Vivianne Pasmanter replaced Márcia Cabrita in the role of Germana only four days before filming started. She prepared herself for the role in this time and was praised by viewers and critics.
The cast visited indigenous territories such as Xingu and had Tupi-guarani classes as part of their preparation for their roles.

Marco Nanini and Marieta Severo were set to reprise their acclaimed portrayals of John VI of Portugal and Carlota Joaquina from Spain from Carlota Joaquina, Princesa do Brazil (1995) but had to turn them down due to schedule conflicts. They would also be reunited after 15 years co-starring in Big Family (2001).
