Sally Rooney recently stunned the entertainment world when in a newspaper interview, she said her experience of adapting her much-loved coming-of-age novel Normal People for the BBC and Hulu left her feeling like TV was “not a world where I belonged.” Accordingly, the in-demand writer has since said no to offers to option her third book, 2021’s Beautiful World, Where Are You. The same will be likely for her latest, Intermezzo.
Rooney’s decision was especially surprising given the TV market has been so driven by book IP, with option prices rising sharply and demand bigger than ever. In fact, around a year ago, we hear drama commissioners put out a call to TV makers. The broad message was “IP over original ideas as often as possible.” While books have long been the engine of television and film, the notion everything must come with proof of concept has shifted the dial.

Before the premiere of "The Acolyte" earlier this year, many people wouldn't have recognized the name Manny Jacinto. Born in the Philippines and raised in Canada, the Filipino actor had very few roles to his name, though he had garnered a burgeoning fanbase for his work on "The Good Place." But once you enter a galaxy far, far away, it's hard not to become quickly recognizable. In his surprising dual role as both Qimir and the mysterious Stranger, Jacinto solidified himself as one of the most promising young stars working in Hollywood. Nobody could get enough of his steely looks and toned physique, which made it all the more tragic when "The Acolyte" was canceled after only one season.
Don't worry! Jacinto has surely secured future work for himself –- it's not often you get two breakout roles in one career –- but those looking for more from this multifaceted...

Nicole Kidman will return in the second season of the Hulu series “Nine Perfect Strangers.” The Australian actress attracted wide audiences and critical acclaim for her portrayal of Masha Dmitrichenko in the first season.

There are actors who like to work and actors who love to work. Nicole Kidman has always belonged in the latter group. But lately, the two-time Emmy winner’s rigorous efforts to entertain have started to backfire. People are taking issue with her performances, her projects, and the overlap in each — specifically, when it comes to TV. What began as mere observations of chance similarities have escalated in recent months to reverberating reproach. Is Kidman making too much TV? Too much bad TV? Or is she simply a victim of timing and circumstance, as all famous and assiduous thespians are at one point or another?
Solving the problem begins by recognizing there is one, and in Kidman’s near-decade of steady TV work, patterns have emerged. Many of her TV picks — starting with HBO’s “Big Little Lies” in 2017 and running through this September’s Netflix series, “The Perfect Couple” — have been book adaptations.

On the impeccably white sandy beaches of Nantucket, the wedding of the year is about to happen. Amelia Sacks (Eve Hewson) is preparing to marry Benji Winbury (Billy Howle), the son of the glamorous and monied Winbury family, headed by icy matriarch Greer (Nicole Kidman.) A famous novelist with cash to spare, she doesn’t approve of her son’s fiance. But before the festivities can begin, a body is discovered on the beach. In a wedding party full of people with their own secrets, it falls upon Nantucket’s chief of police, Dan Carter (Michael Beach), to investigate.
It’s surprising that it’s taken this long for someone to adapt an Elin Hilderbrand novel into a binge-ready TV series. Known as “the Queen of the beach reads,” Hilderbrand’s Nantucket-set sagas are loaded with sex, scandals, rich people problems and interior decor porn that would put Nancy Meyers to shame.

When Tell Me Lies debuted in the fall of 2022, no one was sure how it would do. The Hulu series, about a toxic relationship between two students at a fictional college, was the first project to come out of Emma Roberts’ adaptation-focused first-look deal at the streamer and featured a cast of relatively unknown — at the time — actors. But then, very quickly, star Grace Van Patten began to notice something strange; when she walked around Los Angeles with Jackson White (who plays the other half of the aforementioned toxic relationship), girls were rolling down their car windows or stopping them on the sidewalk to scream at her to get away from White, as if the world of the show were real.

