The character of Maya's mom, Yuki Ishii-Peters, is played by actress/co-creator Maya Erskine's real-life mother Mutsuko Erskine.

Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle were both 31 years-old portraying 13 year-old versions of themselves during production; however, the rest of their classmates are played by real-life middle schoolers. This made filming the 'R-rated' scenes a bit challenging and in some cases body doubles were hired.

Even though in the series Maya and Anna are best friends in middle school, in reality they did not meet until they were in college.

In Episode #8, a group of kids watch the movie "Wild Things," mainly to see the infamous sex scenes. Co-creator Maya Erskine's real-life father, Peter Erskine, is the actual drummer on the "Wild Things" soundtrack.

Maya and Anna bonded over both having diarrhea during their junior year of studying abroad in college.
