To say the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has become more international in recent years doesn’t quite paint a full enough picture of how tastes have changed. Maisie Crow and Abbie Perrault’s abortion documentary “Zurawski v Texas” garnered the inaugural Artemis Rising Foundation Award for Social Impact at the Hamptons International Film Festival. The new award honors one film that transforms our culture and challenges the status quo.

Executive produced by Hillary and Chelsea Clinton and Jennifer Lawrence, “Zurawski v Texas” follows a group of women who, in 2023, band together to sue the state of Texas after being denied abortions despite pregnancy health risks.

Spacey Unmasked is nominated in the new Best Popular Culture Documentary category, which depicts people, events, movements or trends that have had a major impact on popular culture in recent years. ‘Russians at War’ director Anastasia Trofimova in Venice

War doc shelved: This year’s Toronto Film Festival had been surprisingly quiet until Thursday afternoon when the festival said it had paused upcoming screenings of Russian-Canadian director Anastasia Trofimova’s documentary Russians at War “effective immediately” after learning about “significant threats to festival operations and public safety.” The decision was made “in order to ensure the safety of all festival guests, staff, and volunteers,” TIFF said in a statement, adding, “This is an unprecedented move.” Russians at War provides a rare insight into life for Russian soldiers on the frontline in Ukraine.

Updated with producers’ response: The Toronto Film Festival said Thursday that it has paused upcoming screenings of Russian-Canadian director Anastasia Trofimova’s documentary Russians at War “effective immediately” after learning about “significant threats to festival operations and public safety.”

“While we stand firm on our statement shared yesterday, this decision has been made in order to ensure the safety of all festival guests, staff, and volunteers,” TIFF said in a statement today, adding, “This is an unprecedented move for TIFF.”

Russians at War provides a rare insight into life for Russian soldiers on the frontline in Ukraine. Trofimova embedded herself under the radar with Russian troops after making the connection via a soldier she met on a train as he returned home briefly from the front to visit his family. Her aim, she said, was not to glorify the Russian troops, but rather to get to the bottom of what as happening on the frontline.

The Russian-Canadian director of documentary Russians At War, which is screening Out of Competition in Venice, has pushed back against suggestions that the film is an attempt to whitewash war crimes by Russian soldiers in Ukraine.

This year’s slate of 21 documentaries from 24 countries at the Toronto International Film Festival (September 5 – 15) is a melange of newsy subjects, rising directors, and potential Oscar contenders. Sixteen are sales titles, up from last year’s eight. Two high-profile celebrity docs are playing in the gala section of the fest, R. J. Cutler’s “Elton John: Never Too Late” and Thom Zimmy’s “Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.”

The TIFF Documentary Selection will open with “Vice Is Broke,” in which “Huang’s World” journalist Eddie Huang investigates his former employer’s rise and fall into bankruptcy. “It’s an insider’s look at a media company that gave many people opportunities and did things in sloppy ways,” TIFF documentary programmer Thom Powers told IndieWire via Zoom. “It soared up to a value of $5.7 billion and won the attention of moguls like David Zaslav and Rupert Murdoch.

The Grierson Trust has announced the shortlist for the 2024 British Documentary Awards, with the BBC coming top at 28 entries.

Channel 4 follows closely behind with 23, Netflix with 17, Sky Documentaries with eight and National Geographic with four. The shortlist spans 15 program and presenter categories to reflect the best documentary singles and series launched across broadcasters, streamers and online, as well as theatrical releases.

Netflix will release biographical documentary Modern Masters: SS Rajamouli on August 2, shedding light on the Indian filmmaker behind titles like Baahubali and Rrr.

Presented by Anupama Chopra, the documentary features insights on S.S. Rajamouli from James Cameron, Joe Russo, and Karan Johar, as well as close friends and colleagues such as Prabhas, Jr Ntr, Rana Daggubati and Ram Charan.

Netflix partnered with Applause Entertainment and Film Companion Studios to make the documentary, which highlights Rajamouli’s influence on Indian and international cinema, with interviews and behind-the-scenes footage. The film will form part of Netflix’s Modern Masters doc series on Indian creatives.

Every summer, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences invites a deluge of new members to join its ranks. Since #OscarsSoWhite back in 2015, the Academy has moved away from its elitist tendencies and toward embracing younger and more diverse artists and executives from all over the world. This year’s invited class is no exception.

If the invitees all accept Academy membership, the total members will number 10,910 and voting members 9,934. And with the addition of the 2024 members, 35 percent of Academy members identify as women, 20 percent of Academy members are from underrepresented ethnic and racial communities, and 20 percent of Academy members are from countries or territories outside the U.S.

