Originally a book-length psychiatric case study from 1964.
The Ypsilanti State Hospital was not really in Ypsilanti. It was actually in York Township. It is now an office facility for Toyota.
Prologue: "In the 1950s, typical treatments in mental institutions were prefrontal lobotomy, insulin-induced coma, electroshock therapy, anti psychotic drugs and minimal psychotherapy." Epilogue: "Twenty years after publishing this study, the author wrote the following: 'Though I had failed to cure the Three Christs of their God-like delusions they had cured me of mine.' Despite its initial criticism, the American Psychological Association honored the study's author with its prestigious Kurt Lewin Award."
The film's premiere was at TIFF in Toronto in September 2017.
