The movie started production in 2007 (before the fourth season), so none of the storylines from the fourth season are present. The script was written directly after the first film and before Season 4. It is intended as a follow-up to the first movie.

Helia is seen with his original hairstyle from Seasons 2 and 3 while in Season 4 he changed his hairstyle shortly before the Winx earned their Believix, in the same episode.

On February 19, 2013, Nickelodeon held a special screening of the movie at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. Nickelodeon star Daniella Monet (who voiced Bloom's rival, Mitzi) and Winx Club creator Iginio Straffi both attended the premiere.
