AVA: A Twist in the Road (2021)
A brave, touching film.
"Ava- A Twist In The Road" is a brave, touching indie film about loss, survival, and rebirth that explores issues that big budget, mainstream films are reluctant to explore. It tells the story of a mature, late middle aged woman named Ava who has it all - an affluent lifestyle,a beautiful home, and a devoted lover soulmate named Ben who provides all the aforementioned luxuries. But then Bob dies, and Ava loses not only her soulmate but his income. When Bob's hateful son contests his will, Ava is left penniless has no choice but to look for work. Writer, director, editor, and star does an excellent job of telling Ava's story. I say her film is brave because not many filmmakers, even indie ones, are willing to make a film about an older protagonist. A memorable film.
Mr. Anderson's Possessed Car (2023)
A clever horror comedy film.
"Mr. Anderson's Possessed Car" is a clever horror comedy film that stands out from the rest. The story of a devout Christian man who buys a car possessed by the ghost of it's previous owner - a druggie who blows his brains out with a gun rather than be arrested for drug possession - it effectively uses horror tropes and social stereotypes ( donut loving cops, horny housewives ) to poke fun at modern life. The over the top acting, especially by lead actor Stephen Thomas, suits the movie perfectly. Writer director Maria Galindo does great job of not only telling the story, but of keeping the it moving along in the right horror/comedy tone throughout. The cinematography, art direction, and sound were all exceptional. All in all, a possessed car movie that ranks up there with "Christine" and "The Car."
Toxic Impulses (2022)
A superior Neo noir thriller!
Toxic Impulses is a superior neo noir thriller. Top notch writing and direction by Kyle Schadtkeep the viewer captivated from beginning to end. The screenplay was very effective in evoking the frightening family dynamic that exists when one member has gone off the rails and into the world of crime and deception due to drug addiction. The acting is excellent - especially the performance of the lead actress. So are the cinematography, art direction, and musical score. And the graphics accompanying the opening credit sequence were very original - something you don't see often these days. An all around impressive, memorable job.
Italian for Travelers (2021)
A powerful, great thriller!
Italian For Travelers is a powerful, truly great thriller that kept me guessing from the beginning to the end. There are very few thriller films where you can't see what's coming at the end, and this is one of them. The film is expertly paced, building from a quiet, low key beginning to a sense of foreboding that leads to a devastating conclusion. Writer and director Von Kochar is great talent. The actors were all top notch too, especially Hannah Elder in the lead role. Cinematography, set design, art direction were all on target. And the clever use of Italian language translations interspersed throughout the film added to the tension. An impressive job all around.
Solid Rock Trust (2022)
A great new heist film
Solid Rock Trust is an entertaining, innovative heist movie- all the more impressive because it takes place almost entirely in a single location. A young woman named Madeleine, the "brain " of the heist, talks to and coordinates her accomplices by phone and computer from a warehouse loft far from the actual crime scene. In the hands of a lesser screenwriter and director the film would be claustrophobic and annoying, but Rick Ives holds the viewer's interest from start to finish with great dialogue and great character development. Koko Marshall as Madeline gives a fantastic performance, and so do her unseen costars in their voiceover roles. The musical score was perfect for a heist film, the cinematography flawless. A great job all around, and a great debut for Rick Ives.
