For Late Night with the Devil star David Dastmalchian, all roads lead to and from Christopher Nolan.
In 2007, Dastmalchian was a struggling local theater actor in Chicago, and when Nolan’s The Dark Knight set up shop in the Windy City, he went through a circuitous casting process before eventually landing a part in his very first feature film. Dastmalchian played Thomas Schiff, a paranoid schizophrenic and former Arkham Asylum inmate that Heath Ledger’s The Joker disguised as his fellow honor guardsman during their infiltration of Commissioner Loeb’s funeral procession. When gunshots rang out and chaos ensued, Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) cornered Schiff in an ambulance and then forcefully interrogated him in another location.
14 years later, as Dastmalchian began to prepare for the role of the charismatic but troubled late-night talk show host Jack Delroy in Cameron and Colin Cairnes’ Late Night with the Devil, his greatest inspiration...

“Montana Story,” the latest film from longtime co-directors Scott McGhee and David Siegel, opens on chickens.
It’s an apt first note for this pastoral story, where everyday life acts as a backdrop for wrenching character backstories. The script is a touch too novelistic and the ending rather predictable, but pitch-perfect performances keep this melodrama from slipping too far into mawkishness.
The titular story is one of two estranged, 20-something siblings reunited over their comatose father. At first only Cal, played by Owen Teague (“It”), shows up to get everything in order. He struggles to pay their longtime housekeeper, Valentina; to reconcile his father’s debts; and to re-home his beloved (but now ancient) childhood horse. A seismic shock arrives in the form of his sister, Erin (the excellent Haley Lu Richardson), from whom he hasn’t heard in seven years.

Chicago – The rise of David Dastmalchian is going into the stratosphere in 2021. The actor, with roots in Chicago theater, opened this weekend (8/6/21) in the film “The Suicide Squad” as the melancholic Polka-Dot Man, and will be featured later in the year in the highly anticipated new film version of “Dune.” His comic book roots have distinct credibility, as he also helped to create the Dark Horse Comics series ”Count Crowley”, which recently was green-lit for a second series.
The characters of David Dastmalchian exist in both the Marvel Studios films and the DC Universe. He achieved blockbuster notoriety as the Russian Kurt, part of the “Antourage” in the Marvel Universe “Ant-Man” films, and has appeared in the DC series on the CW, “The Flash,” as the villain Abra Kadabra.

Ben Foster, Charmaine Bingwa, Gilbert Owuor and Mustafa Shakir have joined the cast of Antoine Fuqua’s upcoming thriller “Emancipation,” starring Will Smith.
Smith stars as Peter, a runaway slave who flees Louisiana in hopes of traveling north to freedom. “Emancipation” is inspired by the true story of “Whipped Peter,” an enslaved person who emancipated himself from a southern plantation and joined the Union Army. In 1863, photos taken of Peter during an Army medical examination first appeared in Harper’s Weekly. One image, known as “The Scourged Back,” shows the scars from a whipping on Peter’s bare back, illustrating the true cruelty of slavery and ultimately contributed to growing public opposition.
Fuqua will direct from a script by William N. Collage. Fuqua Films and Smith’s media company Westbrook Inc. are backing the project, which sold to Apple Studios for a reported $120 million.

In a world of frustratingly vague TV show titles like Reprisal, Dark, and Run, some titles have the moral courage to stand up and declare their intentions, loud and proud. Such is the case with Netflix’s latest teenage action comedy. It’s called Teenage Bounty Hunters and you will absolutely guess what it’s all about.
Teenage Bounty Hunters stars Maddie Phillips and Anjelica Bette Fellini as fraternal twins and best friends Sterling and Blair Wesley. As the show’s title so helpfully implies, Sterling and Blair are 16-year-old bounty hunters. Netflix’s full synopsis of the show reads:
“Rebelling against their buttoned-up Southern community, sixteen-year-old fraternal twin sisters Sterling (Maddie Phillips) and Blair (Anjelica Bette Fellini) Wesley team up with veteran bounty hunter Bowser Jenkins (Kadeem Hardison) for an over-the-top adventure as they dive into the world of bail skipping baddies and suburban secrets while trying to navigate high school drama — love,...

Hulu has given a straight-to-series order to Dopesick, an eight-episode limited series based on Beth Macy’s bestselling book, with Michael Keaton attached to star and executive produce. Barry Levinson is set to direct the project which hails from Empire co-creator/exec producer Danny Strong, The Handmaid’s Tale executive producer Warren Littlefield and Fox 21 Television Studios.
Written by Strong and slated to premiere in 2021, Dopesick is described as an ambitious, harrowing, and compelling look into the epicenter of America’s struggle with Opioid addiction. It takes viewers from a distressed Virginia mining community, to the hallways of the DEA, and to the opulence of “one percenter” Big Pharma Manhattan. The unsparing yet deeply human portraits of the various affected families and their intersecting stories hold up a mirror to where America is right now, while shining a hopeful light on the heroes battling the worst drug epidemic in American history.

Early in its life, Hulu found huge success in acquiring and promoting itself as the home for old fare such as “Seinfeld” and “The Golden Girls.” But those classic libraries have become even more valuable for streaming services — Netflix paid at least $500 million to grab exclusive rights to “Seinfeld,” while soon-to-launch HBO Max will now share “Rick and Morty” with Hulu, while shows like “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” will co-exist on both Hulu and NBCU’s new Peacock service.
Speaking to reporters at the Television Critics Assn. press tour on Friday, Hulu scripted originals senior VP Craig Erwich noted how the availability of certain shows will be shifting around over the next few years, but downplayed the impact of losing exclusive rights to those shows.
“I don’t know that exclusivity is paramount,” he said of the library shows. “One show does not make a service. What’s important for us is...

“Reprisal” actress Abigail Spencer says she would be interested in another “Timeless” film, should the opportunity arise. She also discussed her experience working on her new Hulu project, which premiered on the streaming service on Dec. 6.
“If we could do a ‘Timeless’ movie every couple of years or around the holidays, how fun would that be? I just think it’s so unique. It was canceled twice, brought back twice by the fans and then we made a movie. I don’t know, who does that?” Spencer told anchor Audrey Yap on Daily Variety. “I feel like anything goes, and I love that cast, and I love everyone in that world. I love that families love it — like my son’s 11, and he loves the show.”
In “Reprisal,” Spencer plays Doris Quinn/Katherine Harlow, a woman out for revenge against a gang that tried to kill her. The actor, whose...

Jodie Turner Smith
Jodie Turner Smith’s “Queen & Slim” co-star, the sort-of Bonnie to his Clyde in Melina Matsoukas’s lush, Americana odyssey, told TheWrap he was amazed by Smith’s grace and presence to hold the camera. She further told TheWrap she was initially nervous meeting Kaluuya for the first time having been such a fan of his work, but the two demonstrated instant chemistry on and off screen. "I'm kind of tired of staying quiet about it."
Massoud went on to explain, "People have these ideas in their head. It's like, I'm sitting here being like, Ok, Aladdin just hit $1 billion. Can I at least get an audition?
