Broadway’s pop-injected Romeo and Juliet revival opened at New York’s Circle in the Square Theatre earlier this month but took a detour last night to unravel on the stage at The Tonight Show With Stephen Colbert. Rachel Zegler brought her leading role as Juliet to the performance of “Man of the House” with assistance from Jack Antonoff, who wrote and produced music for the production.
With Antonoff on piano and the cast of Romeo + Juliet backing her, Zegler delivered a tender performance of the aching ballad. “Do you have doubts?...

Rachel Zegler and Jack Antonoff have shared a new collaboration, “Man of the House,” from the new Broadway production Romeo + Juliet.
The latest revival of the classic Shakespeare tragedy stars Zegler as Juliet and Kit Connor as Romeo. And while it’s not an out-and-out musical, it does feature a few new songs from Antonoff. “Man of the House” is the first offering from the show and was co-written with singer-songwriter Ryan Beatty.

As a setting for a TV show, fashion is a little like the restaurant industry: a rich, untapped source of detail and conflict, hindered by the logistical complexity of bringing its insular world to the screen. And just as “The Bear” was preceded by a legion of competitive reality shows, plus a misbegotten adaptation of Anthony Bourdain’s “Kitchen Confidential” starring a young Bradley Cooper, the French drama “La Maison” is the latest of many attempts to make couture into compelling drama. “Project Runway” remains an unscripted institution, but recent scripted efforts have ranged from dutifully reverential (“Becoming Karl Lagerfeld”) to confoundingly inept.
Unlike these earlier series, which fictionalized the lives of icons like Yves Saint Laurent and Coco Chanel, “La Maison” gives itself the freedom to take liberties. Perhaps relatedly, it’s by far the strongest of the recent efforts to graft fashion onto entertainment. Created and showrun by...

John Malkovich was stunned when Harvey Weinstein was finally sentenced to prison. The once-untouchable Hollywood powerhouse, a figure long linked with abuse and unchecked power, seemed almost immune to accountability. Malkovich’s reaction highlights just how improbable Weinstein’s conviction once seemed, even with the overwhelming evidence and the powerful momentum of the #MeToo movement.

The shockwaves of the scandal were felt deeply, and Malkovich’s candid reflection on the situation underscores the gravity and impact of this turning point in Hollywood’s history.

Jason Momoa And Dave Bautista Buddy Comedy The Wrecking Crew Still Happening — Claes Bang Joins Cast
It's hard to believe it's been almost three years since we first reported that Dune and See co-stars Dave Bautista and Jason Momoa are set to team up on buddy comedy The Wrecking Crew. But now, at long last, we've finally got an exciting new update on the movie that started with a tweet (see below). Per The Wrap's reporting, the Ángel Manuel Soto (Blue Beetle) helmed film has found its lead villain in the shape of The New Look and Bad Sisters star Claes Bang.
Momoa and Bautista's See Season 2 showrunner Jonathan Tropper, who's recently landed gigs writing both Shawn Levy's new Star Wars movie and Chris Hemsworth Apple sci-fi The Corsair Code, has written the script — completed before last year's WGA strikes — for this one. Danish star Claes Bang, best known for playing the leading role of Christian in Ruben Östlund’s 2017 film “The Square,” has been cast opposite Dave Bautista and Jason Momoa as the villain in “The Wrecking Crew” for Amazon MGM Studios.
The project began with a tweet from Bautista back in 2021, which quickly snowballed into an actual movie (see tweet below).
Just going to throw this out into the atmosphere and see what happens. Here we go… Me and Momoa in a Lethal Weapon type buddy cop movie directed by David Leitch. Ok! There it is. Now we wait.
— Dave Bautista (@DaveBautista) August 19, 2021
After the project was assembled, it landed at MGM. The only thing different from the tweet was that instead of landing “The Fall Guy” director David Leitch, the directorial duties would be handed to Ángel Manuel Soto, who directed “Blue Beetle” for Warner Bros. and DC.

