Right, well the concept idea behind this Chilean sci-fi horror movie and the movie's cover definitely is what drew me in to sitting down and watching "Embrión" (aka "Embryo").
And "Embrión" is a sad hybrid - pardon the pun - of a 'found garbage' movie and a low budget sci-fi horror. Not a particularly great mixture in this case, despite of the storyline sounding really interesting.
Two-thirds of this 2020 movie was filmed with a wobbly and shaky video camera that felt like something a toddler was filming. And I absolutely despise these 'found garbage' movies as they are a waste of time, money and effort. And "Embrión" was no different.
The storyline in "Embrión" ended up being laughable at best. Sure, the synopsis sounded good and there were definitely potential here, but writers Barry Keating and Patricio Valladares just utterly dropped the ball here with this 2020 sci-fi horror, and the end result was just an abomination. No pun intended - as the part human and part alien embryo that the movie was built around would be an abomination as well.
There was no sense of continuity or a proper red thread throughout the course of "Embrión". The storyline jumped back and forth in time repeatedly, and most of the times it was just messed up by wobbly camera work. Needless to say that there was no sense of connection between the different timelines that director Patricio Valladares opted to present to the viewers.
And there never really was a sense of something extraterrestrial was ever going to make an appearance. So there was a lot of waiting around for nothing that never happened. In fact, "Embrión" felt more like a cheap zombie movie than it felt like an extraterrestrial movie.
Visually then "Embrión" felt like a low budget movie with at least the heart and spirit in the right place. There was nothing noteworthy or overly interesting to be had or enjoyed here in the visual and special effects departments. Which took away some enjoyment from the movie, I suppose.
The acting in the movie was adequate, taking into consideration the rubbish material that the actors and actresses had to work with.
My overall impression of "Embrión" was just a swing and a miss. I can't literally come up with a single reason for why I would persuade you to waste your time, money or effort on this 2020 sci-fi horror movie. My rating of "Embrión" lands on a generous two out of ten stars.
