The longest-serving actor on Law & Order is set to work his last case.
Sam Waterston, who has been part of the NBC drama since 1994, is leaving the show. His final episode as Manhattan District Attorney Jack McCoy is set to air Feb. 22. Tony Goldwyn (Scandal, Oppenheimer) will then join Law & Order as the new Da.
The 83-year-old Waterston joined L&o at the beginning of its fifth season. He’ll depart partway through his 19th season on the series, having appeared in more than 400 episodes as McCoy, who began on the series as an assistant district attorney. The character was appointed interim Da in season 17 and was revealed to have won the elected position of district attorney in the 20th and final season of the show’s original 1990-2010 run. Waterston reprised the character when NBC revived Law & Order in 2022, serving as a link to the original show.

The Best Comedy Series Casting Emmy category is one where repeat wins should generally not be expected, since the only show to achieve that feat in well over a decade was “Veep” in 2016 and 2017. Most of Gold Derby’s participating users seem to have kept this in mind while making their 2023 Emmy picks, given that former casting winners “Ted Lasso” (2021) and “Abbott Elementary” (2022) are trailing new shows “The Bear” and “Jury Duty” in the current race. However, there is still no obvious consensus among them as to which freshman series will actually take the gold.
The final slot in this year’s comedy casting lineup is filled by “Only Murders in the Building,” which, like “Abbott Elementary,” was first recognized here last year. After 2000, 2007, and 2021, this is only the fourth time that every nominated show in this category consists of no more than three seasons. In addition to “Ted Lasso,...

ABC is in negotiations with Ellie Kemper (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) to headline Motherland, a comedy pilot based on the British series. Karan Soni (Deadpool franchise) has been tapped for a lead in the project, from writer Julieanne Smolinski, Sharon Horgan and Clelia Mountford’s Merman Television, Paul Feig’s Feigco Entertainment, Lionsgate and ABC Signature. Michael Showalter (The Big Sick) has come on board to direct.
Written by Smolinski, Motherland centers on Julia (the role Kemper has been in talks for over the past several weeks), a working mom for whom nothing is working so she goes looking for her village. With the help of new friends Calvin (Soni) and Liz, Julia discovers she just might succeed at balancing work and parenting from time to time. This is a comedy for anybody who’s dropped their kids at school, breathed a sigh of relief…then realized it’s Sunday.

Inside the walls of AdirondACTS — just four hours from New York City, as a musical number will later reveal — young thespians can spend summers developing their craft among likeminded kids without fear of being ridiculed by those unversed in the dramatic arts. It’s in this land where misfits rule supreme that the sidesplitting and largely improvised mockumentary “Theater Camp” sets its stage.

The recent rise of anti-Semitism in public discourse — driven in large part by Kanye West — has so alarmed President Joe Biden that he took to Twitter on Dec. 2. “The Holocaust happened. Hitler was a demonic figure,” he wrote. “Silence is complicity.”
When THR crossed paths with Ben Platt recently, he said the same.

That said, he adds, “If anyone happens to read this and wants to say something, either through a simple or even passive showing of support, it means a lot to Jewish people right now who are feeling a little left in the lurch.

The People We Hate at the Wedding is a comedy movie directed by Claire Scanlon, starring Kristen Bell, Allison Janney and Tony Goldwyn.
Weddings tend to be the kind of celebration where everybody tries to be at their best and everything has to go smoothly, but end up being events where nothing turns out as planned. In this movie both in its story, and its cinematic representation, we are witnessing more or less the same tendency.
Premise
Alice (Kristen Bell), her brother Paul (Ben Platt) and her forever optimistic mother (Allison Janney) travel across the pond to England to attend the wedding of their half-sister, on mom’s side, Eloise (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) with the intention of rekindling their sibling bonds in a more or less grown manner and recover the affection they once had for each other.

