CBS’ NCIS: Origins is about “a story I don’t tell,” narrator Mark Harmon’s Leroy Jethro Gibbs tells us midway through the prequel spinoff’s premiere. Specifically, “This is the story of–“
Actually, the end of that sentence is a major spoiler, and the onset of a provocative mystery. And Gibbs’ full declaration, as the forever-analog former NCIS agent puts this story to paper in front of an Alaskan campfire, is bound to figuratively ignite your interest in what lies ahead.

“Speaking hypothetically, what would happen if a Yankees fan yelled ‘Bucky Fucking Dent’ as you are in your windup to throw out the first pitch today,” I ask Matt Damon as he marinates in the anxiety of Jason Bourne screwing it up on the mound in front of a sellout crowd at Fenway Park.
He doesn’t miss a beat: “I guess I’ll be throwing at your head, Mike.”
We are at Fenway on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon, in which a Red Sox-Yankees contest has turned into a celebration for the Apple TV+ release of The Instigators. That comedy has proved itself an example of a moderately priced film that can be a victory for a big streamer, armed with clever marketing that included the above Dunkin’ Donuts commercial spoof which exploded virally and helped drive the film to become one of Apple TV+’s most watched films.

Variety has been given access to the first clip from “Why War,” written and directed by Israeli filmmaker Amos Gitai. The film, starring Irène Jacob, Mathieu Amalric, Micha Lescot and Jérôme Kircher, has its world premiere on Aug. 31 at the Venice Film Festival in an out of competition berth.
The film is inspired by correspondence between Albert Einstein and Sigmund Freud about how humanity could avoid war. It is also based on a work by Virginia Woolf, “Three Guineas,” in which she investigates the relationships of domination in sexuality, to which an essay by Susan Sontag, “Regarding the Pain of Others,” responds, and talks about the iconography of war.
In a statement, Gitai says: “When the attack on October 7th occurred, I wanted to read and reread some texts to seek help and understand the roots of this human desire to engage in war and in killing. And in this...

Jennifer Aniston won Best Comedy Actress at the 2002 Emmys for the hit laffer “Friends.” Twenty-two years later, she could well pick up an Emmy bookend by winning Best Drama Actress for her starring role as Alex Levy in the acclaimed Apple TV+ series “The Morning Show.” Her rival nominees are: Anna Sawai (“Shōgun”), Imelda Staunton (“The Crown”), Maya Erskine (“Mr. & Mrs. Smith”), Carrie Coon (“The Gilded Age”), and her “The Morning Show” co-star Reese Witherspoon.
Aniston is currently in third place in our odds chart with both Sawai and Staunton ahead of her. Sawai is hoping to win for the first season of “Shōgun,” and she could, theoretically, get taken along for the ride in a “Shōgun” sweep (we expect “Shōgun” to win Best Drama Series). Meanwhile, Staunton is hoping to prevail for the final season of “The Crown” — perhaps voters will get sentimental and want to bid farewell to the lauded show.

Gus Van Sant is a fiercely individual voice with one foot in the independent world and another in the studio system, Van Sant’s filmography varies wildly from mainstream entertainments to peculiar experiments, from sublime highs to extreme lows. Let’s take a look at all 17 of his films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1952 in Louisville, Kentucky, Van Sant kicked off his filmmaking career with the micro-budget, black-and-white “Mala Noche” (1985), a major preamble to the New Queer Cinema. His next feature, “Drugstore Cowboy” (1989), firmly established him as an indie maverick, a reputation he would fulfill with his followup, the River Phoenix/Keanu Reeves road movie “My Own Private Idaho” (1991). He dipped his toes into studio filmmaking with the gleefully dark satire “To Die For” (1995), which won Nicole Kidman a Golden Globe as Best Comedy/Musical Actress.
He hit the Oscar jackpot for the first time with the inspirational drama...

If might not entirely have a question for a title, but it raises them throughout. Not, sadly, because it's all that thought-provoking, but more about questions of intent.
John Krasinski writes and directs, and while it's a fifth for him in either seat it's only the fourth where he's filled both roles. The exceptions are The Hollars and Promised Land (screenplay credit) for those in the big chair for any quizzes. There are some immediate and obvious shortcuts in the story: a dead mother for emotional heft, an adolescent girl for access to discussions of emotion, and occasional cut-aways to Krasinski to maintain tone and balance expenditures.
Does that last seem cynical? Krasinki's alternate-reality Marvel colleague Ryan Reynolds is running on screensaver mode, and while he's charming as default in a film whose credits include 9 Adr locations, he seems to be the only one actually...

Despite being part of a young generation of Palestinian Arabs whose families chose to stay and challenge the Israeli state after Al-Nakba, 17-year-old Tamer and his friends are just like any other group of teenage boys. They clumsily search for drugs, flirt with girls, play video games, and slack off at school. However, when a beautiful new student named Maysaa joins their class, Tamer immediately falls for her and, by association, is drawn into her political activism. Together they join fellow classmate, Safwat, in an operation to covertly raise the Palestinian flag and peacefully disrupt the local celebrations planned for Israel’s Independence Day—otherwise known to Palestinians as a day of mourning and memorialization for their displacement 70 years prior. Unsure of his own political convictions, Tamer must quickly determine what matters to him and what price he is willing to pay for freedom.
A skillful examination of the fraught...

According to new McKinsey & Company research, there are over 62 million Latinos living in the United States who not only account for more than $3 trillion of Gdp but are also avid consumers of film and TV. US Latinos account for 24 percent of box office ticket sales and 24 percent of streaming subscribers. Yet somehow, there still aren't enough Latines behind and in front of the camera even though our viewership doubles when we see ourselves represented on or off screen.
Today, we still don't have enough TV programming that accurately represents us - and the few shows that have been created for us and by us, like "Vida," "One Day at a Time," "Promised Land," and "Gentefied," were eventually all canceled despite their popularity. Among these many cancellations was Dominican American creator Claudia Forestieri's beloved "Gordita Chronicles," which was released in June 2022 on HBO Max and was canceled after just one season.
