Anyone who knows and loves a theater kid understands that they can be… a little much. To their credit, theater kids accept and embrace this reputation. Both the excessiveness of theater kids and their willingness to celebrate their extremities can be seen in the comedy Theater Camp, directed by Molly Gordon and Nick Lieberman. After winning over critics and earning a strong, if limited, return in theaters, Theater Camp has come to Hulu.
Based on a short film that Gordon and Lieberman made with Ben Platt and Noah Galvin, Theater Camp features a group of theater kids trying to save their camp from the founder’s jerky son, who wants to sell it off for something more profitable. Both self-aware and sincere, Theater Camp is a love letter to the over-the-top nerds who can sing every word of A Chorus Line and know that Andrew Rannells was in Street Sharks.

Gina Rodriguez is getting a visitor from the other side.
The Jane the Virgin vet stars in ABC’s new comedy Not Dead Yet — premiering this Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 8:30/7:30c — as Nell Serrano, a journalist who moves back to the States from London after a broken engagement. Nell gets a job at the local newspaper where she used to work, but rather than picking up where she left off, Nell is assigned to the lowly obituary beat. And the gig comes with an unexpected and not entirely welcome perk: the people Nell is writing about appear to her as ghosts!

“A lot of this show is based on our real relationship,” promises Mayan Lopez of Lopez vs. Lopez, the comedy she’s sharing with her real-life pop, George Lopez, now in his fourth sitcom where he plays a fictionalized version of himself. This time around the laughs are a bit darker. The down-on-his-luck George is owning up to years of disappointing his veterinarian daughter. Cheating on his ex-wife Rosie (Selenis Leyva), Mayan’s mom, and substance abuse are among his chief wrongdoings. To repair the rift, George volunteers to help Mayan renovate her kitchen but, recently broke and homeless due to the pandemic, he’s soon moving in with Mayan, her caring boyfriend Quinten and their energetic 7-year-old Chance (Brice Gonzalez). Mayan and George have lots of fun — smashing walls with sledgehammers and twerking for TikTok videos — but they’ll also confront their deep-seated conflicts. If audiences connect with that,...

The Annie Murphy-led “Kevin Can F**k Himself” has been renewed for a second season at AMC, the cable channel said Friday.
Season 1 of the part multi-cam, part single-cam series followed the story of Allison McRoberts (Murphy), a woman we all grew up believing we knew: the prototypical Sitcom Wife, per AMC’s description. She’s beautiful and can take a joke (though she’s usually the butt of them). And she’s married to a guy who must’ve won some sort of marriage lottery, because she looks the way she does and he’s… funny. The series broke television convention via volleying camera setups and allowed the audience to see what happened when the cameras followed Allison out of her husband’s domain and as she finally wakes up to — and revolts against — the injustices in her life.
The second season of the genre-bending drama, which is filmed in and around Boston,...

ABC is starting to whittle down its comedy projects.
The Disney-owned network is not moving forward with two high-profile comedy pilots – Lucy Liu’s workplace comedy, which was formerly known as Kids Matter Now, and Work Wife.
The workplace comedy, which has also had the title Bossy, starred Lucy Liu and came from Better with You creator Shana Goldberg-Meehan, CBS Television Studios and 20th Century Fox TV.
The multi-camera comedy was ordered to pilot in March 2020 but the Covid pandemic meant that it wasn’t able to shoot until much later down the line.
Written and executive produced by Goldberg-Meehan and directed by Christine Gernon (Speechless), the show centered on a diva boss with no patience for working parents who adopts a baby and has a change of heart, casting her mother-of-three assistant as an unlikely mentor and upending the office dynamics.
Former Angie Tribeca star Hayes MacArthur was set as a lead opposite Liu.

Exclusive: Showtime has put in development a half-hour comedy drama revolving around an Arab mother and her gay son, from writer-producer-actor Lewaa Nasserdeen and Skydance Television, where Nasserdeen is under a deal.
Written by Nasserdeen, the project, loosely inspired by his life, follows Omar and Reema, a 30-something gay Arab son and his extravagant and ‘complicated’ mother, as they face divorce at the same time … and under one roof. While Omar is looking for ways to reconnect with his roots after his breakup, Reema is stepping outside of her cultural comfort zone for the first time in her life. Together this modern-day Arab Odd Couple are forced to confront a post-divorce reality while navigating adult ass whoopings, generational trauma, and their own co-dependent relationship.
The project is being developed as a potential starring vehicle for Nasserdeen, who executive produces with David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Bill Bost for Skydance Television,...

Champion figure skater Adam Rippon is developing a comedy series about figure skating at NBC, Variety has learned.
Rippon and Susan Kittenplan co-created the series and developed the story, with both serving as executive producers. Billy Finnegan is also a co-creator and is attached to write the script and executive produce. 20th Television will produce.
Set in the off-the-wall world of adult figure skating, the series is said to tackle the oversized ambitions, underwhelming talent and boundless heart as one woman fights her family, failing knees and every other skater on the ice.
Rippon formally retired from competition in 2018 after competing in the 2018 Winter Olympics. He consistently ranked as one of the top skaters in the world during his career, winning gold medals at events like the Four Continents Championships and the World Junior Championships. He went on to win Season 26 of “Dancing with the Stars” at ABC.
He is repped by ICM.

We certainly don’t need another reason to wish the coronavirus gone and Broadway back in business, but here’s one anyway: Ben Platt wants to return to the stage. “Hankering,” is the word he uses. “I’m looking at film offers and scripts, but once it’s possible,” Platt says, “I’m certainly looking to get back on stage.”
There’s even reason to hope that sometime down the road the original (and Tony-winning) Evan Hansen will hit the Broadway stage in a concert production a la Bruce Springsteen and David Byrne.
But first, Platt is busy remote-promoting his recent Netflix double-punch: His concert special Ben Platt Live From Radio City Music Hall, and Season 2 of Ryan Murphy’s must-binge The Politician, both streaming now. Like everyone else, he’s more or less sidelined from performing by the Covid-19 pandemic and industry shutdown. He’s living with his boyfriend,...

Are you ready for Love, Victor?
Hulu on Monday released the first clip from its Love, Simon spinoff, and it shows the titular character interacting with a barista.
We're not going to spoil how it goes, because we're sure you're going to want to watch the clip.
Set in the same universe as the 2018 movie, Love Victor follows Victor (Michael Cimino), a new student at Creekwood High School.
The teenager is on his own journey of self-discovery as he faces adjusting to a new city, as well as challenges at home.
He is also struggling to come to terms with his sexual orientation.
To make things easier, he reaches out to Simon to get assistance with navigating the trials and tribulations of high school.
Nick Robinson, who played Simon in the original movie is on board to narrate the sequel, but there's still no word on whether he will appear on-screen.