“The People We Hate at the Wedding” gave fans a surprise mini-reunion of “The Good Place,” with the unexpected appearance of D’Arcy Carden in the Kristen Bell-starring comedy. But according to Bell, there was no one else she’d have wanted for the moment.
It happens fairly early in the movie, now streaming on Prime Video, and quite suddenly. In the scene, Alice (Bell) is leaving a sultry note for her boss/lover. She’s hoping to leave the panties she’s wearing with the note but as she goes to take them off, a cleaning woman appears to water the boss’ plants. That woman, of course, is none other than D’Arcy Carden. And she’s not phased by what’s happening at all. In fact, she just wants to help.
She jokes that the problem Alice is facing is that she accidentally only put one leg through...

Based on the novel of the same name by Grant Ginder, director Clare Scanlon (“Set It Up”) returns to the world of romantic comedies with the charmless, vaguely holiday-set “The People We Hate at the Wedding”. Adapted by Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin, there is little here to recommend in a film that once upon a time would have been destined for the bargain bin.

Kristen Bell and Ben Platt play siblings in Claire Scanlon’s “The People We Hate at the Wedding.” Based on Grant Grinder’s novel, the film is a fun deconstruction of a functioning dysfunctional family. “The People We Hate at the Wedding” is now available on Amazon Prime Video. https://youtu.be/zG_KeDjYM0A Dustin Milligan stars in “The People

No joke: Claire Scanlon knows what’s funny. The seasoned comedy director and editor has helmed episodes of everything from “The Good Place” and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” to “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and “Bless This Mess.” She produced “Last Comic Standing.” She edited “American Masters” episodes about Bob Newhart and Carol Burnett.
And she, in no small part, helped herald the re-emergence of the rom-com thanks to her 2018 smash Netflix film “Set It Up.”
Ever-busy (the director generously Zoomed with IndieWire from the very first day of production on ABC’s new sitcom “Not Dead Yet”), Scanlon is back in the film groove with another streaming feature: Amazon’s ensemble comedy “The People We Hate at the Wedding.” And while she said she was offered “a lot” of rom-coms after the success of “Set It Up,” she’s still working through her feelings on the genre. Mostly, Scanlon is compelled by one thing: cracking that comedy code,...

Prime Video debuted the film ‘The People We Hate At The Wedding’, a romantic comedy about two dysfunctional American siblings (Alice and Paul) who use the British wedding of their estranged half-sister as an opportunity to reconnect with each other and rediscover the love they once shared. Kristen Bell, the lead in the film, stars as the chaotic main character Alice. The fact that she is having an affair with her married employer, that she refuses to settle down, and that she is stuck in a job she hates only makes things worse. The film takes you on a thrilling ride with all of its unexpected turns.
Kristen Bell while talking about the film, says, “It is biting, it is whip smart, it is raunchy, but there is this familial joy about it. And I liked the idea of being involved with something where someone could escape and sit and watch this with their family.

The term “romantic comedy” these days covers a lot of light entertainments that only notionally meet the genre requirements: They pivot on relationships while just glancing at romance, and are packed with dialogue that’s zappily delivered but not all that funny. “The People We Hate at the Wedding” is one such nonromcom. Sporting a game cast and efficient sitcommy pacing, it looks and sounds the part just enough to keep you diverted — until you notice, as the credits roll to upbeat electropop, that you haven’t laughed once. Starring Kristen Bell, Ben Platt and Allison Janney as the blundering American relatives lowering the tone of a posh English wedding, this straight-to-streaming Amazon release attempts to bring a faintly risqué, expletive-laden millennial sensibility to Nancy Meyers terrain, and never quite finds the sweet spot.

The first scene Kristen Bell shot in Claire Scanlon’s new comedy, The People We Hate at the Wedding, is one that more than a few might describe as a bit of a nightmare.
“It was 7 a.m. and they threw me in the Thames River,” Bell explained with a smile on Wednesday night while standing on the red carpet in Westwood, host of the Prime Video premiere. “That river is neither warm nor clean but the minute we were done with that scene, we realized, oh, the rest of the movie is going to be a breeze.”
Call it a reward for a dirty job done early, the rest of Bell’s experience on the film played like a “dream come true.” That was thanks, in large part, to her co-stars. Based on the book by Grant Ginder and penned by writer-producer...

