Governments and agencies across Asia are taking steps to expand and extend the cross-border film coproduction movement.
A seminar called ‘From Eurasia to Global Collaboration’ on Thursday, the third day of the Taiwan Creative Content Fest, represented a handy recap of funding and structural developments from four countries: The Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia and Turkey.
Alex Sihar, from Indonesia’s directorate of culture, part of the ministry of education, described an ongoing process intended to put the industry on a more professional footing.
“While we have a long history of filmmaking and a very diverse culture, our films until recently have had very little international exposure, there has been little knowledge transfer and no incentives for location shooting or co-production.”
Film policy was previously stretched across multiple ministries, but is now to be overseen by a film department under the education ministry, which is newly separated from educational matters.

Casper the Friendly Ghost is coming back to television in a brand new incarnation reminiscent of Riverdale‘s darker interpretation of the Archie comics. Peacock is developing Casper, a live-action, horror/adventure series, which reimagines the origin of Casper in a coming-of-age story that explores what it means to be alive.
Set in high school, Casper is written/executive produced by The Ghost Bride head writer Kai Yu Wu. In it, when a new family arrives in the small town of Eternal Falls, Casper finds himself entangled in a mystery uncovering dark secrets that have been buried for over 100 years.
Casper is produced by UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group, and DreamWorks Animation.
Casper originated as an affable translucent ghost featured in a slew of animated movies by Famous Studios released between 1945 and 1959. That’s when the character was acquired by Harvey Comics, which had published Casper comics since 1952. Since then,...

Amazon has picked up a very different kind of young adult series that immerses you in a Ya novel — literally. The new comedy series titled Nancy Wu Done It comes from writers and executive producers Kai Yu Wu (co-executive producer of Amazon’s Paper Girls and Carnival Row) and Jessica Henwick (Iron Fist and Game of Thrones actress) and is described as a mashup of Pleasantville and Nancy Drew.
The story follows a frustrated Asian American female Ya author who suddenly finds herself transported into one of her own books. As a result, she must work with the titular character she created — who she now hates — to solve an unfinished mystery.
Nancy Wu Done It comes from Amazon Studios in association with Vertigo Entertainment. Roy Lee and Miri Yoon from Vertigo will serve as executive producers.

An influx of global and regional streamers looking to create content for Chinese-language audiences at a lower price point, and without the creative restrictions at play in censorious China, have led to a sort of renaissance for production in Taiwan.
The appetite of platforms, such as Netflix, HBO and Disney-Fox, for local content to attract local users has thrown a lifeline to the creative industries in the self-
governed island, whose content has faced increasing difficulties getting into China — the biggest, most obvious market for Mandarin-language productions — at a time when cross-strait ties are at a nadir.
“Right now, China is comparatively not free and difficult to enter — that’s Taiwan’s opportunity,” says Homme Tsai, chairman of Taiwan’s New Media Entertainment Assn. “The whole world struggles to get into China, but there are still millions of overseas Chinese in North America, Southeast Asia and elsewhere that still need Chinese-language content.

Netflix has set a release date for I Am Not Okay With This, a well-pedigreed supernatural/coming-of-age drama from, fittingly, two Stranger Things executive producers and The End of the F***ing World Ep/director Jonathan Entwistle.
Based on the Charles Forsman graphic novel and co-created for TV by Entwistle and Christy Hall, I Am Not Okay With This is described as an irreverent origin story that follows a teenage girl (played by Sophia Lillis of Sharp Objects and the It film franchise) who is navigating the trials and tribulations of high school, all while dealing with the complexities of her family,...
