Shortly after the beginning of the film when Davy and Ally are singing "I'm On My Way", as they make their way down the high street dancing, they nearly bump into two men. The two men - twins - are Charlie Reid and Craig Reid: The Proclaimers.
Most of the characters are portrayed as supporters of Hibernian Football Club, the club supported by the Proclaimer Twins, Craig Reid and Charlie Reid, who wrote all of the songs featured. Behind the bar in the "Let's Get Married" scene, a flag proclaims "Scottish Cup Winners 1902". Hibs did win the Scottish Cup in 1902, followed by an 114 year wait until they next won it in 2016.
During 'the chase' scene when Davy runs after Yvonne, there are 2 references (running down the steps and the car bonnet) to Trainspotting, another hugely successful film from Edinburgh.
Neither of the main pub scenes in the movie were filmed in either Edinburgh or Leith. "It's Over and Done With" is filmed in Glasgow's Griffin Bar and "Let's Get Married" is also filmed in Glasgow - in the Saracen's Head, a traditional Celtic supporters' bar close to Celtic Park.
The Art Gallery scenes were filmed at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery in Glasgow.
