Irrfan Khan had signed Tigmanshu Dhulia's Bichde Sabhi Baari Baari (Yaara) in 2014. Starring Manoj Bajpayee,Irrfan Khan, Vidyut Jamwal,Amit Sadh,Shruti Hassan .It was the story of two friends. After it did not work out with Manoj Bajpayee, Irrfan Khan and Tigmanshu were to play the two friends. Tigmanshu dropped weight for the role. Yaara is a desi adaptation of the French film Les Lyonnais (A Gang Story). It is the story of their journey in life from 1955 to 2010. Tigmanshu relocated the plot and the characters to Uttarakhand where he is from. Once Irrfan left the project, Tigmanshu decided to give his own role to Amit Sadh and have Vidyut Jamwal play the older character that Irrfan was signed to play. Now Vidyut and Amit would play both the young and old characters in the film.

The television broadcast version received a U/A classification after some cuts were made in audio (one profane word and an objectionable dialogue) and video (graphic torture scene, a boy holding gun and visuals of a liquor brand). An anti-smoking static message as well as video were added.
