“It’s a mad way to make a film, and I’m not sure it’s not something I would rush into again,” director Hope Dickson Leach said of the process behind her latest feature, the Edinburgh competition title The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
Leach, best known for her well-received debut, The Levelling, which debuted at Toronto in 2016, was approached by the National Theatre of Scotland during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic to create a hybrid film-theatre project that could engage audiences while health restrictions were still in place.
The result was a stage production of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, performed live at the Leith Theatre in Edinburgh by a troop of actors who were tracked around the venue by six cameras. The footage was mixed and edited live by Leach, who sat in an operating van outside the venue.

Long ago, before the Marvel Cinematic Universe's gargantuan interconnecting list of films and Disney+ shows, there existed Universal Television's "The Incredible Hulk" series. Although it seems quaint in comparison to today's mega-budget superhero fare, Kenneth Johnson's science-fiction drama hybrid was a major ratings hit and was one of the earliest success stories regarding a live-action comic book adaptation. The popularity of the series, as well as the strange legal tension between Marvel Comics and its licensing partners, is why Stan Lee rushed to create a She-Hulk before Johnson could.
In the '70s, Marvel Comics had sold the rights to a handful of its characters to the separate company of Universal Television. Besides the Hulk, Ms. Marvel, Namor, and the Human Torch were also on the studio's bracket. Johnson, who had already found success with Universal's "The Bionic Woman," initially wasn't interested in adapting any of these...

Perfection is a word used too frequently to describe a movie. But in the case of the 1953 romantic comedy “Roman Holiday,” perfection is not hyperbole. Directed by William Wyler and nominated for 10 Academy Awards, “Roman Holiday” is a gem of a fairy tale.
Audrey Hepburn plays Princess Ann, a young sheltered monarch from a European country bored to tears on a goodwill trip who decides to escape her guardians while in Rome. She ends up falling in love with a handsome American reporter (Gregory Peck). He recognizes the princess on the lam and initially befriends her to get her story only to fall for the winsome young woman. Eddie Albert plays Peck’s carefree, womanizing friend who is a photographer.

The show must go on. At least the Venice Film Festival must go on. Even a pandemic can’t stop the oldest international film festival from taking place Sept. 2 through Sept. 12 in the picturesque of grand canals. Of course, safety is first with masks, social distancing etc. are all in place as critics get a first glance at possible award-winners.
Over the past seven years, the festival has held world premieres of such Oscar-winners as 2013’s “Gravity”; 2014’s “Birdman”; 2015’s “Spotlight”; 2016’s “La La Land”; 2017’s “The Shape of Water”; 2018’s “Roma”; and 2019’s “Joker.” Only two films that won the festival’s top prize have gone on to win Best Picture at the Oscars: 1948’s “Hamlet” and 2017’s “The Shape of Water.”

‘He pops up absolutely everywhere doesn’t he?’ says Daniel Mays about his Code 404 co-star Stephen Graham. You could say the same of Mays. A draw on any cast list, between them in the last year alone they’ve appeared in almost 20 major titles – 1917, Good Omens, White Lines (Mays), The Irishman, The Virtues, Line of Duty, Save Me (Graham) to name just a handful.
Why Mays and Graham are in such high and regular demand is no mystery; they’re two of our best. Mays has an instant affability on screen that he’s able to turn to tragedy or comedy or both at once. Graham’s characters are often the reverse, unknowable and dangerous before he lays their vulnerabilities bare.
In sci-fi comedy Code 404, they play detectives with a tangled personal history. Mays is a Di unexpectedly brought back from the dead via some bug-ridden experimental AI tech.

Finding a little inner peace might seem all but impossible amidst the current state of quarantines, cancellations and an overwhelming sense of anxiety spurred by coronavirus pandemic. But even on the darkest of days a little bit of art can shine like a beacon of connection, lifting spirits and bringing joy. If you’ve heard the melodies of isolated Italians reaching out to their confined neighbors through song it’s undeniable — art connects us all.
Across the internet creators, musicians and actors from all over offer up a little bit of calm for everyone. Musical artist Lizzo led a 30-minute meditation, “Frozen 2’s” Josh Gad held a reading of a children’s book, Yo-Yo Ma has started a “songs of comfort” series and Broadway stars are using their clout to signal boost shuttered high school musical productions.

