CBS‘ single-camera comedy pilot Dmv has added Alex Tarrant (NCIS: Hawai’i), Tony Cavalero (The Righteous Gemstones) and Gigi Zumbado (Doctor Odyssey) in series regular roles.
They join the previously announced cast of Tim Meadows, Harriet Dyer and Molly Kearney.
Written by Dana Klein based on author Katherine Heiny’s short story, Dmv is a workplace comedy set at the place everyone dreads going most: the Dmv. Our quirky and lovable characters are making minimum wage, doing a thankless job where customers are annoyed before they even walk in the door. Good thing they have each other.
Tarrant will play “Noa,” a dreamy, charismatic, golden boy who seems destined for much greater things than working at the Dmv. He is good at everything and never gets into awkward situations. A star surfer, he lives the “Pura Vida” life and doesn’t sweat the small stuff.

Could 911 fans be saying "aloha" to a Hawaii-based spinoff? Here's what we know!
911 has become a steady hit with six seasons on Fox before it was surprisingly canceled by the network. More surprising was that at the same time, the show moved to ABC. It's rare for a show already an established hit to jump networks like this, but so far, it's paid dividends for 911.
With ABC's much higher budgets, the show can afford bigger events like Season 7's cruise ship disaster and Season 8's "Beenado" and plane emergency. Season 7 was cut down to only ten episodes due to the 2023 Hollywood strikes while Season 8 looks to be a full 22 episodes.
A new 911 spin-off in the works
Sadly, 911: Lone Star is confirmed as ending with its current fifth season. The combination of lower ratings without the mothership 911 show and the big budget involved ended the spin-off while the original 911 is still going.

Exclusive: A new location has emerged as a leading contender to serve as backdrop for the anticipated second 9-1-1 spinoff in the works at ABC from Ryan Murphy and Tim Minear. According to sources, Hawaii is heating up as a potential setting for the offshoot, which, as Deadline reported earlier this month, has been picking up momentum after a lengthy gestational period. It is yet to be greenlighted.
During the gestational period, other places were considered to follow Los Angeles (9-1-1) and Austin (9-1-1: Lone Star), with Las Vegas at one point emerging as a favorite.
That has now shifted to America’s 50th state, we hear. Reps for ABC and studio 20th Television, which is behind the first-responder drama franchise, declined comment.
With its paradise-like tropical setting and many beaches, the allure of Hawaii is clear, and it fits the aspirational tone of Murphy’s broadcast fare,...

It was back to basics at this year’s MIPCOM, the world’s leading television market, which wrapped in Cannes this week, with buyers and sellers alike, still reeling from the 2023 Hollywood strikes and a sluggish advertising market, embracing a more conservative approach. The message was clear: the era of high-risk, big-budget productions is giving way to more practical, proven formats, both in scripted and non-scripted programming.
“People are looking for the tried and true,” noted Lisa Kramer, president of international content licensing for Paramount Global Content Distribution, which found eager buyers for their proudly mainstream procedural line-up, which includes the Kathy Bates Matlock reboot, the Elementry-esque medical detective series Watson and two spin-offs of its world-conquering NCIS franchise: the Euro-set NCIS: Tony & Ziva and the prequel series Origins.

Mark Harmon remains an important component of the NCIS Universe, even though he is no longer starring on the flagship show.
NCIS fans already knew Mark was part of the new prequel show, but nearly everyone thought it would only be behind the scenes. When NCIS fans tuned in for the NCIS: Origins season premiere, there was Mark, resuming the role television audiences have loved for years.
NCIS: Origins is a new show about Young Gibbs. CBS rolled out two episodes on its debut night, giving fans a lot of content to absorb.
Mark serves as an executive producer and the narrator for the show, as Leroy Jethro Gibbs tells stories from his past. Austin Stowell stepped in to play the Young Gibbs and made an immediate impact.

