, from creator Dee Robertson, will blend workplace hijinks with Muppets to create an original comedy concept.
Robertson created the story for The Happytime Murders, the 2018 film that married R-rated comedy to the colorful Muppets of The Jim Henson Company. Compared to that project, Womp & Co will be less explicit, according to an email from a FailArmy rep. However, viewers can still expect “much more adult content” than what might be expected from long-time Muppet fans.

A consortium of investors led by Najafi Companies has closed its deal to purchase STX Entertainment, the beleaguered film and television company behind “Bad Moms” and “My Spy.” The sale ends STX’s unhappy union with Eros, the Indian media company that it merged with in 2020. The goal was to go public, which STXEros did, but to little investor fanfare. STX had previously tried and abandoned an effort to go public on the Hong Kong stock exchange in 2018, citing unfavorable market conditions.

Robert Simonds’ cash-strapped STX film studio, whose rare box office hits include “Hustlers” and the “Bad Moms” franchise, is trying to generate badly needed funds by selling off much of its 46-film library.
According to a regulatory filing on Wednesday, STX’s Mumbai-based parent company Eros STX Global Corp. said it “has entered into an exclusive negotiation period with a third party to monetize the revenue from 46 films in its library.” The company did not identify the prospective partner, and said the studio “will continue to administer and distribute the 46-film catalog for a fee, and will retain derivative rights to the 46 films, including sequels, remakes and prequels.”
The company said the money raised would be used to pay down its debt load — including a $150.1 million credit facility with JPMorgan that matures Oct. 7, as well as an additional $22.7 million in debt due in 2022.

Among the highlights was the original Jurassic Park and one of its sequels and if you missed them at the beginning of the week, you can also catch the likes of romcom 50 First Dates, animated film Monster House and the one and only E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. As for TV shows, all of Stargate was likewise added the same day.

The year is almost over. The Hargreeves kids have saved the world and Beth Harmon has checkmated her last opponent. But in its new releases for December 2020, Netflix still has some tricks up its sleeve.
For starters, Netflix is ending this most curious year with some promising original films. David Fincher’s long-awaited Mank arrives on Dec. 4 to fill us in on the story of Citizen Kane‘s screenwriter. Then on Dec. 11, Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, and James Corden do their best musical impression with The Prom. Chadwick Boseman’s final film Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom debuts on Dec. 18. Then George Clooney rounds out the month with The Midnight Sky on Dec. 23.
But of course, it’s in the original series realm where Netflix does most of its work. The biggest one comes at month’s end this December. The final season of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina premieres on New Year’s Eve.

Somehow, December starts on Tuesday even though it only feels like yesterday that the world was turning as normal and everyone was going about their business as usual before the Coronavirus pandemic came along and changed everything. As is the case every time we enter a new month, though, the various streaming services on offer are adding a whole host of new titles to their libraries and over the next seven days, Netflix has more than 50 movies and TV shows heading our way.
The list contains about everything you’d expect, from some all-time classics to several pretty terrible efforts that still stand a decent chance of cracking the Top 10 most-watched list, while there are even a couple of Adam Sandler films thrown in for good measure along with a handful of high-profile originals, and you can check out the full and exhaustive selection below.

I love when puppets are naughty. Ironically, I’m also a huge fan of the Muppets, who are somewhat more wholesome, but the concept has always thrilled me. As one of the few who enjoyed The Happytime Murders, I’m always down for a puppet engaging in some weird shenanigans. Now, we have Frank & Zed, a truly unique fantasy horror movie with puppets. A seven years in the making passion project, it’s utterly odd and incredibly gory, making for something you’ve almost certainly never seen before. Folks, if it sounds like something you’d be into, it’s one to truly be on the lookout for! The film is a horror flick, all done with puppetry. The protagonists are a pair of reanimated corpses, the Frankenstein-like Frank, as well as the zombie Zed. They’re both dependent on each other for survival, with a symbiotic friendship ensuing...

