Jenny Agutter played Roberta (nicknamed Bobbie) in both the mini-series The Railway Children (1968) and the film The Railway Children (1970). Additionally, she played the role of the mother in the TV-movie The Railway Children (2000).
During a press interview, Jenny Agutter said she was pleasantly surprised to discover that one of the real train drivers in this film is the 41-year-old daughter of the driver of the train in the 1970 film.
Richard (the stationmaster) is seen buying a duff battery at the beginning of the film. In the 1920s, 30s & 40s battery run radios (as opposed to mains) were commonplace in the UK. Flat batteries were taken back to a radio dealer or electrical shop and part exchanged for a newly charged one. This practice changed in the 1950s as transistors replaced valves in home electronics making radios cheaper, smaller and more economical to run plus mains electricity became available in the more rural areas of the country.