Exclusive: Johnny Cannizzaro (Jersey Boys) has joined the ensemble cast of 20th Century’s Bruce Springsteen biopic Deliver Me From Nowhere. The New Jersey native will portray Springsteen’s longtime confidant and E-Street band guitarist Stevie Van Zandt, sources close to production tell Deadline.
Cannizzaro will star opposite The Bear‘s Jeremy Allen White, who will bring “The Boss” to life in the feature film from director Scott Cooper. Odessa Young, Paul Walter Hauser and Harrison Sloan Gilbertson also star. Production is set to kick off in early fall.
Deliver Me From Nowhere, based on the Warren Zanes’ book of the same name, is set during a time when Springsteen, after grappling with personal demons and trying to wrap his arms around becoming a global superstar, wrote and recorded Nebraska, the 1982 album that rivals Joni Mitchell’s Blue as one of the most emotionally raw, dark and honest albums in recent music history.

In the old days of television, a series would start with a skeleton crew of regulars and fill in the gaps with supporting characters to fit the plot.
Character-driven episodes are coming back in an industry that has relied too long on attracting an audience with trending stars and episodes stuffed with too much going on.
After a disappointing, too-short season full of cluttered episodes and poor character development, a change of direction for the new Fall TV season is exciting.

Character-driven episodes are the new norm. But how will they affect the future of TV?
Let’s discuss.

If you’re lucky enough to have your favorite Primetime shows back on the air already, you might have noticed that the show is running on a limited cast.

It was May 17, 2017. The Plaza Hotel’s Food Hall and adjacent spaces over multiple floors were packed with people for CBS’ annual upfront party — an opulent display in the final years of broadcast dominance. Having won the lottery — beating the daunting odds of pilot season where hundreds of scripts vie for 20 so pilot spots and ultimately a handful of series pickups by a major network — the teams behind the new CBS shows were beaming. Except for the producers of military drama Seal Team, who were not in a festive mood.
The reason was an effort by CBS brass to replace the female lead opposite star David Boreanaz in the pilot, Jessica Paré. There was already a red flag for eagle-eyed attendees at the network’s upfront presentation at Carnegie Hall earlier that afternoon when the cast of Seal Team walked onstage sans Paré. NCIS: Hawaii Season 3 is now on DVD, so is it worth getting the final year for the spinoff?
Every TV season, there’s one cancellation that elicits a huge backlash and outrage from fans. In 2024, that was easily NCIS: Hawaii, as few could believe CBS canceled the series after three seasons.
Canceling any spinoff of the CBS franchise would be jarring. However, ending NCIS: Hawaii after only three years made no sense. The series was still doing well in the ratings, and the producers were blindsided as they had ended the year on a cliffhanger that was meant to set up a bigger season 4. It was more frustrating given the season had been delayed by the 2023 Hollywood strikes so not even a full year.
Now, the entire season is on DVD, so is it worth getting for fans?

NCIS fans are among the toughest TV viewers. During the franchise’s impressive two-decade run, we’ve experienced a lot of abuse, the latest coming in the form of yet another spinoff.
So is NCIS: Origins an inspired idea or an overused trope? It’s a fine line we’re currently straddling.
While NCIS has had better success with spinoffs than other series, the franchise is not immune to failure.
(Courtesy of CBS)
And while we love the NCIS universe, when will we decide we’ve had enough of the spinoffs and the expanded franchise? Regardless of when that time is, it’s not here in 2024.
After the sad news of a last-minute cancellation of NCIS: Hawai’i, NCIS fans are getting two new spinoffs, NCIS: Tony and Ziva in 2025 and NCIS: Origins, joining the CBS fall lineup along with NCIS Season 22.

