Night Sky (2022)
I cannot believe they cancelled this series!
I cannot believe they cancelled this series after just one season. The concept is really unique. The cinematography is beautiful. The acting is great. I just thought the concept was so promising. I couldn't wait for things to unfold. Truly interesting sci-fi.
I just can't understand why Amazon keeps cancelling amazing (and popular) TV shows. The worst part is; it finishes on a cliffhanger. Where is the artistic integrity?? If a popular show ended on a cliffhanger and you decide to cancel it after producing and releasing it, for goodness sake make another series!... even if it only has a couple of episodes.
Anyways, awesome show but don't watch it if you don't like to be left hanging.
Portrait Artist of the Year (2013)
Painfully predictable judges. Give us something new for once!
I love the concept of this TV show. If I only had to rate the concept I would easily rate it a 9/10.
I really enjoyed the first 3 seasons but by the fourth season it had become painfully predictable. I can always guess which portrait the judges are going to choose to send to the semi final. There's not much variety of art that gets sent to the semifinals and what's worse is that the judges think they're being really modern and unique with their choice of works. I understand that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I really do like the type of style that the judges keep choosing but it's not the ONLY style I like.
This show desperately needs to switch things up with the judges. The show would instantly become more interesting if every 1-2 seasons we would see different judges and if all the judges were actual artists as opposed to curators and historians. I still cannot believe who they chose as the winner in 2020. It's something that every graphic designer out there has been doing for a good while now, it's something I've seen a thousand times, and doesn't show the level of skill that most of the other artists who competed showed.
The hosts are alright but I felt that Stephen Mangan is far more entertaining and better cast here than Joan Bakewell and Frank Skinner. But I don't really care that much about who is hosting as long as I'd get to see some variety for once!
Missions (2017)
Cool story but some lousy acting
I binge watched this show (but then again, I binge watch most shows I watch...) so I think the story was quite good and original, or at least the main theme of the show. I would give this show somewhere between 5-8 stars.
The downfall is that too many actors are not very good, especially those who play the roles of Gemma Williams, Alice Meyer, and the female American Agent with the thick glasses. There were times where I felt like not watching anymore because of how cringe-worthy their acting was. But the story was intriguing so I kept on watching.
In the first season, 1-3 members of the crew were very irrational. I find it hard to believe that such childish and cowardly individuals would've ever been chosen to be on the first mission to Mars. Anyhow, I enjoyed the show for the most part and thought it was original and filmed nicely. It would be good to know if they're going to make a 4th season or not.
The Expanse (2015)
Great story with some amazing acting and some lousy acting.
First of all, watch a couple of episodes before deciding that you hate it. It does have a bit of a slow start but it really takes off towards the second half of the first season.
Overall, the show is pretty good. I was between giving it a 6 and a 9. The story is great, the visuals, the costumes, pretty much everything, except a lot of the actors. There's quite a lot of really bad acting by some of the main cast. Out of the whole main cast, or regularly occurring characters, about half are amazing, convincing in their roles and have great chemistry between each other, and the other half are so bad. It's a shame because the show has managed to draw me into this incredible universe but I'm regularly snapped out of it by the lousy acting of some. I would recommend watching the show though. I just wouldn't watch it twice.
Morfiy (2008)
Hauntingly beautiful!
I rarely watch the same film twice but I watched this film twice within the same week and I feel I could watch it a hundred times. It left me thinking about it for days.
It's a very symbolic film, somewhat humorous (after all, Bulgakov was great at satire) but tragic, as were those times. It's bizarre, alluring, and quite dark.
The film was so beautifully directed by Aleksey Balabanov, and Leonid Bichevin did a stunning job in the title role!
(Some people might find some of the surgical scenes disturbing. Personally, I didn't mind as I've always been fascinated by such things.)