The ethics of documentary filmmaking is not a new topic of debate, but after last month’s Washington Post article about an Afghan man allegedly murdered by the Taliban as a consequence of his participation in Matthew Heineman’s Oscar shortlisted 2022 documentary “Retrograde,” the discussion around the moral responsibility of nonfiction filmmakers has once again heated up.

Unlike with journalists, there are no widely-accepted standards that documentary filmmakers are expected to abide by. Regulations for personal nonfiction storytelling can be counterintuitive. Intrusive. Unless a director is working on a documentary for PBS’ “Frontline” series, known for adherence to journalism standards, situational ethics determined on a case-by-case are more often than not the norm.

“Retrograde” tells the story of the United States’ final months of its 20-year war in Afghanistan. In the film Heineman, whose “Cartel Land” was nominated for an Oscar in 2016, embedded with the U.S. Army Green Berets and Lt.

The Peabody Awards Board of Jurors today announced the 41 nominees for the Documentary, News, Public Service and Radio/Podcast categories selected to represent the most compelling and empowering stories released in broadcasting and streaming media during 2023. The nominees were chosen by a unanimous vote of 32 jurors from more than 1,100 entries from television, podcasts/radio and the web in entertainment, news, documentary, arts, children’s/youth, public service and multimedia programming.

Among the Documentary nominees is the 2024 Oscar winner 20 Days in Mariupol, which followed director Mstyslav Chernov as he led a team of AP journalists caught in the Ukrainian city in 2022 after the Russian invasion. Five other Oscar-nominated documentaries also received Peabody noms, including the 2023 nominees All That Breathes and All the Beauty and the Bloodshed and 2024 nominees Bobi Wine: The People’s President, The Eternal Memory and To Kill a Tiger. The Emmy-winning bio-doc Still: A Michael J. Fox Story also received a nomination.

The South by Southwest debut of “Stormy” was not your typical Imagine Documentaries premiere.

About adult film star Stormy Daniels’ alleged affair with former President Donald Trump, the film drew an eclectic crowd that included porn stars and “Muppet” director-producer Frank Oz, who sat in the same row as Daniels and her entourage made up mainly of buff bodyguards. Dogs sniffed Austin’s Stateside Theater prior to the screening. After it unspooled, Daniels spoke to the SXSW audience, revealing that she first met “Stormy” exec producer Judd Apatow when he hired her for a small part in his 2005 film “40 Year-Old Virgin.” When she was a no-show due to a death in the family, Apatow sent her flowers and rescheduled her shoot date.

“I thought he would replace me,” Daniels, who would go on to appear in “Knocked Up” for the filmmaker, told the crowd, with director Sarah Gibson standing nearby.

Dev Patel’s feature directorial debut is picking up steam on the hype train. Monkey Man recently premiered to great raves at the SXSW Festival, and the screening earned Patel a lengthy standing ovation, which moved him to tears. Universal has released a final trailer for the Jordan Peele-produced film just before it hits theaters (and faces) on April 5. “Salem’s Lot” Will Skip Theaters to Stream Exclusively

The long-in-development film adaptation of Stephen King’s “Salem’s Lot” is being made, after all, but will no longer premiere in theaters, opting for a Max-exclusive streaming premiere this year with an official date to be announced later.

Originally intended for a September 2022 theatrical release, New Line Cinema pushed the film to 2023 citing the Covid-19 pandemic shutdown for delays before removing it from its release calendar entirely. King’s 1975 novel was first adapted for the screen with CBS’s 1979 miniseries starring David Soul.

“Salem’s Lot” is written and directed by Gary Dauberman (“Annabelle”). The new version will see Ben Mears (Lewis Pullman) return to his childhood home of Jerusalem’s Lot looking to come up with an idea for a new novel but discovers his hometown’s residents are becoming vampires.

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer (which entered with the most nominations) stole the show this year with seven wins, including best picture, director, actor (Cillian Murphy), supporting actor (Robert Downy Jr.), original score, cinematography, and film editing. Best actress, meantime, went to Emmy Stone for her portrayal of Bella Baxter in Poor Things, while supporting actress went to The Holdovers‘ Da’Vine Joy Randolph.

New Delhi-born Indian Canadian filmmaker, Nisha Pahuja, has shared how Ranjit, the Jharkhand rice farmer whose fight for justice for his gang-raped daughter is the story of her Oscar-nominated documentary feature, ‘To Kill A Tiger’, did not get an American visa when the film was theatrically released in the US in September last year.