The invitation is extravagant: sturdy paper, elegant typeface, a hint of rosemary perfume. On it a generous request, although to Alice (Kristen Bell) and Paul (Ben Platt), it reads as a threat: The pleasure of their company? To celebrate the marriage of their rich half-sister, Eloise (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) to her equally wealthy fiancé Ollie (House of the Dragon’s John MacMillan)? “It would be an honor to have you there,” says the accompanying handwritten note. Alice and Paul — fierce in their disdain for their estranged sibling, dramatic in their expressions — would rather set themselves on fire.
But they won’t. They will fly to London, where Eloise lives, and attend the wedding. They will acknowledge their sibling’s nuptials and make small talk with her future in-laws. They will show up in the most literal sense of the phrase, but they certainly won’t be happy about it.

A short, patchy, straight-to-streaming piece of semi-amusing content that tries to fit several different romantic-comedies into a single movie that doesn’t have the bandwidth (or the interest) to mine any of them for major sources of romance or comedy, .
Some of them should be so lucky.
At one point, during what can only be described as the worst bachelorette party ever conceived in movies and/or real life, Kristen Bell is submerged in the River Thames on a crisp fall afternoon while dressed in nothing but an American flag bikini (and that’s before the activity goes wrong). At another, Ben Platt pisses on iconic “No Fear, No Die” star Isaach de Bankolé out of spite, which is not a sentence I ever expected to write.
These are the kind of scenes that make you hope the movie’s cast is having more fun than their characters, and that...

A star-studded cast in front of and behind the camera power “The People We Hate at the Wedding,” Prime Video’s answer to the blockbuster romantic comedy.
Adapted from Grant Ginder’s 2017 novel of the same name, this quirky comedic film stars Oscar and Emmy winner Allison Janney, Golden Globe nominee Kristen Bell and Tge winner Ben Platt, along with César winner Isaach De Bankolé and “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” star Cynthia Addai-Robinson. It is written by Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin and Wendy Molyneaux (“Bob’s Burgers”) and directed by Emmy winner Claire Scanlon (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine”).
It’s an impressive crew that brings a great deal to the table, but what they don’t manage to bring to this comedy is much of a sense of fun.

Kristen Bell Shares Her Secret To Marriage With Dax Shepard Ahead Of 10 Year Anniversary (Exclusive)
After almost 10 years of wedded bliss, Kristen Bell is sharing her secret to marriage with Dax Shepard.
Et’s Cassie Dilaura spoke to Bell at the premiere of her new film, “The People We Hate at the Wedding” — out Nov. 18 — where she revealed the simple thing that’s kept their union so strong nearly a decade later.
“Stay vulnerable,” Bell shared. “At least my secret. You’ve gotta be vulnerable — we have to be vulnerable when we don’t want to be. That’s what works for us.”
There are no plans in place just yet for how they’ll celebrate the major milestone, but the Veronica Mars alum did say she would be up for a vow renewal.
“Yeah, why not?” Bell said, adding that she and Shepard, who tied the knot in Oct. 2013, would likely opt for an intimate affair at home with their two daughters, Lincoln, 9 and Delta,...

There’s always people we hate at weddings. A relatable theme that sets the tone and premise for this brand new comedy, aptly titled, The People We Hate at the Wedding. To mark the release of the film – which launches on Prime Video – we had the pleasure in speaking to several of the cast-members that make up this production. Below you can watch video interviews with Kristen Bell and Ben Platt paired, as they talk about their real-life friendship and playing siblings within the movie.
We also talk to Cynthia Addai-Robinson who talks about her character and the family dynamics from within the film – while of course talking a little about The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Finally we finish up with Dustin Milligan, and he speaks about improvising, what songs get him on the dancefloor – and naturally a little on Schitt’s Creek, too. Because why not.

In her new movie "The People We Hate at the Wedding," Kristen Bell plays a character who's a major mess. Alice is having an affair with her married boss, she refuses to settle down, and she's working a job she hates. It's quite different from where Bell finds herself - married, with two kids and a thriving career. But she tells Popsugar it still wasn't a stretch to get into her character's mindset.
"I think about making bad decisions each and every day, each and every moment," Bell says. "So it was very easy. There's a properly dysfunctional person that lives inside my head." She adds that the character's surroundings always help too; it was easy for her to channel Alice's insecurities when she's in her sterile office environment talking to her boss, for example.
Bell loves the movie because it's "so heartfelt, but not saccharine." She explains, "It is biting,...