When Alfonso Cuarón won best director and picture in 2019 with his brilliant, heartbreaking black-and-white “Roma,” its two-plus-hour length and panoramic scope hinted that the movie could have easily been expanded into a series. His first project since that Spanish-language film is a seven-part slowburn thriller for Apple TV+. “Disclaimer” shares elements with that film: the struggle at the shore to save a son from drowning, the marital tensions percolating beneath the surface, and the power of memory to distort and reveal.
Because of this, the five-time Oscar winner seems like a natural fit to create a longer narrative with more time to ebb and flow, backed by the deeper pockets of Apple TV+. His choice is “Disclaimer,” a psychological thriller adapted from Renee Knight’s contemporary women’s fiction. Nicole Kidman played the role of a damsel in distress in Joel Schumacher’s first of the two least-favorite Batman movies, Batman Forever. Before Kidman was chosen, the producers wanted Rene Russo to star opposite her One Good Cop co-star Michael Keaton. However, Keaton dropped out of the project and Val Kilmer replaced him, making Russo too old to be paired with Kilmer.

Kidman’s role didn’t make much impact and the film didn’t receive good reviews. Nevertheless, the Eyes Wide Shut actress had her own reasons for accepting a DC role. She revealed that it was more about her trying out different roles than about the hefty paychecks for such movies.

Nicole Kidman said in a new interview with L’Officiel that she’s never just seeking a paycheck whenever she decides to star in a major Hollywood tentpole. Given the Oscar winner is acclaimed for her work in indie films and dramas, she always gets questioned whenever she signs on to star in big movies like the “Aquaman” franchise or 1995’s “Batman Forever.”
“Everyone’s like, ’Why are you doing that?’” Kidman recalled about the confusion her “Batman Forever” casting as Dr. Chase Meridian. “I’m like, ‘Because I get to kiss Batman!’…The thing people don’t understand is, it’s not about the check. A lot of the mainstream big blockbusters that I do are hopefully different.”
Kidman got the same questions when she signed on to star as Queen Atlanna in “Aquaman,” a role she reprised in the sequel “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.” Surely she did not...

Lit agent Claire Lundberg came to the defense of the U.S. studios during a debate on the books-to-tv business here in Edinburgh this morning.
Lundberg, CEO and founder of Paris-based Ctl Scouting, said, “American studios get dinged for buying a lot and not making a whole lot,” but that this didn’t always reflect the reality.
Writers or preferred producers being unavailable, or debates with the work’s author are among the issues that can slow down development after an option, she said, adding: “It’s like pushing jello up a hill.”
Talking on a panel about literary IP here at the Edinburgh TV Festival this morning, Lundberg said that between “40-50%” of everything on television is adapted from existing IP, even with prices rising massively over recent years.
Hilary Strong, CEO of International Literary Properties, concurred, saying: “In a difficult market, having titles and authors does help to elevate a pitch.

As Agnes van Rhijn in The Gilded Age, Christine Baranski embodies a New York matriarch bound by stringent class division and societal contest—something the show’s creator Julian Fellowes so famously explored within the British aristocracy in Downton Abbey. Baranski conveys both generations of painful suppression and a wry humor as Van Rhijn—a woman upholding a family legacy while supporting her sister (Cynthia Nixon), niece (Louisa Jacobson) and son (Blake Ritson).
A two-time Tony winner, an Emmy winner and 16-time nominee, here Baranski talks shooting Season 3 and reveals juicy details about her upcoming Season 2 of Nine Perfect Strangers with Nicole Kidman.
Deadline: Last time we sat down for a proper chat was for The Good Fight. What a show…

Christine Baranski puts in the work. The 16-time Emmy nominee, up for her latest trophy as supporting actress in a drama for The Gilded Age, is spending her summer filming the HBO series’ third season shrouded in all the stifling accoutrements that the period piece requires.
During a day off from production, the actress emphasized that she’ll happily suffer for art. But Baranski, who’ll also soon star in season two of Hulu’s Nine Perfect Strangers alongside Nicole Kidman, was quick to think of sets with more liberating costumes. Namely, Mamma Mia! The musical adaptation of the Abba songbook spawned a movie, a sequel and, most recently, talk of No. 3. Baranski confirmed she’s dined with franchise lead Judy Craymer, and things are in the works and a proposed story is in place. “We’ll all be on some fabulous Greek or Croatian island having a blast,” says Baranski.
