CBS‘ single-camera comedy pilot Dmv has added Alex Tarrant (NCIS: Hawai’i), Tony Cavalero (The Righteous Gemstones) and Gigi Zumbado (Doctor Odyssey) in series regular roles.

They join the previously announced cast of Tim Meadows, Harriet Dyer and Molly Kearney.

Written by Dana Klein based on author Katherine Heiny’s short story, Dmv is a workplace comedy set at the place everyone dreads going most: the Dmv. Our quirky and lovable characters are making minimum wage, doing a thankless job where customers are annoyed before they even walk in the door. Good thing they have each other.

Tarrant will play “Noa,” a dreamy, charismatic, golden boy who seems destined for much greater things than working at the Dmv. He is good at everything and never gets into awkward situations. A star surfer, he lives the “Pura Vida” life and doesn’t sweat the small stuff.

Could 911 fans be saying "aloha" to a Hawaii-based spinoff? Here's what we know!

911 has become a steady hit with six seasons on Fox before it was surprisingly canceled by the network. More surprising was that at the same time, the show moved to ABC. It's rare for a show already an established hit to jump networks like this, but so far, it's paid dividends for 911. 

With ABC's much higher budgets, the show can afford bigger events like Season 7's cruise ship disaster and Season 8's "Beenado" and plane emergency. Season 7 was cut down to only ten episodes due to the 2023 Hollywood strikes while Season 8 looks to be a full 22 episodes.

A new 911 spin-off in the works

Sadly, 911: Lone Star is confirmed as ending with its current fifth season. The combination of lower ratings without the mothership 911 show and the big budget involved ended the spin-off while the original 911 is still going.

Exclusive: A new location has emerged as a leading contender to serve as backdrop for the anticipated second 9-1-1 spinoff in the works at ABC from Ryan Murphy and Tim Minear. According to sources, Hawaii is heating up as a potential setting for the offshoot, which, as Deadline reported earlier this month, has been picking up momentum after a lengthy gestational period. It is yet to be greenlighted.

During the gestational period, other places were considered to follow Los Angeles (9-1-1) and Austin (9-1-1: Lone Star), with Las Vegas at one point emerging as a favorite.

Viewership for CBS’ fall premieres soared when accounting for streaming and delayed viewing, with the “Matlock” series premiere reaching nearly 16 million viewers.

After first debuting on Sept. 22, the “Matlock” series premiere reached 15.8 million viewers across linear and streaming platforms within its first 30 days, according to VideoAmp and CBS Research estimates and internal streaming data (CBS and Nielsen are currently in the midst of an ongoing contract dispute).

Every TV season, there’s one cancellation that elicits a huge backlash and outrage from fans. In 2024, that was easily NCIS: Hawaii, as few could believe CBS canceled the series after three seasons.

Canceling any spinoff of the CBS franchise would be jarring. However, ending NCIS: Hawaii after only three years made no sense. The series was still doing well in the ratings, and the producers were blindsided as they had ended the year on a cliffhanger that was meant to set up a bigger season 4. It was more frustrating given the season had been delayed by the 2023 Hollywood strikes so not even a full year.

Despite this, fans have complained about how these minority characters have been underused. In a way, I see it. There is a lot of focus on Rob Lowe’s Owen Strand in every single episode. His son Tk gets a lot of attention as well—although, it’s worth pointing out that as a gay man, Tk is a minority character!

Now, the co-showrunners Jan Nash, Christopher Silver, and Matt Bosack have revealed what they would have done had Season 4 happened.

On Friday, TV Line spoke to the three NCIS: Hawaii showrunners, Jan Nash, Christopher Silver, and Matt Bosack, about the cliffhanger Season 3 ending, and what they planned to do in Season 4. After admitting that they were “obviously surprised” that this spinoff was canceled, they revealed that they would not have ended on a cliffhanger.

Just before the NCIS: Hawai’i Season 3 finale, it was announced that the CBS drama, part of a long-running, successful franchise, would not be returning. (It’s one of the cancellations of 2024 that hurt us the most.) And so fans were left with one major cliffhanger and a few loose threads that were never to be answered. Co-showrunners Jan Nash, Christopher Silber, and Matt Bosack have now given TVLine a few details about plans for a fourth season, if they had gotten one. In fact, the reason the series ended like it did is because they didn’t know that they wouldn’t be back. “If we’d known it was coming, we probably wouldn’t have ended the series on a cliffhanger,” they said.
