Starz’s Spartacus: House of Ashur starring Nick Tarabay has added 12 guest stars to its cast. The much-anticipated new addition to the Spartacus franchise is in production in New Zealand, with Spartacus creator, writer, and executive producer Steven S. DeKnight guiding the series as showrunner.

“Spartacus: House of Ashur will be a history-bending, erotic, thrilling, roller-coaster experience that builds on everything that made the original series a colossal hit,” reads Starz’s synopsis. “The series poses the question: what if Ashur, played by fan favorite Nick Tarabay, hadn’t died on Mount Vesuvius at the end of Spartacus: Vengeance? Some breaking news from Westeros: The Game of Thrones prequel series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has added a major talent from Black Mirror to serve as its debut season’s lead director, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Owen Harris has boarded the HBO drama as an executive producer and will also direct the first three episodes, establishing the directorial vision for the series. Harris is best known for helming two of Black Mirror‘s finest episodes — “Be Right Back” and the widely acclaimed “San Junipero.”

In addition, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms‘ episode count has now been revealed: The first season will be six episodes, making for a tighter opener than the 10-episode first seasons of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. The run time seems appropriate given Knight is an adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s 160-page novella The Hedge Knight rather than one of his 900-page epic novels.

The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Sophie Skelton of Outlander will be leading the cast of the UK murder mystery thriller Row, which is currently in pre-production and will begin filming in Scotland next month. Joining Skelton in the cast are Bella Dayne (Troy: Fall of a City), Akshay Khanna, and Mark Strepan (Before We Die).

Row will mark the feature debut of director Matthew Losasso and writer Nick Skaugen – and Skaugen has an acting role in the film as well. The story centers on a woman who washes ashore on a blood-stained rowing boat. With all of her crew mates missing, presumed dead, she must try and piece together fractured memories of the ordeal to prove her innocence.

“Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” star Hakeem Kae-Kazim is set to make his directorial debut with upcoming feature “It’s the Blackness.”

Written by newcomer Dapo Oshiyemi, “It’s the Blackness” tells the story of two ambitious graduates from an elite university who must navigate institutional and structural racism as they look to build their careers in modern Britain while at the same time still making space in their lives for love and family.

The film, which is currently in pre-production, is set in South London. Shooting is set to start in London in March/April.

The British writer has joined the upcoming series as showrunner and exec producer following the departure of Terence Winter in November. It was understood that the Boardwalk Empire creator left the series, which is a companion to Matt Reeves’ feature The Batman, over creative differences.

Barton is best known for creating Tokyo- and London-set crime drama Giri/Haji for Netflix and the BBC. Amazon’s upcoming “Lord of the Rings” series has cast Joseph Mawle in a main role, Variety has confirmed with sources.

Mawle joins previously announced cast members Will Poulter and Markella Kavenagh. Official details of Mawle’s characters are being kept under wraps, but sources say he will play a villain named Oren.

Exclusive: Netflix’s Arthurian legend series Cursed has added Humans and Troy: Fall of a City actress Bella Dayne.

Dayne joins previously announced cast including Katherine Langford, Devon Terrell, Gustaf Skarsgard, Peter Mullan and Lily Newmark. In a series-regular role, she will play Red Spear, described to us as “a regal and ruthless viking captain, with an eye for treasure. … Loyal to no one, the Red Spear and her crew raid villages along the coast of Britain until a Fey stowaway boards her ship and entangles their fates.”

Netflix gave a 10-episode order to the project, which is based on comics supremo Frank Miller and Tom Wheeler’s upcoming illustrated book. Zetna Fuentes (Jessica Jones) and Jon East (Killing Eve) are among directors on the drama epic, which is a re-imagining of the Arthurian legend, told through the eyes of the young woman (Langford) who would become the Lady of the Lake.

Netflix has asserted that it has a “long-term commitment” to producing shows out of the UK and is growing “deep roots” with the British creative community.

Anne Mensah, Vice President of Original Series, Netflix told the House of Lords’ Communications Committee, “I was brought in to essentially work with British talent and to help and support that talent to reach a global stage. I believe my appointment and the appointment of my team in London is an indication of Netflix’s commitment and its long-term commitment to production in the UK.”

The former Sky drama chief said that Netflix wanted to have a mixed model in the UK with original commissions, co-productions with linear broadcasters including the BBC and Channel 4 and co-licensing deals. “It’s about collaboration, not competition,” she said.

