Michelle Yeoh was originally cast but had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts. The role was reworked and her former co-star, Ke Huy Quan took over.
Deadline announced in Dec. 2020 that Millie Bobby Brown will be teaming up with the Russo Brothers for her next feature film role, a science fiction movie from Universal Pictures titled The Electric State, based off of the illustrated novel of the same name by author Simon Stalenhag.
In a statement announcing the project in Dec. 2020, the Russo Brothers stressed the idea that they envision the forthcoming sci-fi adaptation to have a traditional theatrical release. That the directors made it a point to specify the latter specifically is especially notable given that Universal is one of the many studios looking to close the theatrical exclusivity window in light of theater closures due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Judging from photos taken while filming on location, this will be the first Russo Brothers film since You, Me and Dupree (2006) to be shot on 35mm film.