It seems like 2024 is the year for NCIS fans, with several new series spinoffs to add to the roster.
NCIS loyalists may feel lost without original spinoffs NCIS: LA, which aired for 14 seasons, and NCIS: New Orleans, which was canceled in 2021 after seven seasons.
But we’re thrilled to see long-time agent Sam Hanna (LL Cool J) share the screen with his Hawaiian co-stars in the canceled spinoff NCIS: Hawai’i. And even better news is the new series spinoffs, NCIS: Syndey — renewed for Season 2 — and NCIS: Origins.
(Courtesy of CBS)
We’ll also enjoy the continuation of the love story between Dinozzo and David in NCIS: Tony and Ziva later in 2024-2025.
Here’s everything we know about the upcoming prequel, NCIS: Origins.
What is NCIS: Origins?
NCIS: Origins is a series that takes place in the 90s and follows Leroy Jethro Gibbs as he starts out as a rookie NCIS agent at Camp Pendelton.

Tom Selleck has openly criticized CBS for canceling his hit TV show Blue Bloods. However, it seems he has moved on. Recently, Selleck was seen out, and he looked almost unrecognizable from when fans last saw him on the hit police procedural.

Based on Carl Hiaasen’s 2013 novel of the same name, Bad Monkey is another Apple TV+ project developed from a published story.
(Courtesy of Apple TV+)
While that gives a series a leg-up by having a fully developed story to work with, that doesn’t mean the series is a sure-fire hit.
Bad Monkey has a lot going for it, but is it enough to overshadow certain aspects that don’t work?

NCIS season 21 is out on DVD and it has fun features that fans will enjoy. Not only will you get to relive the magic of all ten episodes, you can watch one episode that also features audio commentary from the cast and crew involved with the series.
Season 21, as you may recall, opened up with Agent Nick Torres dealing with an unwanted familiar face from his past. Almost immediately following, the team had to say goodbye to their beloved friend and colleague, Dr. Mallard. Even though the season was shortened due to the writer’s strike, it still provided us with plenty of stories about each of the characters.
With the ending of the season leaving some character journeys in question, the DVD is a great way to relive the magic of season 21 before NCIS season 22 debuts on October 14, 2024.

The latest update about NCIS: Hawaii's future amid fans' clamor for Season 4 renewal is quite disappointing.
In April 2024, TV Line reported that CBS canceled NCIS: Hawaii after three seasons on the network. The cancelation came several weeks after NCIS was renewed for Season 22.
The Hollywood Reporter then shared that the real reasons behind NCIS: Hawaii's cancellation was the show's poor viewership and the crowded lineup of NCIS shows.

While many TV shows are focused on straight, white characters, 911: Lone Star made it clear that there would be more minority characters. Even when it comes to the straight, white men, there are elements to their characters that we wouldn’t usually see on the screen.
Despite this, fans have complained about how these minority characters have been underused. In a way, I see it. There is a lot of focus on Rob Lowe’s Owen Strand in every single episode. His son Tk gets a lot of attention as well—although, it’s worth pointing out that as a gay man, Tk is a minority character!
The show has certainly underused Carlos. Out of all the characters, he’s usually there for Tk’s personal storyline or he was there for Liv Tyler’s Michelle’s storyline in the first season. His work wasn’t really the focus,...

Just before the NCIS: Hawai’i Season 3 finale, it was announced that the CBS drama, part of a long-running, successful franchise, would not be returning. (It’s one of the cancellations of 2024 that hurt us the most.) And so fans were left with one major cliffhanger and a few loose threads that were never to be answered. Co-showrunners Jan Nash, Christopher Silber, and Matt Bosack have now given TVLine a few details about plans for a fourth season, if they had gotten one. In fact, the reason the series ended like it did is because they didn’t know that they wouldn’t be back. “If we’d known it was coming, we probably wouldn’t have ended the series on a cliffhanger,” they said. We finally know when NCIS: Origins will debut on CBS.
This new prequel show from the NCISverse will debut in the fall.
Unfortunately, it takes over the timeslot that NCIS: Hawai’i aired in.
CBS canceled NCIS: Hawai’i midway through Season 3, so NCIS: Origins will now air after new NCIS episodes.
The early ratings will be interesting, especially since Mark Harmon is heavily involved in production.
Mark used to play Leroy Jethro Gibbs on NCIS, but he left the show, and his character retired to Alaska.
Fans still hope Gibbs will return to NCIS before the series ends.
Mark now serves as executive producer and the narrator for the new drama.