When it came to women, Columbia Pictures founder Harry Cohn was something of a Jekyll and Hyde — but mostly Hyde. On the one hand, he could be their champion: He appointed screenwriter Virginia Van Upp as an executive producer at the studio in 1946, the first woman with that title. But, just as with allegations about Harvey Weinstein — who is often compared to the fearsome Cohn — starlets in the mogul's orbit were viewed as sexual commodities. After being forced to endure the long summer hiatus, we can now rest easy as each of our favorite DC shows have finally returned with a round of spectacular premieres. And now that the fall season is in full swing, we continue looking ahead, this time at episodes of Supergirl and Arrow set to air during Halloween week.
First, on Monday, October 30, Supergirl begins charting what’ll be surely be a strange journey for Odette Annable’s character of Samantha. Casually introduced to us in the season 3 premiere, we know that the seemingly average woman will go on to become Reign, this year’s big bad. Truth be told, the unassuming villain is something we’ve yet to see from this series, so we could have some great television ahead of us.
Continuing on that note, we also can’t help but draw parallels to Smallville‘s Davis Bloome, who was played by Sam Witwer.

This week's episode of The Sheldon Show is pretty funny, it's a shame the same can't be said for Raj and Stuart's overfamiliar storyline...

11.3 The Relaxation Integration
Sheldon Cooper is many things, but he’s never been a guy you’d catch dead saying “whatevs”.
But what if the mounting stress of all the changes he’s been through over the past few years snapped his brain somehow, and marrying Amy is the final straw for uptight, anal Sheldon.
Nah, that will never happen, but The Relaxation Integration poses the question anyway. When Amy starts to notice her fiance is talking in his sleep, pondering the interesting conversations he could have with a hitchhiker or what it would be like to befriend a seagull, she worries...

Glance at Chris Janson’s impressive resume so far: one platinum single and a hot new song rocketing up the charts. A much-anticipated second album that he co-wrote from start to finish. And, to top it off, crazy harmonica skills and a riveting stage style that makes you wonder if he’s the love child of Loretta Lynn and Mick Jagger.
So why in the world does Janson describe himself as just an ordinary, everyday kind of guy?

Chicago – Jerry Lewis had a long and winding life, dying last week at the age of 91. Through that life he had many show business lives – including the inevitable addictions – surviving all of the them with his signature comic style. He also was featured in over 70 films, and HollywoodChicago.com remembers three of them.

When the gawky 19 year-old Lewis met the suave singer Dean Martin in 1946, little did they know that they would become the most popular act in America for several years, and make 16 films together between 1949 through 1956. Their box office draw was white-hot, so much so that neither of them could keep up with the blur of what happened to them. “Martin & Lewis” eventually broke up at the height of their fame in 1956, during which Martin famously said, “Jer, when I look at you,...

For some, it is his masterpiece. For others, it is unendurably and outrageously awful, an exercise in frantically broad slapstick comedy that inspires pure disbelief, as well as derision for those reported chin-strokers and ironic postmodernists in France and elsewhere who affect to admire it. It’s rare that a producer’s name becomes as familiar to the public as the stars of the films he or she makes, but in the late 1970s and ’80s, Allan Carr was a regular talk show guest and caftan wearing celebrity in his own right. A new fast paced, fascinating documentary by Emmy winner Jeffrey Schwarz (‘I Am Divine’, ‘Tab Hunter Confidential’) follows the highs and lows of Carr’s colourful career featuring interviews with those who knew him best.
‘The Fabulous Allan Carr’
Starting out in the entertainment industry as a talent booker for Hugh Hefner’s television show, Carr soon became a talent manager representing the likes of Ann-Margaret, Peter Sellers, Tony Curtis and Mama Cass Elliot. Following Carr’s legendary New York subway station premiere party for ‘Tommy’, he gained a reputation for being able to launch a movie with a splash.

