Member of Parliament Nadhim Zahawi played himself, in a cameo role, as a member of a Parliamentary Select Committee which examined the scandal surrounding the Horizon computer system that was responsible for the financial irregularities wrongly attributed to many sub-postmasters.
Following the popularity of the ITV drama and the renewed public interest in the Horizon case, more than 1.2 million people signed a petition urging the government to strip Paula Vennells of her CBE. On 9th January 2024, Vennells announced that she intended to return her CBE after hearing how many people wanted her to hand back her royal honour. On 10th January, Rishi Sunak, the Prime Minister, announced that the government would "introduce new primary legislation to make sure that those convicted as a result of the Horizon scandal are swiftly exonerated and compensated".
On Friday May 24th 2024, a law quashing convictions from the Horizon IT scandal was approved by Parliament and became one of the final bills to become law ahead of the general election.
Mr. Bates has been awarded a knighthood in the 2024 King's Birthday Honours.
Paula Vennells only took over as CEO of the Post Office in April 2012, many years into the scandal.