Once again, the Emmy Awards nominations don’t include a slew of TV favorites. Among the most notable snubs: Emma Stone for Best Drama Actress and a complete shutout of her Showtime series “The Curse.” Equally surprising was “Shogun” supporting actresses Moeka Hoshi and Fumi Nikaido missing the ballot. On the comedy side, Netflix’s “The Gentlemen” missed for Comedy Series and a forecasted bid for its star Theo James. And although “The Bear” had a solid morning overall, Abby Elliott wasn’t able to ride the wave of fortune in Best Comedy Supporting Actress. Oliver Platt and Matty Matheson were also snubbed on the Supporting Actor side.
Below, we enumerate the top 50 Emmys snubs in our estimation. These were the shows and performers that we thought had a strong chance to number among this year’s nominees. Let us know if there are others missing from this list that...

A Hulu drama series featuring Kim Kardashian has lined up some A-list talent to star opposite the reality TV mogul.
Halle Berry and Glenn Close have joined the cast of All’s Fair, a legal drama from megaproducer Ryan Murphy and 20th Television. The pair will also be executive producers alongside Murphy and Kardashian.
Per usual with Murphy’s shows, details about the roles Berry and Close will play are being kept quiet for now. Even though Game of Thrones ended only 5 years ago, back in 2019, many people were so devastated about the way the writers decided to finish the story, they tried to forget about it altogether. And while many fans have since returned to their screens for the prequel, the actors have moved on with their lives and careers.
One of the younger, but definitely not the weaker ones, Arya Stark has captivated many viewers’ hearts with her journey to become a cold-hearted assassin. The Savannah College of Art and Design is again bringing a generous helping of Southern hospitality to France’s Luberon Valley for the Scad Lacoste Film Festival, which runs June 27 to 29. Now in its third year, the fest was conceived as a top-up highlight for college students doing their semester abroad at Scad’s sumptuous campus in Lacoste, an inexcusably picturesque medieval village in the heart of Provence.
“[Scad founder and president] Paula Wallace always wants to make sure our students have access to the best of everything,” says Christina Routhier, executive director of Scad Theaters and Festivals. “The focus [at Scad Lacoste] is on film majors: acting, directing, production, costume design. So it was a perfect fit to bring in a film festival.”
The event is a complement to the school’s long-running main fest in Savannah, Georgia, which runs Oct. 26 to Nov. 2. Attracting talent to Lacoste, with its Instagram-ready cobblestone streets and lavender fields, hasn’t been a problem.

Having trouble predicting who will win Best Drama Actress at the upcoming Emmy Awards? Let’s consult Gold Derby’s 2024 Emmy Experts! These savvy pundits from major media outlets have chimed in with their predictions, and the majority of them believe the trophy will go to Anna Sawai (“Shōgun”). The other potential nominees, per our current racetrack odds, are Imelda Staunton (“The Crown”), Emma Stone (“The Curse”), Jennifer Aniston (“The Morning Show”), Juliette Binoche (“The New Look”) and Carrie Preston (“Elsbeth”).
As of this writing, a leading six out of our 17 Emmy Experts predict a victory for Sawai: Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby), Clayton Davis (Variety), Dave Nemetz (TV Line), Eric Deggans (NPR), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby) and Peter Travers (ABC). She plays Toda Mariko, a Japanese translator who has an allegiance to Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada). Sawai shared in the ensemble prize at last year’s Spirit Awards for “Pachinko,...

When Donald Glover first approached showrunner Francesca Sloane about adapting “Mr. & Mrs. Smtih” for Amazon Prime, she “started laughing,” and thought it was a “weird Donald Glover joke that he randomly spit out.” She was confused as to why he would pick the 2005 action-comedy of all movies, but as the conversation evolved, the project began taking shape in her mind.
“We discussed why people get married, what is it like to fight for somebody, how would it be to take this big blockbuster hit and use our sensibilities of quiet moments and filter that throughout the series,” Sloane explained. “And also, what is it like to have a woman run and write this show in such a masculine-charged genre? So, it started to sound like something that made sense to us.”