Cannes — Rock Salt Releasing has acquired world sales rights for South African director Harold Hölscher’s “8,” a horror film that plays on African folklore and mythology to tell a dark story of atonement.

Produced by Man Makes A Picture with Rolling Thunder, pic stars Tsamano Sebe (“Of Good Report”), Inge Beckmann (“Escape Room”), Garth Breytenbach (“Troy: Fall of a City”) and up-and-coming actor Keita Luna. It marks the feature directorial debut of Hölscher, who also wrote the script.

“8” tells the story of a man who moves his wife and adopted daughter into the country estate he inherited after his father’s suspicious death. When the daughter takes up an unlikely friendship with farmhand Lazarus, his sinister motives are slowly revealed, unleashing the dark secret of a demon child whose insatiable appetite can only be appeased by human souls.

BBC drama “A Very English Scandal” was the big winner at the BAFTA TV Craft Awards on April 29, scoring three trophies, including costume design, editing (fiction), and director (fiction) for Stephen Frears.

Distributed in the United States by Amazon, the three-part limited series starred Hugh Grant and Ben Whishaw and was based on an actual English sex scandal from the 1970s involving a Liberal Member of Parliament named Jeremy Thorpe.

BBC America’s “Killing Eve” and the Sky Atlantic/Showtime miniseries “Patrick Melrose” each took home two awards, with the former winning for original score and sound (fiction) and the latter for production design as well as writer (drama) for David Nicholls.

The wins serve as a feather in the cap for both “Killing Eve” and “A Very English Scandal,” both of which hope to make a splash in the year’s Emmy race.

Amazon’s Lord of the Rings prequel TV series has rounded out its cast and begins filming soon.

Amazon’s mysterious, purportedly billion-dollar-budgeted Lord of the Rings TV series will take place Long before the events of Peter Jackson’s movies. Setting the tone for this small screen return to the world of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, the first two episodes will be directed by J.A. Bayona, who helmed Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

The Lord of the Rings TV series is set during Middle Earth’s Second Age – that’s thousands of years before Bilbo Baggins, Gollum or Aragorn ever existed! Moreover, the end of said age was a full millennium before the Wizards even arrived in Middle Earth, which makes the series a prequel in an epochal sense.

It’s been almost eight years since the Joe Wright movie “Hanna,” which saw Saoirse Ronan transformed into a ruthless on-screen teenage killer. Now, Amazon will put a fresh spin on the story with a new TV series based on the beloved action film. Amazon released the first teaser for the series on Friday, showing the origin of this story: a baby goes missing from a hospital, presumably jumpstarting the title character’s training towards her young murderous ways.

Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman, who both appeared on AMC’s Danish import “The Killing,” will step into the roles played by Cate Blanchett and Eric Bana, respectively, in the original film. Enos is Marissa Wiegler, a powerful but enigmatic intelligence agent determined to track down Hanna (Esme Creed-Miles) after she goes off the grid. Hanna’s father Erik Heller (Kinnaman) is also trying to locate Hanna before the government can reuse her for nefarious purposes.

Viewers tuning into the new “Les Miserables” series will see a very new, very modern take on the 150-year-old French classic. The team behind the lavish BBC and Masterpiece television adaptation are sticking to Victor Hugo’s story, but have ignored the famous musical and have embraced an ethnically diverse cast, as well as regional British accents.

When the BBC and Netflix cast actors of color in another period epic, “Troy: Fall of a City,” it provoked some ire, mostly among the right-wing press and commentators. A similar group of naysayers has taken aim at the new season of “Doctor Who,” labeling it “politically correct.”

YouTube is reaching for the stars as it prepares to launch its first high-end European scripted show, a 10-part sci-fi series entitled “Origin.” The drama was commissioned from the Sony-owned London-based Left Bank Pictures, and comes from creator Mika Watkins, who developed the show after working as a development assistant at Left Bank.

“Mika joined the company on a diversity scheme around five years ago,” Left Bank’s CEO Andy Harries tells Variety. “Within a few weeks we realized that she was very bright. Almost straight away we made her a trainee script editor.”

Prior to Left Bank, Watkins wrote her first screenplay at university, a Victorian Gothic retelling of the Doctor Faustus story. “It felt like the right medium for me. After that I got into writing professionally,” she says. She also penned two episodes of scripted content, for Sky’s “Lucky Man” and the BBC’s “Troy: Fall of a City.

We talked to the cast and creator of YouTube Red's Origin, the streaming giant's next foray into original drama.

