There are a few nods to 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off' other than the lead actor himself, Matthew Broderick. One being an altering of the famous line, "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." Josh Wheeler, states "Things are mutating fast around here. If you stop and look around, you may get eaten." Others include the teacher droning "Wheeler" at the beginning of episode 1, Josh driving a red Ferrari, and Josh's character frequently breaking the 4th wall to address the viewers.

Josh drives a car with the license plate "FURYRD", a reference to Mad Max: Fury Road.

This series is filmed in Albuquerque, NM, (The series is set in Glendale, CA) The apartment one of the characters lives in is "Paradise Cove." This is the same apartment used in "El Camino, A Breaking Bad Movie."

Sophie Simnett's character's name Sam Dean could be seen as a reference to the lead characters of Supernatural (2005) Sam and Dean Winchester. Colin Ford (Josh Wheeler) played Young Sam Winchester on Supernatural from 2007-2016. Even so, the name is a coincidence and was chosen before Ford was cast as Josh.