There's a major reason why Ben Platt signed on to Prime Video's "The People We Hate at the Wedding." "I was really hungry to play a queer character and, specifically, a gay character and to get to play something very close to my own experience and my own age and my own demographic," he tells Popsugar.
In the new comedy, Platt plays Paul, the youngest sibling of three. He and his sister Alice, played by Kristen Bell, are resentful they have to travel across the pond for the wedding of their seemingly perfect half-sister Eloise ("The Rings of Power"'s Cynthia Addai-Robinson). Their mother, played by Alison Janney, just wants them all to come together, but Paul and Alice bring their baggage with them - with major consequences. The movie is based on the 2016 novel by Grant Ginder, with a screenplay from "Bob's Burgers" writers Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin and Wendy Molyneux.

One Rings Of Power Actor Had No Clue About The 'Amazing Twist' Her Character Experiences [Exclusive]
Major spoilers ahead for "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power." You've been warned!
"The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" recently completed its first season on Prime Video. Based on the supplemental works of author J.R.R. Tolkien, the show takes place thousands of years before the Peter Jackson trilogies. This part of the fictional world's history is set before the fall of the island nation of Númenor, currently ruled by Queen Regent Tar Míriel, played by Cynthia Addai-Robinson.
Míriel has quite an arc this season, dealing with an ailing father, her nation's distrust of elves when Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) shows up on her shores, and a trip to Middle-earth to aid in the fight against an unknown enemy who ends up being Sauron (Charlie Vickers), masquerading as a man named Halbrand. During the battle against the orcs in the Southlands (now officially called Mordor), the volcano Mount Doom explodes,...

Spoilers ahead for season 1 of "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power."
Cynthia Addai-Robinson has spent a lot of time in the fantasy realm. She played Naevia in "Spartacus," Amanda Waller in "Arrow," and now Tar-Míriel in Prime Video's "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power," which just completed its first season. Now she's starring in the Prime Video comedy "The People We Hate at the Wedding" along with Kristen Bell ("The Good Place"), Allison Janney ("Mom"), and Ben Platt ("Dear Evan Hansen"). The film tells the story of Eloise (Addai-Robinson), who clashes with her family on the eve of her wedding. It's a big departure in terms of recent projects, and a whole lot of fun.
I got a chance to speak to Addai-Robinson about her role in the film, working with comedy heavy hitters, and how she's been speaking with a British accent for quite a while now.

How can Amazon Prime Video followup the first season finale of its biggest series ever in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power? The answer lies in its list of new releases for November 2022.
Understandably, Prime Video is probably pretty tired and won’t be opting for any more Middle-earth spectacle for awhile. In its place, however, are a couple of still intriguing Amazon Original series. British Western drama series The English is set to arrive on Nov. 11 to both Prime Video and BBC Two. Emily Blunt stars as a woman who heads to the American West in 1890 looking for revenge on the man she sees as responsible for the death of her son. Cool! Speaking of the English, the James Corden-starring Mammals also premieres on Nov. 11.

Oscar winner Allison Janney has a very special set of skills — including how to kick ass.
For the Netflix action film “Lou,” Janney stars as the titular retired vigilante whose life is interrupted after a desperate mother (Jurnee Smollett) begs her to help save her kidnapped daughter. Per an official synopsis: “As a massive storm rages, the two women risk their lives on a rescue mission that will test their limits and expose dark and shocking secrets from their pasts.”
Logan Marshall-Green, Matt Craven, and Ridley Asha Bateman also star in the film, directed by Anna Foerster (“Underworld: Blood Wars”) from a script by Maggie Cohn and Jack Stanley. Bad Robot’s JJ Abrams, Hannah Minghella, and Jon Cohen are producing, with lead stars Janney and Emmy nominee Smollett executive producing. Lindsey Weber, behind Prime Video’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” is also serving as an executive producer.