"As fun as it is scary." Yep, you read it right - this is a gory horror movie made entirely with puppets. Even though Brian Henson tried to make an R-rated puppet movie a few years back (The Happytime Murders), this one looks like everything that movie was not - much better and much more disgusting. Frank & Zed is a homemade passion project from filmmaker Jesse Blanchard. "It was shot in 4K in Blanchard's garage and a nearby studio and required the creation of 40 handmade puppets, miniatures, practical cloud tank effects, and actual fire." Badass. Lovingly crafted entirely with hand puppets, this hilarious, blood-drenched practical marvel sees the peaceful, secluded lifestyle of two monsters threatened when a group of desperate villagers come to repay an age-old pact to a wretched demon. Featuring the voices of Mandy Stockholm, Daniel Wagner, Jonathan McLain, Sam A. Mowry. And tons of gnarly puppets. I always enjoy these low budget,...

Happy 50th birthday, Melissa McCarthy! The actress is celebrating the major milestone of a birthday today, Aug. 26, and we're celebrating by reminiscing on her most iconic (and oftentimes hilarious!) on-screen roles, from the sweet, funny Sookie St. James on Gilmore Girls to the raunchy, unapologetic Megan on Bridesmaids. And while everyone might have a different favorite film or TV show of McCarthy's, we can all agree that she somehow manages to steal every scene she's in. Time and time again, she's proven herself to be one of the most versatile actresses working today! Seriously, she starred in The Happytime Murders and Can You Ever Forgive Me?...

Melissa McCarthy is set to star opposite Nicole Kidman in Hulu’s Nine Perfect Strangers, marking her first series-regular TV gig since Mike & Molly.
The limited series — which is based on Big Little Lies author Liane Moriarty’s book of the same name — takes place at a swanky health and wellness resort where nine frazzled city dwellers go to unwind. Kidman was previously cast as resort director Masha, “a woman on a mission to reinvigorate their tired minds and bodies,” per the official synopsis. “However, these nine ‘perfect’ strangers have no idea what is about to hit them.”

“The Dark Crystal,” the family-oriented fantasy drama directed by Jim Henson and Frank Oz, was groundbreaking when Universal released it in 1982. Now a cult classic, it offered an original blend of Brothers Grimm-style fairy-tale magic and state-of-the-art animatronic puppetry.
Now, 37 years later, Netflix and the Jim Henson Co. revive the world dreamed up by Oz and Henson with “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance,” a 10-episode prequel series directed by Louis Leterrier (“Now You See Me”) that revisits planet Thra and its mysterious inhabitants via tactile design, puppetry and hand-crafted effects.
“We wanted to make sure what we were doing felt right,” says Toby Froud, design supervisor on “Age of Resistance,” which drops Aug. 30. Froud has a long history with “Dark Crystal”: His father, Brian Froud, was the acclaimed concept artist on the original film, and Froud himself starred as the baby kidnapped by David Bowie in Oz and Henson’s follow-up project,...

Netflix has released a new featurette for their highly anticipated fantasy series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. It features the voice cast of the series including Simon Pegg, Taron Egerton and Natalie Dormer, as well as the creators discussing the return to Jim Henson’s creation and the opportunity they have to expand and build on the incredible fantasy world that Henson created. It also shows off some new footage!
The show is based on Jim Henson’s classic 1982 feature film The Dark Crystal. The story is set several years before the events of the original classic movie that many of us grew up watching. In this new story, “We find that the world of Thra is dying. The Crystal of Truth is at the heart of Thra, a source of untold power. “Good Boys” was quite a surprise for box office analysts this weekend. Riding off of strong reviews and audience word of mouth, Universal’s raunchy comedy about a group of sixth graders wading into the world of girls and hormones has earned a $21 million opening this weekend, nearly double the $11 million opening set by independent projections prior to release.
“It seems that Universal has cracked the comedy code and thus has been somewhat immune to the movie comedy curse by releasing a steady lineup of original and appealing comedies that have bucked the trend of audience indifference,” comScore’s Paul Dergarabedian told TheWrap.
It’s a win for comedy movies at a time when such success is becoming increasingly rare for the genre. But while other studios have contributed those occasional hits in the last three years — Warner Bros.’ “Game Night” and Lionsgate’s “Madea” series come to mind — the...