As TV academy voters fill out their 2024 Emmy nominations ballots, they will have to consider 107 shows for Best Drama Series. This is down by 56 contenders compared to last year. As was the case in 2023, members may not allow their selections to exceed the number of eventual nominations for a given award, which, in this case, will be eight.
2023 Best Drama Series winner “Succession” and six of the seven also-rans are out of the current race because they did not air new episodes during the June 1, 2023 to May 31, 2024 qualifying period. This leaves “The Crown” as the only 2023 nominee eligible for an immediate return, which could lead to its second victory here following its first in 2021.
Remember, only eight of the shows below will earn bids for Best Drama Series when the Emmy nominations are announced on July 17. Which do you think will make the cut?

Peter Dinklage became a force to be reckoned with at the Emmys during his tenure as Tyrion Lannister in HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” with the actor winning four wins from eight nominations. The cast of “Game of Thrones” was so good, however, that many of them are still Emmys forces even after the show ended and they’ve moved on to different projects. Let’s take a look at the “Game of Thrones” alumni who could compete at this year’s Emmys.

When Georgia Hunter first pitched her 2017 book, “We Were the Lucky Ones,” about her Polish ancestors’ fight for survival during the Holocaust, she was told World War II literature was a “saturated” market. This wasn’t meant to dissuade her from pushing forward with their harrowing story, but rather acknowledge that there is never a shortage of novels, films and series trying to reckon with the everlasting wounds of the war.
It was no different when Hunter and producers Thomas Kail and Erica Lipez adapted the book into Hulu’s eight-part limited series, which premiered in March.
“We knew with this kind of story in particular, you have to go beyond the logline,” Lipez tells Variety. “It was so much about making sure people heard the full story, particularly when we were pitching it. As someone who thought they had a really good Holocaust education, what I knew immediately upon...

It seems it is the year of the “fashion designer biographies,” as platform after platform is releasing a different one every few months. We had AppleTV+’s The New Look (a black hole on Dior’s legacy if you ask me), Disney+’s Cristobal Banelciaga, and now Hulu’s Becoming Karl Lagerfeld. There’s no denying that the white-haired man behind the glasses has been considered an icon for years, so much so that he’d even become a known face from iconic memes, but the TV series fictionalizes, or rather takes creative liberties on, his life for a decade before he became a legendary couturier. As it goes, shows such as this one often immortalize their subjects as saints who deserve pity and love, forgetting everything that they may have said or done that was terrible. Lagerfeld was known to be an outspoken man, insulting many with his harsh words and controversial bluntness; however,...

It may seem that Netflix has taken over the period dramas’ scene with the glowing success of Bridgerton, the series that got all the possible titles. However, Apple TV is now killing it with their period shows too, as you may have seen such gems, as Lessons in Chemistry (2023), Masters of the Air, The New Look, and Manhunt (all 2024).
This year the platform released a must-see miniseries that also takes us back in time, but here we embark on a journey together with one of the Founding Fathers of the United States, Benjamin Franklin. This show can even beat Bridgerton by its quality (and it surely does better when it comes to historical accuracy).
It starts by depicting the events of December 1776 after The Declaration of Independence was adopted. Franklin goes on a mission to France as commissioner for the United States, taking his 16-year-old grandson, William Temple Franklin with him.

More than once in Hulu’s Becoming Karl Lagerfeld, the question comes up of what its subject’s style actually is. The answers tend to be equivocal. He’s a “ready-to-wear mercenary” and a “boy wonder” overflowing with ideas. He’s got 20 different modes, and no single signature. His style is to change his style, he says — the noncommittal reply of a man still figuring it out.
For an ascendant artist to not totally know himself is one thing. For the six-part biopic about him not to know is another. Being Karl Lagerfeld is plenty curious about the German designer’s life, particularly the calculations that built his career and the personal relationships that threatened to derail it. But it never captures the essence of who he was or the world he lived in — or what any of that means for a viewer in 2024.