When Marvel made Iron Man in 2007, it didn’t just release a new superhero movie; it also embarked on something quite new in cinema. As a producer on projects like Starry Eyes and The Sacrament, Camera Obscura co-writer/director Aaron B. Koontz has been a fixture of the indie horror film community for some time now. Koontz recently celebrated the VOD and On Demand release of his debut feature, Camera Obscura, which ambitiously blends together the psychological horror/haunted camera/slasher genres for a truly unexpected cinematic treat.
Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak to Koontz about his experiences working on Camera Obscura, and he discussed how he approached both the story of the film as well as its conflicted protagonist, Jack Zeller (portrayed by Christopher Denham), how his earlier career helped prepare him to take the directorial reins, the joy of being able to collaborate with friends, and more.

What made Tom Cruise a movie star? It wasn’t his toothy smile or his all-American dimples. It wasn’t that he was cocky enough to be loved, but also vulnerable enough to be lovable, although that certainly helped. It wasn’t even the fact that the way he runs on screen tells us more about the fundamental nature of cinema than anyone has conveyed with a stride since Eadweard Muybridge trained his camera on a galloping horse. No, Tom Cruise became a movie star because he possessed something that galvanized all of those individual qualities into something special — a need for quality control.
Just consider those credits: “Risky Business.” “Top Gun.” “Born on the Fourth of July.” Cruise was a human seal of freshness decades before today’s Hollywood A-listers needed Rotten Tomatoes to validate their work. The 2016 blu ray release of the Frankenstein and Wolf Man Legacy Collections was a moment of celebration for movie and monster lovers everywhere, bringing together all the golden age appearances of Frankenstein’s misbegotten creation and Larry Talbot’s hairy alter-ego. Universal Studios treated those dusty creature features to luminous restorations; from Bride of Frankenstein to She Wolf of London, these essential artifacts never looked less than impeccable and, at times, even ravishing. Colin Clive’s frenzied declaration, “It’s Alive!”, never felt more appropriate.

Part monster movie, part romantic comedy, part feminist manifesto: Nacho Vigalondo’s “Colossal” is a lot of things. But Anne Hathaway’s first impression of it was much simpler than that.
“I think the exact email I got from my agent was, ‘This might be too weird, but it might be the right weird,'” the actress recently told IndieWire when asked about her first introduction to the project. “I read it and it felt like it the right weird.”
An innovative blend of high concept sci-fi and romcom tropes, “Colossal” gives “Kong: Skull Island” a run for its money as the disaster movie of the year, which is why it’s somewhat of a shock to consider that it almost didn’t get made at all. Vigalondo first gained exposure among genre fans for his labyrinthine time-travel comedy “Timecrimes,” but it has taken years for him to make a more widely-accessible crowdpleaser.

Since The Real Housewives of Atlanta debuted in 2008, Shereé Whitfield hasn’t suffered any fools — always appearing as the strong, confident tough girl and rarely getting vulnerable in front of the cameras.
But on Sunday’s all new episode, the 47-year-old reality star broke down in tears when confronted with what she claimed were memories of the alleged physical abuse she had experienced while married to ex-husband Bob Whitfield.
The emotional moment happened while the two were on vacation in Maui, Hawaii — during an already explosive couple’s trip.
Bob was there as part of his continued efforts to woo Shereé back.

This season, a big focus has been on the mythos surrounding being the Savior, and Emma's internal struggle as she comes to grip with a peek into her future – one that will ultimately lead to her death.
We've also had a glimpse into the Land of Untold Stories, where Jekyll and Hyde, Cinderella, and the Count of Monte Cristo had continuations of their well known tales.
And then there's Agrabah, and the introduction of Aladdin, Jasmine, and Jafar, a storyline that we've only just begun to scratch the surface on.
All the while, the usual players, Rumplestiltskin, the Evil Queen, and Zelena have been creating their usual kinds of havoc, as Storybrooke continues to be the town where everything that can go wrong will go wrong.

Maverick director Abel Ferrara talks to us about his career in movies, from Driller Killer to Bad Lieutenant and Body Snatchers...
When British distributor Vipco put out full-age ads depicting a particularly bloody scene from Driller Killer, the movie became an unwitting part of the 'video nasty' moral flap of the early 80s. Suddenly, director Abel Ferrara's low-budget, quick-and-dirty horror-arthouse-drama about a young artist going crazy in Manhattan was lumped in with such films as Cannibal Holocaust, Last House On The Left and the tawdry SS Experiment Camp.