Universal’s “Good Boys” has done something that is becoming increasingly rare with its $21 million No. 1 opening at the box office. Not only is it the first original R-rated comedy in three years to top the box office charts, it is also only the second original film of any kind to open at No. 1 this year.
“Good Boys” was positioned by Universal to take advantage of this quieter August period after Spider-Man, Simba and Thanos have taken their share of summer moviegoers’ money. But Universal has also become a studio that has consistently found success with comedy at a time when so many titles in the genre have failed.
While a “Hangover”-level hit remains elusive, “Good Boys” joins films like “Night School,” “Ride Along 2” and the $115 million-grossing “Girls Trip” as Universal mid-budget comedies that have turned a profit in the last three years.

A great August for Universal continues this weekend with the release of “Good Boys,” an R-rated comedy that is surprising at the box office with an estimated $20.8 million opening from 3,204 screens. That will make the Seth Rogen-produced raunchfest the first R-rated comedy to top the charts since “The Boss” in April 2016.
On Friday, “Good Boys” earned $8.3 million and did well with audiences, earning a B+ on CinemaScore to go with its 79% Rotten Tomatoes score from critics. The film had been projected for a modest $11-12 million opening this weekend, but will now continue Universal’s streak of comedies like “Night School,” “Girls Trip” and “Blockers” as solid, mid-budget successes at a time when so many adult comedies have failed to take off in theaters.

Sony’s “The Angry Birds Movie 2” is hitting theaters nationwide today ahead of a late summer slate that includes Universal’s R-rated kid comedy “Good Boys” and a sequel to the shark-infested “47 Meters Down.”
Originally set for a Wednesday release, Sony moved “Angry Birds 2” to a Tuesday opening last week in an effort to bring in families in the last week before the majority of schools are back in session. Through six days, independent projections predict an opening of $22-25 million, while Sony is projecting a 6-day opening in the mid-teens from 3,800 screens.
Either result would be a big step down from the $38 million 3-day opening earned by the first “Angry Birds Movie” in May 2016, going on to make $107 million domestic and $357 million worldwide against a $73 million budget. The sequel has an only slightly smaller budget at $65 million and will face tough competition from family audiences with “The Lion King...

On paper, Warner Bros./New Line’s “The Kitchen” seemed to have a lot going for it, especially with box office draws Melissa McCarthy and Tiffany Haddish on board. But after poor reviews, Andrea Berloff’s directorial debut is flopping hard at the box office, grossing only $5.5 million from 2,765 screens in its opening this weekend.
Heading into the weekend, analysts who spoke to TheWrap said that an opening of around $10 million was expected. While far from a strong opening, it was at least projected to outperform Fox’s “The Art of Racing in the Rain,” which opened this weekend to just $8.1 million.

Universal’s “Hobbs & Shaw” led new releases and holdovers this weekend with $25 million grossed in its second frame, pushing the “Fast & Furious” spinoff to a 10-day domestic total of $108 million.
That result for the “Fast & Furious” spinoff is a 58% drop from its $60 million opening. While “Fate and the Furious” had a similar drop from its $98 million opening two years ago, “Hobbs & Shaw” is now falling behind the pace of “Mission: Impossible – Fallout.”
That Tom Cruise action film had a similar start to “Hobbs & Shaw,” opening in late July last year to a $60 million opening, but it held on better with just a 42% drop in its second weekend. “Hobbs & Shaw” is still looking to its release in China in two weeks, hoping to continue the “Fast & Furious”‘ winning streak in that country.

Melissa McCarthy has entered into early talks with Disney to star in the live-action adaptation of ‘The Little Mermaid’ as the sea witch Ursula.
‘Mary Poppins Returns’ helmer Rob Marshall is in the director’s chair for the live-action reimagining. Disney and the production team behind it are looking to make contemporary and compelling casting choices, while still paying homage to the beloved animated original.
The film will use some of the original songs from the 1989 animated hit as well as new ones from Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda. Miranda is also producing the film along with Marshall, Marc Platt and John DeLuca. David Magee wrote the script.

-The economics of running a successful independent film studio can be wearing. As former Relativity Studios head Ryan Kavanaugh said recently, “You’re on the edge at all times. You need $1 billion in cash a year just to keep it going, between releasing movies and making movies… it’s very hard.”
And he would know. Kavanaugh last year saw his company essentially fold, for a second time, joining the likes of Open Road and The Weinstein Company as independent studios to fade from view in 2018.
