Exclusive: Marvel’s Moon Knight Director Mohamed Diab has revealed fresh details about his new feature Lion, starring Egyptian megastar Mohamed Ramadan in a role inspired by Ancient Rome rebel slave Spartacus.
“It’s a period piece, a kind of Spartacus meets Braveheart set in 1850s Egypt,” said Diab, talking to Deadline on the fringes of Egypt’s El Gouna Film Festival.
Currently mid-way through shooting in Cairo, Lion marks Diab’s first picture back in his native Egypt since 2016 breakthrough Clash. In between times, he made the Palestine-set drama Amira, followed by directing Moon Knight for Marvel.
Diab has revealed very little about the new movie, which was originally announced under the title of Black Lion and is being billed as his most ambitious Arab-language production to date.
“It’s about slavery in the 1850s. It’s an epic film. It’s not based on a real person but inspired by true events.

“I’m still a mother to the depths of my soul. Not according to your values, but mine,” spats Maryam, the conflicted protagonist of “Seven Days,” Ali Samadi Ahadi‘s latest feature. “Seven Days” made its world premiere as a Centrepiece film at Toronto International Film Festival as one of two Mohammad Rassoulof-written films this year.
Seven Days screened at Toronto International Film Festival
Like many social realist Iranian films, Ali Samadi Ahadi’s “Seven Days” is perplexing. Tehran-based women’s rights activist Maryam (Vishka Asayesh) is granted a seven-day medical leave from her six-year prison sentence. Maryam’s brother (Sina Parvaneh) and husband Behnam (Majid Bakhtiari) have other plans for her, however. They roll out an intrepid scheme to smuggle her out of the country so she can join her husband and two children in Germany, thus making her brief reprieve from prison permanent.
At first, Maryam chafes against the idea.

Director David Gordon Green’s “Nutcrackers,” starring Ben Stiller, will be the opening night film at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. Rebel Wilson’s directorial debut “The Deb” will close the 49th edition.

Nutcrackers, David Gordon Green’s heartfelt comedy starring Ben Stiller, is set to open the 2024 Toronto Film Festival on Sept. 5.
The TIFF opener — marking Stiller’s first starring role in a movie since Mike White’s Brad’s Status and Noah Baumbach’s Netflix family drama The Meyerowitz Stories in 2017 — will have a world premiere at Roy Thomson Hall, which is filled with ordinary moviegoers (and not only industry people as in Cannes and Venice).
Written by Leland Douglas, Nutcrackers follows Mike (Stiller), a straight-laced workaholic who has to travel to rural Ohio to care for his four nephews after their parents die in a car accident. After weeks of farm-life mayhem, Mike realizes he won’t have to find a new home for the orphaned children. They found a new home for him.

Jason Patel is excellent as drag queen Aysha in Sally El Hosaini’s new film, but the scenes where Aysha visits her parents as Ashiq really steal the show
Welsh-Egyptian film-maker Sally El Hosaini made a supremely confident debut in 2012 with My Brother the Devil, about a young gay Muslim drug dealer in Hackney. After following up with last year’s refugee drama The Swimmers, she is back exploring queer south Asian culture. Co-directing Unicorns with James Krishna Floyd (the star of My Brother the Devil), who wrote the script, El Hosaini brings a streak of hopefulness to gritty social realism, with the added attraction of superstar drag queens.
At the centre of the film are a pair of heartfelt performances. Ben Hardy is Luke, a straight white mechanic struggling to bring up his five-year-old son as a single dad. One night, Luke accidentally finds himself on the dancefloor of...

After capturing the hearts of audiences and critics alike at BFI Flare earlier this year, Unicorns arrives in UK cinemas this week. Loosely-inspired by the story of Asifa Lahore, Britain’s first out Muslim drag queen, the culture-clash romance also represents a number of firsts for its co-directors, Sally El Hosaini and James Krishna Floyd, as well as its stars, Ben Hardy and Jason Patel.
Hardy stars as Luke, a single father whose life is taken up with his job as a mechanic and his high-spirited five year old son. But when he stumbles on an underground club playing Asian dance music, he’s immediately fascinated by a flirtatious dancer who goes by the name of Aysha (Patel). The passionate kiss that follows makes it apparent that Aysha isn’t the person Luke had assumed, but the attraction is so powerful, he’s soon juggling his life with acting as her driver.

British actor Ben Hardy, whose credits include “X-Men: Apocalypse,” “Bohemian Rhapsody” and Netflix’s “Love at First Sight,” is one of the leads in upcoming film “Unicorns.”
Co-directed by BAFTA nominee Sally El Hosaini (“The Swimmers”) and her long-standing collaborator James Krishna Floyd, from a script written by Floyd, the film follows a queer South Asian club performer (Jason Patel) living a double life who meets Luke, a straight, single-father mechanic, with whom unexpected sparks begin to fly.
Hardy, who plays Luke in the LGBTQ+ romantic drama, was drawn to the project by the unique story and the opportunity to work with director El Hosaini. “It was a challenging role for me, something I’d never played before,” Hardy said of portraying Luke, a working-class mechanic who enters the world of “gaysian” clubs in London.
“We spent hours and hours going through Luke, going through the script and story,” Hardy said.

