The Greek government has further delayed reopening the country’s popular 40% tax rebate for international film and TV productions until January 2025 as it strives to clear a funding backlog and receive a fresh budget.

The rebate has been closed for new applications since May 1. It was expected to formally reopen on October 1, administered by the newly-created Hellenic Film and Audiovisual Centre - Creative Greece (Hfac-Creative Greece).

However, Screen understands international film and TV productions hoping to shoot in Greece this year have been assured by Leonidas Christopoulos, CEO of Hfac-Creative Greece, they will be still able to access the rebate.

Dakota Johnson was feeling a little jittery while shooting “Loser Baby,” a short film that serves as her directorial debut and will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. But it wasn’t nerves that put her on edge.

Oscar-winner Chloé Zhao will next tackle an adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s bestselling novel “Hamnet” for Focus Features, and the project has a robust team in place. Oscar nominees Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal will star in the adaptation alongside Emily Watson and Joe Alwyn, while Steven Spielberg and Sam Mendes will produce alongside Liza Marshall and Pippa Harris.

The book is a fictional take on the grief over the death of William Shakespeare’s son Hamnet at the age of 11. Zhao co-wrote the screenplay with O’Farrell.

This marks Zhao’s next film after her one-two punch of 2020’s “Nomadland,” for which she won Best Picture and Best Director Oscars, and 2021’s Marvel movie “Eternals.”

Warner Bros has pushed up the release date of Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Frankenstein pic The Bride!, at the same time setting a date for its Untitled Conjuring Finale (fka Untitled Nl Horror Event).

The Bride! will open against Lionsgate’s Saw XI and the Uni kids’ title Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie, having been pushed up from October 3 to September 26, 2025, while the final of four Conjuring films is currently the sole feature occupying September 5, 2025. Both titles will open in IMAX.

The first official trailer for Ridley Scott's long-awaited historical action epic Gladiator II has arrived online and it's every bit as epic as you'd expect as Paul Mescal (Normal People; Aftersun; The Lost Daughter) squares off against 3x Primetime Emmy-nominee Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian; Game of Thrones; Narcos) and Academy Award-winner Denzel Washington (Training Day; Fences; Malcolm X).

As per the official synopsis, "Gladiator II continues the epic saga of power, intrigue, and vengeance set in Ancient Rome. In a new piece on the Spider-Man: Far From Home and Roadhouse star, THR reports that Jake Gyllenhaal has joined the cast of The Bride!, but don't reveal any details on his character.

Gyllenhaal (Maggie) recently took to Instagram to share the first ever production stills from the film, giving us a glimpse of Christian Bale as Frankenstein's Monster, and Jessie Buckley as the misunderstood creature's titular Bride.

Studio Galazio and filmmaker Christopher André Marks (“King Otto”) have announced the launch of a new production banner focused on bringing internationally minded stories with Greek themes to global audiences.

The label’s first film will be an “Ocean’s Eleven”-style heist comedy set in Greece, with two-time NBA Mvp Giannis Antetokounmpo on board to produce his first scripted feature film. Plot details and international cast are being kept under wraps, but production is slated to begin this year.

The untitled film will be written and directed by Marks alongside a team of veteran international producers including Shani Hinton (“The Stones and Brian Jones”), Raphaël Benoliel (“Emily in Paris”), Adam B. Stern (“Blue Jasmine”) and Erika Aronson (“Blue Jasmine”).

Galazio’s initial slate also includes a prestige limited drama series and an untitled biopic on an influential Greek figure, all currently in development with high-profile talent attached.

But, the stars of the hit romantic miniseries, Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones, are reuniting for a good cause.

Mescal and Edgar-Jones are raffling off tickets to a special marathon screening of “Normal People” on the big screen. The two of them will attend the event, taking place June 16 at a Central London cinema, as well as director Lenny Abrahamson, producer Ed Guiney and other “friends from the show.”

The Shanghai International Film Festival has unveiled a selection that is weighted heavily to world premieres and Chinese, local titles.

That gives the festival showcase screenings for the newest works by established Chinese directors Gu Changwei, Wei Shujun and Guan Hu (“Old Fish”).

Guan was rewarded in Cannes only last week for his Un Certain Regard-winning picture “Black Dog,” but will unveil his next effort “The Hedgehog in Shanghai’s main competition.