“We tried to get visas for him and his incredible daughter back in September for the US around the time of our theatrical launch,” Pahuja says in an Instagram post. “They were denied. It was a heartbreaking experience for all of us.”

The post accompanies a picture of Pahuja in red gown with Ranjit, outfitted in a black tuxedo, in the backstage area of the Oscars venue, the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. “Without doubt, one of the proudest moments of my life,” Pahuja writes.

Oppenheimer swept most of the top honors, including Best Picture, while fan favorite Barbie took just a single award.

Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell set a new record as the youngest people to win two Oscars for their song “What Was I Made For?” for the Barbie soundtrack. The Best Actor/Actress categories featured previous Oscar winners such as Michelle Yeoh and Brendan Fraser introducing the nominees with personal messages to each star.

The event aired on Sunday night (March 10) on ABC, and was hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, who previously led the awards show in 2017, 2018 and 2023.

In one of the most competitive races in years, 20 Days in Mariupol won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature tonight, earning director Mstyslav Chernov an Academy Award to go with a Pulitzer Prize.

Los Angeles, March 10 (Ians) Priyanka Chopra Jonas was the star at a special screening of ‘To Kill A Tiger’, a soul-searing documentary feature by the Indian-Canadian Emmy-winning director Nisha Pahuja in the race for an Oscar, but the spotlight was on Ranjit, a Jharkhand farmer who’s the ‘hero’ of the film.

In the words of TV actor Sahil Salathia, who attended the exclusive screening on Saturday night at the Netflix headquarters in Los Angeles and Instagrammed about it: “Ranjit ji is an Indian farmer who supported his daughter (right till the end!) who was traumatised by life and the society. Netflix’s Indian slate for this year includes a feature film about a group of drunk young men who crash a wedding, and a series about a plane hijacking.

Toplining the new titles is Wild Wild Punjab, a Luv Films feature from Simarpreet Singh written by Harman Wadala and Sandeep Jain. According to the longline, it follows “a group of drunk boys” who “avenge a friend’s breakup by crashing his ex’s wedding and achieve closure.”

Cast includes Varun Sharma, Sunny Singh, Manjot Singh, Jassie Gill, Patralekhaa and Ishita Raj.

Other new films include Akshay Roy’s Vijay 69, a “quirky, slice-of-life film about a man who decides to compete in a triathlon” nearly the age of 70, from Try Entertainment; heist thriller Sikandar Ka Muqaddar from Neeraj Pandey; and Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba, from director Jayprad Desai, writer Kanika Dhillon and co-producers T-Series and Colour Yellow Productions.

A release date has not seen set for the first streaming project from Bhansali, who is known for historical epics such Gangubai Kathiawadi, which screened at the Berlinale in 2022, Sony-backed Saawariya and Devdas, which screened at Cannes in 2002. Netflix has revealed its upcoming 2024 Indian slate and Monika Shergill, VP, content has outlined the streamer’s commissioning philosophy and strategy for the country.

New titles on the slate include: Luv Ranjan comedy film “Wild Wild Punjab”; Neeraj Pandey heist film “Sikandar Ka Muqaddar”; scripted Anubhav Sinha thriller series “Ic 814: The Kandahar Hijack”; Kapil Sharma’s unscripted comedy series “The Great Indian Kapil Show”; and cricket themed docu-series “The Greatest Rivalry – India vs Pakistan,” featuring top Indian and Pakistani cricketers.

These are in addition to a host of previously announced films and returning series across multiple genres. Highlights include Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s lavish period drama “Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar” and Nisha Pahuja’s Oscar-nominated documentary “To Kill a Tiger.”

“Overall, if I look at the slate, I think the incredible diversity that we are very intentionally programmed to is something that I’m very excited about,” Shergill told Variety.

Los Angeles, Feb 25 (Ians) Netflix, reports ‘Variety’, has acquired Nisha Pahuja’s Oscar-nominated documentary feature ‘To Kill a Tiger’, which tells the story of the father of a 13-year-old rape victim in Jharkhand and his long and lonely fight for justice.

The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2022 and was awarded best documentary at Palm Springs.

The 127-minute film charts the emotional journey of Ranjit, a farmer in Jharkhand, whose determined effort forces a social reckoning after his 13-year-old daughter is the victim of a gang rape, adds ‘Variety’.

Pahuja, who spent eight months making the film, is a New Delhi-born Canadian director who was previously in the news about her Emmy nomination for the documentary feature ‘The World Before Her’, which is about the complex and conflicting environment in which young girls grow up in India.