In her 2022 Toronto curtain raiser “The Swimmers,” telling the true story of two Syrian sisters and their emotional and gruelling journey to Europe to escape the civil war, director Sally El-Hossaini went to great lengths to ensure authenticity, using real-life refugees both in-front of and behind the camera.
For Counterpoints Arts, the U.K. charity that focusses on culture and migration, “The Swimmers” offered a great example of how projects involving refugees and migrants could — and should — be developed. As the organization’s co-founder and director Almir Koldzic explains to Variety, El-Hossaini made sure that “people with lived experiences were represented on every level of production and were respected in that process.”
Since it launched in 2012, Counterpoints has worked alongside the U.K. arts scene as part of its efforts to “inspire social change and enhance inclusion and cultural integration,” putting on numerous film screenings concerning the subject, many during the annual Refugee Week,...

In a different world, had she not been readying her long-awaited sophomore feature, “On Becoming a Guinea Fowl,” for its Cannes premiere, Rungano Nyoni might have spent the past few weeks preparing her family for its upcoming move to Zambia, the southern African nation where the director was born and spent part of her childhood. Instead, it was a mad dash to get the film across the finish line.

In the snowy hills of Park City this year, North Korea refugee documentary “Beyond Utopia” made a splash. This 115-minute feature keeps its viewers at the edge of their seats. In follows the harrowing defection journeys for the Roh family, which includes two children and an octogenarian, and records the brutal capture and torture of Soyeon Lee's son at the North Korean border.
Throughout the course of the film, the proximity to the subject material is quite jarring. The American film crew witnesses the Roh family and Pastor Kim, their South Korean guardian, through the Yalu River, China, the jungles of Laos, and eventually reaching the Thai shores of the Mekong River.
Now, in light of awards season, we revisit our own close encounter with the team – an in-person interview with producers Sue Mi Terry, Rachel Cohen, and documentary subjects Pastor Kim and Soyeon Lee – at the Larsen office in San Francisco.

On the way home after a party-ending brawl, Aysha (Jason Patel) explains to Luke (Ben Hardy) the torrid love triangle that precipitated the fight in the first place. It sounds complicated, Luke remarks, but Aysha counters that it’s actually pretty simple: “Everybody just wants what they can’t have.”
Despite her breezy delivery, the statement seems to hang in the air between them. Because by this point, both Luke and Aysha already know on some level what they want. They just have to allow themselves to have it. Unicorns traces their twin journeys toward self-acceptance with empathy, curiosity and a refreshing disregard for constricting labels.
What stands between the central pair is not a lack of desire, but a clash of identities. Luke is a straight white single dad from Essex who scrapes together a modest living as a mechanic; Aysha is a professional drag queen from Manchester hiding...

Welsh-Egyptian director Sally El Hosaini had the opening night film at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival with “The Swimmers,” a Netflix drama about two would-be Olympic swimmers fleeing Syria for a chance to compete in Europe. She’s back at the festival a year later with “Unicorns,” codirected with James Krishna Floyd. It’s a quieter, less rousing drama that in some ways couldn’t be further from “The Swimmers,” but in other ways shares that earlier film’s determination to find moments of happiness and celebration in the midst of struggle.
“Unicorns” is a work designed to bring empathy for its two lead characters, a scruffy auto mechanic trying to raise a young son by himself and a British-Asian drag queen looking for moments of release in a life of hardship. At times it finds El Hosaini holding beats for too long, as she also did in “The Swimmers,...

Canadian phone giant Bell, lead sponsor of the Toronto Film Festival since 1995 and with its name on the event’s year-round home Bell Lightbox, is set to exit the marquee event’s red carpet with its flashbulbs and A-listers after the upcoming 48th edition.
“Earlier this year, we decided that the end of 2023 would be the right time to step back from our partnership with TIFF and opted not to renew our sponsorship in order to invest in other opportunities that are core to our business,” Bell spokesperson Ellen Murphy told The Hollywood Reporter in a statement on Saturday.
TIFF organizers confirmed the phone and media giant will end financial ties at the end of the year. “Earlier this year, we mutually agreed that this partnership would come to a close at the end of 2023. Japanese anime legend Hayao Miyazaki’s much anticipated final film, now titled The Boy and the Heron in English, is set to open the Toronto Film Festival with a toned-down star presence on Sept. 7.
Studio Ghibli’s mysterious epic feature — with hand-drawn animation from Miyazaki — will have an international premiere at Roy Thomson Hall after being release in theaters in Japan on July 14. Gkids plans a theatrical release in North America later this year.
Studio Ghibli previously described the film as “a grand fantasy” loosely inspired by Japanese author Genzaburo Yoshino’s 1937 novel How Do You Live?, a coming-of-age story about the emotional and philosophical development of a young boy after the death of his father.
Studio Ghibli, which Miyazaki co-founded, has screened earlier titles in Toronto including The Red Turtle (2016), The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (2014), The Wind Rises (2013), From Up on Poppy Hill (2011), Spirited Away (2002) and Princess Mononoke...

BAFTA is an independent arts charity that comprises thousands of industry insiders, much like the American motion picture academy. The BAFTAs could well give us a preview of what the Oscars might do in three weeks time on March 12. And since voting for Oscars starts on March 2, just 11 days after the BAFTAs, these awards could be doubly influential.
However, the BAFTAs amended their nominations voting as of last year. After the initial longlists were decided, the nominees for acting and directing were chosen by small juries, leveling the playing field between the highest-profile awards contenders and worthy underdogs.
