“It’s an epic story of a man’s life,” says “Patrick Melrose” producer Michael Jackson. The title character is “a man with a secret, a man with a problem that he needs to solve, and a man who’s incredibly dysfunctional for most of the story.” But in the end “there’s a certain potential redemption.” We chatted with Jackson and writer David Nicholls on the red carpet at the April 25 Hollywood premiere for the new Showtime limited series, which took place at the historic Linwood Dunn Theater. Watch our exclusive video interview above.

And so we’ve arrived at an ultra-rare Tuesday national holiday in the States. For some, that means an extra-long holiday weekend. Others might be taking advantage of the day off by watching the Coney Island hot dog-eating contest and then departing from the living room for the remainder of the day.
But for those who will remain glued to the couch on this July 4th, the world of TV has once again provided a treasure trove of non-stop programming. By our count, 36 networks are devoting significant amounts of their Independence Day airtime to a single series. In the spirit of comprehensiveness and giving everyone an equal chance to join in on the fun, here’s a list of this year’s TV marathons, arranged by how well they’ll add to the quality of your holiday.

The weekend of July 4th is a time for doing American things: grilling, watching fireworks, ignoring zoning restrictions and setting off your own fireworks. But shenanigans are tiring, you know? The sun will give you a sunburn. The grill will make your clothes smell like smoke. We at EW much prefer to test our endurance in other ways, mostly by watching TV.
There’s a whole set of marathons on for the weekend, some highly publicized (can you make it through three straight days of The Walking Dead?), some obscure and ready for love (a marathon of the animated Transformers series,...

Probably the most refreshing thing about Mankind: The Story of All of Us is that it is the first program put out by History in a long time that actually concerns history, not hearsay about aliens or other less than reputable topics. If anything, the series seems to be trying to make up for that deficit in the rest of History’s programming, so jam-packed it is with information. From the producers of the similar America: The Story of Us, Mankind covers every aspect of the history of humanity, from ancient Mesopotamia through to the present day. Each episode focuses on a particular topic that defines the human race or has played a particular recurring role in our history; from "Inventors" to "Warriors," "Revolutions" to "New Frontiers", these themes are delved into with painstaking detail. Nearly all of said information is legitimately very interesting, though the terrible reenactments that History...

New York — CBS is getting a bigger bang out of its most popular comedy.
"The Big Bang Theory" set a series record with 17.6 million viewers last week, the Nielsen Co. said Tuesday. The Thursday night comedy, now in its sixth year on the network, was second only to NBC's Sunday night football game in popularity for the week.
The show, about four geeky technology institute workers, an aspiring actress and their friends, is in its third year on CBS' Thursday night schedule. Its reruns are very popular on TBS and appear to be fueling interest in original episodes.
It was a big CBS week in the ratings. Eight out of the top 10 scripted shows were on CBS, with ABC's "Modern Family" and "Castle" the only two exceptions.
The broad-brush miniseries "Mankind" seems to be a rare misfire for the usually hot History network. Its first episode had 2.1 million viewers last week,...

Remember that song from Mary Poppins, “A Spoonful of Sugar”? The History Channel built a brand on it. Then, over the last decade or so, the network (which is now called just History, but we'll use its old name to avoid confusion) upped the ratio, to the point where they aren’t giving us spoonfuls of sugar with our informational medicine, but hiding the pills in two liter vanilla milkshakes smothered with chocolate sauce, whipped cream and sprinkles. Exhibit A is Mankind: The Story of All of Us, which debuts tonight.Actually, maybe I should refer to it as Exhibit B, because it’s a kinda-prequel to 2010’s America: The Story of Us. It has many contributors in common and employs the same aesthetic, which could be summed up as Education: The SuperBowl Trailer. A narrator (the somewhat dude-sounding Josh Brolin, replacing Liev Schreiber) summarizes technological developments that drove, and were driven by,...

No one disputes that women have a long way to go in achieving equal status in broadcasting and film. But it is also easy to fall into the trap of whinging about unfairness, rather than saluting those who win through.

Tree Of Life (20th Century Fox) Terrence Malick’s latest effort is both the best film of 2011 and the finest work of his (arguably) mixed, but often masterly canon. A series of vignettes, mostly set in 1950s Texas, capture the memory of a man (Sean Penn) in present-day New York who looks back on his life, and his parents’ (Brad Pitt, Jessica Chastain) troubled marriage, when word of his younger brother’s suicide reaches him. Almost indescribable beyond that, except to say no other film in history so perfectly evokes the magic and mystery of the human memory, which both crystalizes (and sometimes idealizes) the past. Like Stanley Kubrick’s 2001, this is a challenging, polarizing work that you must let wash over you. If you go along for the ride, you’re in for a unique, rewarding cinematic experience. Also available on Blu-ray disc.

The History Channel’s four-disc, 12 part DVD series America: The Story of Us tells the story of America, from its beginnings as a colonial settlement to the superpower it is today. The Story of Us weaves together personal stories through specific major events, giving the film/documentary an almost folksy view of American history.
Narrated by Liev Shreiber, the documentary begins with the first English colonists coming over for gold as they hear about America being painted as a land of opportunity and promise, but very unforgiving. Harsh weather, struggles with natives, lacking a food supply, inability to populate their new home in the beginning left many settlements bereft of more than half of the original members after just a short while. But as the American spirit would dictate, perseverance trumped failure and the colonists forged ahead. The Story of Us uses guest appearances from Donald Trump, Michael Bloomberg, Rudy Giuliani,...