When the Nielsen streaming charts for the week of June 3 were revealed Monday, the overall ranking was led by Your Honor which originally ran for two seasons on Showtime from Dec. 2020 until March 2023. The legal thriller starring Bryan Cranston, which has been streaming on Paramount+, was No. 1 by a wide margin, amassing 1.5B minutes viewed in its first full week of also being available on Netflix in the U.S.
Your Honor, from CBS Studios and studio-based Robert and Michelle King, joined on the list perennial Nielsen Top 10-er, long-running CBS/CBS Studios procedural NCIS, which also streams on Paramount+ and Netflix, as well and another CBS Studios drama from the Kings that has been a recent staple on the Originals Nielsen chart, Evil, with its current Season 4 on Paramount+ supplemented by the first two seasons streaming on Netflix.

The NCIS: Hawai’i fans still aren’t giving up.
Despite the show getting canceled midway through its third season, the fans want more.
As the season finale approached, the fans made a concerted effort to create online petitions and share their love of the show on social media.
Unfortunately, it didn’t work then, and CBS replaced NCIS: Hawai’i with NCIS: Origins in the same time slot.
NCIS: Origins is a new show set in 1991 that shows the early days of Leroy Jethro Gibbs and Mike Franks on the job.
But these NCIS: Hawai’i fans aren’t giving up yet.

Even though NCIS has been on the air for more than two decades, fans still cannot get enough of the iconic procedural and all of its offshoots. The show was created back in 2003 and has since launched 4 separate spin-offs with 2 more on the way in 2025. However, not all of them are as popular as the others.
Of course, many people have high hopes for NCIS: Origins and NCIS: Tony & Ziva, but before these two shows arrive on our screens, you can always revisit older shows. Here are all of them, ranked by audience score on Rotten Tomatoes from not worth your time to absolute gems.
NCIS: Sydney (2023-...) – 27%
Even though the franchise was very excited to introduce another spinoff and expand overseas, the concept of bringing NCIS to Australia simply did not work. Even though the show follows the same template as the other spinoffs, many Aussies can attest...

NCIS: Hawai’i has been officially gone for a couple of months now, but one of its lead characters still has a major reason to return to the franchise’s original show.
Canceled in April, NCIS’ most successful spinoff was caught off guard just like its fans and ended on a big cliffhanger that suggested there was something big and important coming in Jane Tennant’s way.
Despite the disheartening ending that still torments the show’s fans, Jane Tennant and whatever she heard as a big news may still have a chance to make a comeback via the original series, though this time the reason for it doesn’t have much to do with her job.
Should the news prepared for her in NCIS: Hawai’i’s season 3 ending concern whatever happens in the head department, Vanessa Lachey’s Jane Tennant may come back mostly due to her desire to give...

NCIS’ season 22 is probably CBS’s most anticipated arrival ever since the franchise’s latest installment that left so many things unclear about Jessica Knight and her future at the McRt.
Let’s be honest though, Jessica’s storyline risks losing one of her biggest achievements anyway, whether it's her new position she’s always dreamed of or her relationships with Jimmy Palmer, which is also a major sacrifice for the series’ entire run.
Instead, I’m much more curious about how things will turn out for Nick Torres and whether all those bright perspectives are indeed coming for him in the upcoming season.
Nick Torres’ Character Development in NCIS Is Something Else
Introduced in NCIS’ season 14, Nick Torres has come a long way to finally resolve all the issues that impeded him to be comfortable even at his workplace. Though nobody caused him any big trouble, the character still...