All but two of the 14 competition section films are world premiere screenings – only “Un Homme en Fuite” recently released in France, and “Le Seconda Vita,” recently released in Italy are international premieres – and all 11 films selected in the Asian New Talent Competition are debut screenings.

Olivia Colman and John Lithgow head the cast of “Jimpa,” a multi-generational family tale involving a nonbinary teenager and her mother who take a trip to see their gay grandfather. The Australia- and Europe-set film is directed by Sophie Hyde, whose most recent film was the breakout “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande.”

The film is now in its third week of production in Amsterdam and will later shoot in Adelaide, Australia and Helsinki, Finland.

Rights to the film are being handled by Protagonist Pictures in much of the world and by CAA Media Finance in North America, with sales kicking off at the Cannes Market next week. The film has already locked in Cineart as distributor in the Benelux region and Kismet and The Unquiet Collective for Australia and New Zealand.

As the film’s description goes, “Three Hares” weaves an enchanting creation myth and the mystical origin story of the ancient three hares symbol into an environmental tale about three sisters, who must remind mankind to respect the earth in order to protect their future.

Maggie Gyllenhaal has shared a first look at Christian Bale and Jessie Buckley in The Bride.

On Thursday morning, the director uploaded images from a camera test on Instagram, featuring Bale’s latest onscreen transformation into Frankenstein, along with his paramour, the eponymous bride (Buckley). The photos were taken by film photographer Niko Tavernise.

Bale’s version of the monster features a scarred face, sutures on his forehead and a stitched-up chest adorned with a tattoo that reads “Hope.” Meanwhile, Buckley appears in a bleached-blond, finger-waved hairstyle, with ink splatter covering her cheek.

In The Bride, Gyllenhaal puts a fresh spin on Mary Shelley’s story, setting it in 1930s Chicago. According to its logline, a lonesome Frankenstein enlists the help of Dr. Euphronios to create a companion for himself. They revive a murdered woman, creating the titular bride.

The movie is being produced by Emma Tillinger Koskoff, Gyllenhaal, Talia Kleinhendler (The Lost Daughter), and Osnat Handelsman-Keren (The Lost Daughter). EPs are Courtney Kivowitz (The Lost Daughter) and Carla Raij.

The pic will mark Gyllenhaal’s second directorial effort following The Lost Daughter, her screen adaptation of Elena Ferrante’s novel of the same name, starring Olivia Colman, Dakota Johnson, and Jessie Buckley. The film was nominated for three Oscars: Best Actress (Colman), Best Supporting Actress (Buckley), and Best Adapted Screenplay (Gyllenhaal).

The Bride is currently slated for release in IMAX on October 3, 2025. The pic is just the first Frankenstein adaptation audiences can expect on the big screen soon. Fifth Season has promoted Christopher Slager to head of film as it expands in-house production and development and announced that Alexis Garcia is leaving to set up his own venture with backing from the company.

Slager, who has been at Fifth Season for some time, previously served as a partner and SVP of film finance and sales at Endeavor Content, and before that worked at WME.

Prior to that he was at Focus Features. Credits include The Florida Project, Mudbound, The Banker, The Peanut Butter Falcon, Pig, and the Book Club franchise.

Christopher Slager has been promoted to head film operations at Fifth Season, with longtime features head Alexis Garcia exiting the company to launch a yet-to-be revealed venture.

Garcia, whose new outfit is receiving backing from Fifth Season, will remain with the company as a consultant through the transition.

According to Wednesday’s announcement from Fifth Season co-CEOs Graham Taylor and Chris Rice, Slager will focus on in-house production and development. The company’s recent film credits include 80 for Brady, the Apple Sundance acquisition Flora and Son and Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Lost Daughter.

“Christopher is one of the most dynamic and entrepreneurial executives working today,” said Taylor and Rice. “We believe there is a huge opportunity ahead in the film space, and we are committed to expanding our focus on in-house production and development under his leadership.”

In 2017, “Kong: Skull Island” opened with $61 million, leading into 2019’s “Godzilla: King of the Monsters,” which opened with considerably less, $47.8 million, and only made $383 million worldwide.

Olivia Colman got candid about the gender pay disparity in Hollywood during a recent appearance on CNN’s “The Amanpour Hour.”