The Music Room (Criterion) Satyajit Ray’s 1958 masterpiece looks at the life of a fallen aristocrat as a metaphor for an India that is not only becoming Westernized, but modernized technologically and culturally beyond recognition. When the beloved music room, where he has hosted lavish concerts in the past, starts falling into disrepair as attendance drops steadily, the man realizes his way of life is vanishing. Stunningly shot in black & white, one of Ray’s finest works. Los Angeles -- As a kid in the 1960s, reality TV king Mark Burnett was thrilled by the special-effects miracle of a sundered Red Sea in "The Ten Commandments."
"How cool was that?" said the producer of "Survivor" and "The Apprentice," who watched Cecil B. DeMille's 1956 film when it aired on television.
Now it's Burnett's turn to wow a small-screen audience with epic Scripture stories: He and his wife, actress Roma Downey, are producing the 10-part docudrama "The Bible" for the History channel.
It's set to air in 2013, History channel President Nancy Dubuc said Tuesday.
The series will combine live action with computer-generated imagery to retell stories ranging from Noah and the Ark to Exodus to the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. Shooting is planned for the Middle East and elsewhere.

The History Channel has gotten considerably more innovative with its programming lately, and America: The Story of Us is its most ambitious venture yet. Conceived as a latter day Roots for the American people as a whole, and probably meant to capture the zeitgeist engendered after the election of Barack Obama (who provides the introduction here), America is an epic retelling of our nation’s history from its earliest beginnings as a haven for religious dissidents up until the present day. But for all its pomp, energy, and good intentions, America is precisely that: a retelling, rather than a discovery of any kind. It is always engaging and cohesive (no small feat for such a huge timeline), but it’s more than a little lacking that most American of qualities, piss and vinegar.
America is divided up into 12 segments, each of them about forty minutes in length. With names like “Heartland,...

The Exploding Girl -DVD Review
Bradley Rust Gray has made a film that champions life and love the way it happens, unfolds, and dissolves: slowly.
All you really need to know about this film, which stars Zoe Kazan as Ivy, a girl you wish you could have known throughout your own formative years, is that it is really an intimate portrait of a woman who has a boyfriend waiting for at the college she’s currently attending, she is coming home for spring break, and she is connecting with her old friend Al (Mark Rendall).
What happens after these two re-connect after having been away from one another for a while is the basis for what can only be called one of...

While perhaps July 4th would have been the best time to release "America: The Story of Us" on Blu-ray and DVD from History Channel/A-and-e Home Entertainment, this ambitious 12-part series stands on its own without the need of a national holiday tie-in. Produced by the same team that created the compelling "Planet Earth," this look at American history drew six million viewers for its premiere, record-setting for the channel. In a time when our economy continues to falter and hope wanes, this is a reminder that if we look to the core of what built America, we can be great again as the series...

Overall it's a pretty jam-packed DVD release day, although you wouldn't know it to look at just the few high profile movies hitting stores today. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is the big one, along with summer snoozers Just Wright starring Queen Latifah and Letters to Juliet starring Amanda Seyfried. Indie releases include Werner Herzog's My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done, Ken Loach's soccer dramedy Looking For Eric, and Thai action film Raging Phoenix. On Blu-ray, there's plenty of genre goodness like The Twilight Zone: Season 1, Return of the Living Dead, and Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and a ton of TV releases, including Fringe, Glee, Bored to Death and Tim & Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!. Do you see anything worth buying or renting anything this week? Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time [1] (+ Blu-ray [2]) Just Wright [3] (+ Blu-ray [4]) Letters to Juliet [5] (+ Blu-ray [6]) Boogie Woogie...

Although a documentary and a biopic focusing on reggae singer Bob Marley have both risen and fallen a couple times in Hollywood, yet another attempt to tell he singer's life story is on the way. Deadline reports Jenny Ash, who recently found success with the doc series "America: The Story of Us," is developing a Bob Marley biopic focusing on the year that the singer spent living in London in 1977. This time in his life isn't just a random choice, but is regarded as one of the most crucial in his life following fleeing Jamaica after someone tried to kill him. Towards the end of his year in London came the revelation that he had cancer. In between there's plenty of life in his story involving The Sex Pistols, a love triangle and much more. With as much love as there is for Bob Marley out there, not just ...

UK director Jenny Ash ("America: The Story of Us") is developing a biopic of reggae legend Bob Marley for Greenacre Films says Deadline.
The story will concentrate on the year Marley spent living in London in 1977 after he fled from Jamaica in the wake of an assassination attempt.
During that year he started an affair with just crowned Miss World Cindy Breakspeare, performed his legendary Rainbow Theatre gig, hung out with the Sex Pistols, and sustained a soccer injury which eventually triggered full-blown cancer.
The focus of the story will be on the love triangle between Marley, his wife Rita and Breakspeare. One big catch however is that the filmmakers don't have rights to the songs yet which Rita Marley controls.

Freshman series "Glee" and "Modern Family" seem to always be at odds during awards shows, and this season's Television Critics Association Awards is no exception. Both shows are up for Acheivement in Comedy, Program of the Year, and New Program.
Jane Lynch is also nominated individually as the only female candidate for Individual Achievement in Comedy. (Hello, Julie Bowen?) "Modern Family" men Eric Stonestreet and Ty Burrell are amongst her competition. Nick Offerman, who many considered to be subbed by the Emmy voters this season, and Jim Parsons round out the category.
Other shows that have gone unrecognized by the Emmys this year, but which appear on the TCA nomination list include "Sons of Anarchy," "Parenthood" and "Party Down." The lifetime achievement award will go to James Garner, Bill Moyers, Sherwood Schwartz, William Shatner, or Dick Wolf. The full list of nominees is below.