On November 14th, YouTube will combine the chocolate and peanut butter of genres with a relatively new format: the streaming service original drama.

The show is called Origin. It boasts two former Harry Potter actors in Tom Felton and Natalia Tena (the latter of whom is perhaps better known for Game of Thrones), high production values, and a new showrunning voice in Mika Watkins.

"I think it's a very versatile show," said Tom Felton when Den of Geek talked to the Origin cast and creator at last month's New York Comic Con. "I think people of all ilks will enjoy it. If you're into sci-fi, if you're in to characters, or if you're into the idea of the near distant future and what's going to be available to us.

The BBC and Netflix are sinking their fangs into “Dracula,” a major new series adaptation of the classic vampire tale from the team behind “Sherlock.”

Variety was the first to report that Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat were working on a new take on the Bram Stoker story last year, and that Sue Vertue’s Hartswood Films was set to produce. U.K. pubcaster the BBC has now commissioned three 90-minute installments. Netflix will carry the show in most markets outside the U.K.

“Dracula” marks another collaboration between Moffat and Gatiss after they combined efforts on episodes on Hartswood-produced “Sherlock.” Set in 1897, the series will revolve around the blood-drinking count from Transylvania who sets his sights on Victorian London.

Moffat and Gatiss said: “There have always been stories about great evil. What’s special about Dracula is that Bram Stoker gave evil its own hero.” Vertue quipped: “There’s nothing like fresh blood.

Exclusive: Breakout new BBC One drama Bodyguard is headed to Netflix. The streaming network will carry the terror thriller starring Game of Thrones’ Richard Madden and Line of Duty’s Keeley Hawes outside of the UK and Ireland (and China where Netflix is not available). The series’ Netflix premiere is set for October 24.

The deal for Bodyguard, produced by World Productions, an ITV Studios company, was made through Netflix’s co-licensing team. The digital platform has been a partner since the show’s early production stages.

Under its co-licensing model, Netflix is collaborating with U.S. studios and international production companies on series that air on other linear or digital networks. Netflix takes first-run global distribution in as many territories as available, coming in as a partner on projects that are going to series at a finished script or pilot stage and as early as script development.

The O.C. star Adam Brody has joined Sky’s Fast and the Furious-style drama Curfew and the show will air exclusively on Charter Communications via its Spectrum Originals in 2019.

Brody will play mysterious megalomaniac millionaire Max Larssen in the street race drama, which will air on Sky One and also stars Titanic star Billy Zane and The Hour’s Miranda Richardson. It is a high-profile get for the British pay-tv giant, which is aggressively expanding its slate of original dramas.

Exclusive: British actor David Gyasi has joined the cast of Disney’s Maleficent 2, the sequel to 2014’s $759M worldwide grosser. Angelina Jolie is reprising her role as the lead character who’s based on the nemesis first introduced in the studio’s 1959 fairy tale, Sleeping Beauty. Elle Fanning also stars in the film with Joachim Rønning directing from a script by Jez Butterworth and Linda Woolverton. Joe Roth is producing.

No TV conversation is complete anymore without the Netflix behemoth, as the service adds entire seasons to its never-ending pile on a weekly basis. While recently putting together a roundup of every TV review IndieWire has published in 2018, we came to the realization that it would probably take a lifetime to get through all the shows released in this calendar year alone.

Netflix has said it will spend upwards of $8 billion annually in programming costs. Granted, some of that goes to acquisition of previously produced content — but CFO David Wells has said Netflix will produce as much as 700 originals worldwide this year. That’s a lot of TV.

Few stories in history have such a clear starting point as the feud of Troy and Sparta, as told by Homer in the annals of Greek mythology. Netflix will follow the teen-aged exploits of King Arthur’s Lady of the Lake character in Cursed.

Netflix is pulling a sword from a stone in its upcoming original series, Cursed. Based on King Arthur’s Lady of the Lake, the project comes from comic book writer/artist Frank Miller and Puss in Boots writer/producer Tom Wheeler. The 10-episode series is based on Miller and Wheeler's upcoming illustrated young adult book, Cursed.

Cursed put a twist on the King Arthur legend, told through the eyes of the Excalibur-bestowing enchantress, the Lady of the Lake. The character is depicted here as a teenager, named Nimue, with a mysterious gift, and the coming-of-age series showcases her path to destiny. According to the plot description (via Variety), after her mother dies, Nimue joins a young mercenary named Arthur, on his quest to find the magician Merlin and deliver an ancient sword.