France has never had trouble getting people to fall in love with its many pleasures: the Eiffel Tower, the Palace of Versailles, the Louvre, and the island majesty of Mont Saint-Michel. It sells itself, which is probably why it is such a sought-after backdrop for television series.
But in the last year, France has been shown even more love than usual, as more than half a dozen shows, all vying for Emmy attention this season, explored the country through the ages. And no, this wasn’t some elaborate promotion for the upcoming 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
From the 1600s to the modern day to a post-zombie apocalypse future, no cultural stone went unturned on TV this year, giving viewers even more reason to book their next (hopefully zombie-free) vacation.

There is a wealth of period costumes cross the categories for Emmy voters to think about this season.
In limited series, Oscar-winner Colleen Atwood built 200 to 300 leather jackets for AppleTV+’s World War II drama “Masters of the Air.” “It took six months to get them built,” Atwood says. Procuring the right elements was a global process that included getting era-specific zippers from Japan and sheepskin from Scotland and England.
Atwood also explained the unconventional aging process of the garments, saying that “once they were built, we had to shear the inside so they weren’t as thick, and then we put them in a vat of rocks inside a cement mixer to beat the leather up.”
“Shōgun” (now competing in drama series) costume designer Carlos Rosario built over 2,000 costumes for the 10-part show set in feudal Japan.

The show follows the fashion icon, along with Christian Dior, played by Ben Mendelsohn, as they navigate Word War II and its aftermath. In a major shockeroo announcement, Gold Derby can reveal that FX is shifting the popular “Shōgun” away from the limited series races for the 2024 Emmys and will compete in all the drama categories instead. For those who remember, the game show Press Your Luck relied a lot on good timing. In a very roulette-like manner, contestants would watch squares on a board randomly be highlighted until they prompt it to stop in order to get the prize it halted on. An amazing episode in 1984 would have a contestant endlessly receiving good luck as he won big money every time he called, “Stop!” His fortune would be called into question as he would get accused of cheating on the show. Deadline has now shared the first look at Press Your Luck — a movie that will depict the events of that episode and all the controversy surrounding it, starring Paul Walter Hauser as the fateful contestant.
The synopsis, according to Deadline, reads,
“Set in 1984, the film follows Ohio resident Michael Larson, who steps on to the set of game show Press Your Luck harboring a secret:...

John Malkovich has joined Marvel’s “The Fantastic Four” in an undisclosed role, Variety has confirmed. The veteran actor joins Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Marvel’s First Family, along with Julia Garner as Shalla-Bal, a version of the Silver Surfer, and Paul Walter Hauser.
Malkovich has brought his uniquely off-kilter acting style to bear in a prolific career spanning costume drama (like 1988’s “Dangerous Liasons”), studio thrillers (1993’s “In the Line of Fire”), cutting edge indies (1999’s “Being John Malkovich”), wackadoo sci-fi comedies (2005’s “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”) and animated family films (2014’s “Penguins of Madagascar”). Most recently, he has appeared in the Apple TV+ series “The New Look” and the Netflix series “Ripley.”
While his role remains a state secret, there are a suite of possible characters from the comics that he could embody, including Wizard (who leads a supervillain version...

“It’s so important that women like this are not forgotten from history,” declares Maisie Williams about her role as unsung hero Catherine Dior in the Apple TV+ prestige drama “The New Look.” Catherine was best known as a French Resistance fighter during World War II and who is often attributed as her brother Christian’s muse and inspiration for his iconic Miss Dior perfume that he launched in 1947.
For our recent webchat she adds, “if we’re going look at Catherine being one of the original muses of the Dior fashion house, you really have to understand how it is that she inspired Christian. And in order to do that, you have to really understand her life,” she explains. “I feel really grateful that more people are going to learn about her because she’s not someone that we think about when we think of the history of fashion.
